1 EASTERN NARRATOR Volume 6 Issue 1 October 2017 Introducing the New ERD Soror Shirley Dean-Johnson was born, raised and worked on a farm in Nashville, North Carolina. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland during her high school years. She has a B.S. degree from Morgan State University. She was employed for eight (8) years as a Claims Examiner with Aetna Insurance Company in Washington, D.C. and has been employed for over 25 years as a Case Manager with Baltimore City Department of Social Services, processing maltreatment referrals of abuse, neglect and mental injury on behalf of children and adult survivors. She also testifies in court. Business and Professional Women: Furthering The Dream of Economic Independence - Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., National Theme Since being inducted into the Kappa Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority in 1997, Soror Dean-Johnson has served on the local level as Chapter President, 1st Vice President, Financial Secretary and Treasurer. On the Region level she held the offices of Financial Secretary and Assistant Eastern Regional Director. She has also chaired and worked on various committees on the National level. Soror Dean-Johnson is married to Longworth Johnson and they have a son and daughter. Soror Dean-Johnson is a member of New Fellowship Christian Community Church, the co-caregiver for her mother, and she is a strong believer that there is ALWAYS room for improvement. 5 GAMMA Chapter Washington, DC GAMMA Chapter Empowers through Education, Business and Leadership. G.O.L.D.E.N. Guiding our Labor of Love to Deliver Essential Educational Needs Chapter Retreat In the spirit of Friendship & Love, Gamma Sorors kicked off SY17-18 with a retreat focused on Sisterhood, Trust & Communication. Sorors began the day with a yoga session led by Soror Taft, who is an advanced certified yoga instructor. After settling our minds and setting the tone for the day, Sorors moved into workshops focused on Communication and Trust. Sorors enjoyed a sisterhood luncheon and ended the day with a few rounds of Dance Taboo. It was a great experience and got Sorors fired up for the year ER Leadership Conference Gamma represented well at the Eastern Region Fall Leadership Seminar hosted in Baltimore, MD. Two Gamma Sorors (J. Porter, N. Ford) represented Gamma as officers on the ER Executive committee serving this year as Recording Secretary and Treasurer respectively. The committee hosted an efficient and informative Leadership Seminar! Soror Erica Belton coordinated a special presentation and a procession of Chapter presidents to the Region! Presidents were introduced in high fashion and their professional biographies were read. Chapter s cheered along as we celebrated the chapter leaders of the Region. Nine Gamma Sorors were in attendance to learn and plan another excited year for the Eastern Region. Black Women s Agenda Gamma chapter was excited to attend the 40th annual Black Women's Agenda Symposium and Luncheon 5 Gamma Sorors (T. Sanders, J. Porter, A. Kitchen, K. Arey and M. Resil) attended in green and white fashion to greet and welcome Sorors from across Iota land to the nation s capital and join sister organizations to honor notable black women who have made amazing contributions to our communities. 5
6 EASTERN NARRATOR Volume 6 Issue 1 October 2017 KAPPA Chapter Baltimore, MD School Supply Giveaway Event The 2017 Iota for Education Day event, an outreach community activity, sponsored by Kappa Chapter (Baltimore, MD), was held on Saturday, August 12 and 19, 2017, at Greater Macedonia Church of God In Christ in Baltimore, Maryland. Sixty-four (64) students from five (5) school levels (kindergarten, elementary, middle/high school, and college 31 schools in total), were given an assortment of supplies for their back-to-school needs - from pencils to book bags. This event was the culmination of Kappa s school supply/fundraising event efforts throughout the past sorority year. Kappa Sorors and MOI participated in this school enrichment event as contributors, on-site participants serving as: registrants, organizers of supplies, bag stuffers and/or distributors. Kappa was proud to partner with Greater Macedonia C.O.G.I.C. as the chapter continues their work within the Baltimore community. Special thanks to White Rose Queen Doris Browning Austin and Soror Kay Biles for leading the charge with this program. 6
7 OMICRON Chapter New York, NY EASTERN REGION LEADERSHIP SEMINAR Omicron Chapter President Soror Monifa Morgan attended the 2017 Leadership Seminar of the EFFICIENT Eastern Region. The meeting was presided by newly elected Eastern Region Director Soror Shirley Dean-Johnson at the beautiful Holiday Inn, Inner Harbor. Soror Dean's theme for the Sorority year is Cultural Transformation through Leadership, Engagement, Accountability, and Professionalism. Omicron would like to thank Kappa Chapter for being our gracious hosts. Chapter Spa Retreat The Sorors of Omicron Chapter spent the day revitalizing their Minds, Bodies and Souls at the Island Spa and Sauna in Edison, NJ. The Sorors enjoyed saunas, scrubs, and facials as well as traditional Korean cuisine, fresh juices, and smoothies. It was an exhilarating way to kick off the new Sorority Year and catch up with each other. #30DAYSOFTEAL Soror Lisa Hinton went to Social Media this September to raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer. Using the hash tag #30DaysofTeal, Lisa posted Ovarian Cancer facts throughout the month. Ovarian cancer has taken the lives of several Omicron Chapter family members and friends and is known as the Silent Killer. 7

The theme was Stop the Silence. The purpose was to The Eastern Regional Leadership Summit was attended by five Sorors from Alpha Chi Chapter. 9 GAMMA DELTA Chapter Richmond, VA Founder s Day Gamma Delta Chapter celebrated Founder s Day on June 1, 2017, 6:00pm, at the Libbie Mill Library in Richmond, Virginia. There were 16 Sorors in attendance. The 2017/2018 Officers were installed following the Founder s Day activities. Refreshments were served at the close of the session. Eastern Region Leadership Conference The Eastern Region Leadership Seminar was held in Baltimore, Maryland, August 25-26, Eastern Director Shirley Dean-Johnson and Kappa Chapter were the Co-hosts. The 2017/2018 theme was introduced as Cultural Transformation through Leadership, Engagement, Accountability, and Professionalism. A large amount of information was introduced and reviewed for use in the new sorority year. Gamma Delta Chapter had 2 Sorors in attendance; Soror Jean T. Pittman (President) and Soror Gail E. Davis, (ER Journalist). National Convention The 88th National Convention was held July 18-23, 2017, in Long Beach, California. National President Stephanie Dilworth introduced the theme as Developing Leaders through Sisterhood. Gamma Delta Chapter was honored with the Chapter Growth Award. Gamma Delta Chapter had its 2 newest transfer Sorors attend as voting Delegates, Khalilah Shabazz and Desiree Nelson. Fall Rush Gamma Delta Chapter held its Fall Rush August 12, 2017 at the Varina Library in Varina, Virginia. We had 3 prospective guests in attendance. An Interest Session was held on August 23, 2017, at Antonio s Italian Restaurant in Chester, Virginia, at which 3 additional guests attended. Future Iota Leaders Skate Party Gamma Delta Chapter s FIL group held an End of School Skate Party at Skate-a-Way, in Midlothian, Virginia. There were 4 FIL members in attendance. This was a great opportunity for the FIL members, parents, and Gamma Delta Sponsors to fellowship and close out the school year. The FIL, parents, and Sorors enjoyed this event. 9
10 EASTERN NARRATOR Volume 6 Issue 1 October 2017 GAMMA ZETA Chapter Hampton, VA Iota Phi Lambda National Convention Long Beach, CA Gamma Zeta went coast to coast this summer traveling to the 88 th Anniversary National convention held in Long Beach California. Gamma Zeta was proud to have the newly crowned Eastern Region Soror of the Year, President KaShauna G. Spratley, represent the Eastern Region at the National Soror Of the Year Banquet. A week of fun and sisterhood was had in sunny California. Leadership Seminar Gamma Zeta Chapter joined with Eastern Region Sorors for the Leadership Seminar in Baltimore Maryland, September 18, Gamma Zeta was proud to serve the Eastern Region in two leadership roles, Financial Secretary and Soror Catherine C. Winston as this year s Eastern Region Parliamentarian. Over 40 Sorors joined in sisterly friendship and love to plan the upcoming programing for the Eastern Region s Sorority Year. A surprise baby shower was held at the meeting for President Spratley and her future FIL. Gamma Zeta Chapter Retreat On September 10 th Gamma Zeta Chapter President hosted chapter Sorors at our annual Chapter Retreat. Gamma Zeta Sorors Dressed in Iota colors, gathered for a day of fun activities, sisterly bonding and program planning for the exciting upcoming sorority year. The retreat was held at the community center and featured a delicious prepared working lunch and informative workshops prepared by Sorors. Gamma Zeta looks forward to a productive and efficient sorority year. Sorors celebrated the coming of President Spratley s coming boy joy, and the excitement that the upcoming sorority year holds! Black Women s Agenda On September 22 Gamma Zeta Sorors traveled to Washington, DC to attend the 40 th annual Black Women s Agenda. Sorors joined Stephanie Dilworth, 44 th National President, and other Sorors from across Iota Land. Black women of BWA sister organizations joined in lifting up and empowering the agenda of furthering growth and development for Black women. Dressed in Iota green and white, Sorors enjoyed a beautiful lunch, honored distinguished female leaders and networked with members from women s auxiliary and leadership organizations from across the country. 10
