1 Newsletter Helping Hands Field Trip Linda s Filber Orchard Rhoten for making this opportunity possible and working with us side by side demonstrating how to find the filberts. By Christine Bartell On Wednesday, November 6, OSD Helping Hands drove out to Linda s Filbert Orchard in Aumsville. Linda invited Helping Hands to glean the filbert nuts that had been left behind after 2 harvests. Donning rain jackets and boots, we braved the steady rain and mud to gather several buckets of filberts. Upon returning to OSD wet and covered in mud, we spread out the nuts on screen racks in the greenhouse. Here they will be cleaned and dried. Helping Hands Crew with Linda Rhoten. Helping Hands will be packaging our filberts in festive holiday bags and selling them for the holidays. Nancy Rourke s Presentation and Display of De VIA By Zachary Wertz On November 14th, the ATP and three High School students went to Nancy Rourke's presentation and display of De VIA (Deaf Visual Image Art) at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Rourke is an internationally known Deaf artist based in Colorado. Nuts on screen racks to be cleaned and dried. Despite the uncooperative weather, we all had a fun and productive time. Thank you to Linda She was very detailed in her hour-long speech. She explained a lot about each painting and it was a stellar experience for the kids. Her focus is on Audism and Deafhood, which is discovering your identity as a deaf person. Her art encompasses issues like Cochlear Implants, Alexander Graham Bell and the oralist method Page 1

2 of education. She explained about educating a deaf child from newborn to adult. She has strong opinionated views and visually expresses these in her multi-layer paintings. She explained her start as an artist as a three year plan. Each year she had a specific focus and the work is so powerful. People ask her to explain what each piece of work represents. She explained what each color represents in her work, who is her mentor, who are fellow deaf artists and their styles. Afterward there was a Q&A session and the High School students asked intelligent questions and related to the speaker. For further curiosity, Nancy Rourke now Tweets and Facebooks her daily paintings online. Her Facebook page is Nancy Rourke - Expressionist Painting. PBIS Orientation Planning in Work November 6th, new students to the high school enjoy a pizza lunch and orientation to OSD s Positive Behavioral Instructional Support (PBIS) program at OSD. They reviewed expectations for positive behavior, as well as, discussed the PAH incentive program and discipline referrals. Students and a staff poses next to Nancy Rourke s Painting PBIS Orientation By Donna Schuyler Hunter Morelli and Jazmine Smith, two Student Body Government officers, are planning the PBIS orientation for the new high school students at OSD.
