2 November is Alzheimer s Awareness Month situations for the diagnosed. The impact does not end at those who have been diagnosed however, but includes family and loved ones who often take over as caregiver. Over the past year the Alzheimer s Association estimates that nearly 17.9 billion hours of unpaid care were provided by friends and family of people with Alzheimer s and other dementias. Fall Festivities - Pumpkin Patch! Farmington Square residents from all three buildings have been enjoying all of the fun festivities that fall has to offer. One of our most popular van trips of the year is the annual trip to the pumpkin patch. This year our residents got to go to Plumper s Pumpkin Patch. Everyone got to enjoy the farm tour which included seeing animals such as pigs, sheep, ponies, chickens, bunny rabbits, and baby chicks. Another Delightful attraction at Plumper s was the pumpkin, corn, and apple cannons. We all watched excitedly as pumpkins and other fun harvest comestibles were launched from a cannon across a field at targets and even old vans and tractors. What fun and excitement! 2 Other fun people watching opportunities came along as we saw children trying their hands at pumpkin bowling and enjoying pony rides. Residents got to try out some fun photo props for pictures and look at all of the neat and unique looking types of pumpkin squash and gourds they are growing on the farm. Our favorites were the warty pumpkins. A live bluegrass band played some fantastic music from the porch of an old farm house on the property and we enjoyed the background noise, while a few people chose to go watch the band play and try out a little dancing. All in all everyone had a fun day, and enjoyed our time on the farm. We are already looking forward to going back next year! BUILDING AWARENESS FOR ALZHEIMER S AND RECOGNIZING FAMILY CAREGIVERS THIS NOVEMBER A growing epidemic in the United States and the world, Alzheimer s disease affects one in three seniors over the age of 65. In 1983 Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer s Disease Awareness Month. In the past 32 years the numbers of those diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease has increased by over three million Americans. The drive to increase awareness includes work to help fund research into the disease, possible treatments, and care. Alzheimer s disease was discovered in 1906 after Dr. Alois Alzheimer noticed changes in brain tissue of a woman who had died of what was then diagnosed as an unusual mental illness. Here we are nearly 110 years later and Alzheimer s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and still does not have a cure. Though a larger problem than ever before, we do know a lot more about Alzheimer s than we did one hundred years ago, partially due to the increased of awareness of the disease. The impact on those who experience the symptoms of memory loss and Alzheimer s disease is great and includes frustrating Rightfully so, National Alzheimer s Disease Awareness Month coincides with National Family Caregiver s Month which is a time to recognize the role of family members and loved ones who take on the responsibilities of caregiver. At Farmington Square, we work hard throughout the year to support the drive of awareness and fundraising to help those in our lives affected by Alzheimer s disease. We are proud to say that as a community we ve participated in the Portland, Or. Walk To End Alzheimer s, and we have raised over $1,000 throughout the year to be donated to the Alzheimer s Association. A great thank you is owed to all our community members who have attended our events and participated or donated towards the cause. Together we are fighting for our loved ones memories. We also recognize our family caregivers by providing a monthly Alzheimer s caregivers support group on the third Thursday of every month from 6-8pm. Our next meeting will be Thursday Nov 19 Starting at 6pm. Throughout the month we ll be sharing opportunities to learn more about Alzheimer s disease, dementia and caregiving with community events, on our community Facebook page, and the Radiant Senior Living blog.
