2 Hair & Nail Salon Information The most fun workout class you ve ever done! Come join the fastest growing class we have at Live Oak. Fun Fit 11:30 Mon-Fri. The class is designed to help with balance, strength and flexibility. The 30 minute class is held right before lunch which also helps or body with digestion. It is a go at your pace class. Also, earn BINGO Cash! Stylist Kathleen will be available for manicures. By appointment only, she will give basic hand manicure clip, file, and polish. Schedule for manicures will be the second full week of each month on Tuesday at 1:00 pm & Thursday at 1:30 pm in the salon. 3 To Your Health By Dr. Daniel Scarbrough This month let s discuss one of the most common ailments which affects almost all of us as we age hearing loss. After age 50 we all have an increased risk of developing hearing loss. Today 28 million Americans have a treatable hearing loss. Some of the early signs of hearing loss which often occur slowly and painlessly are a perception that people are mumbling to you and words are beginning to sound alike. Ringing sounds in your ear are another common early sign of hearing reduction. A history of exposure to high noise levels (shooting guns, loud bands) or any type of acoustic trauma may cause hearing loss. Hearing loss can be inherited. Early detection of hearing loss and early initial treatment often greatly increase the chance of preventing or reducing hearing loss. Reduced hearing can cause many adverse effects such as impaired mental function, depression, a feeling of isolation, and chemical dependence. Unfortunately, many people are unaware that hearing loss can often be treated. It is important to have ongoing hearing screening tests starting at the age of 50 and continuing after age 55 every 2-3 years. These screening tests should include word recognition tests along with tone screening tests. This screening process takes only minutes and the results should be available immediately. You will thus know if more comprehensive evaluation by an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist is needed. A word of caution; people selling or dispensing hearing aids are primarily interested in selling their products. Only with a through hearing and specialist evaluation can you be sure that a hearing aid is appropriate and will be effective in helping to restore your hearing loss. The ladies at Pearl s nails are very accommodating to our needs and make this outing a fun one. Manicures are $14 and Pedicures are $25. Thursday 7th 2:15 Hearing Aid Cleaning & service (FREE) Ascent Audiology will be here to answer any question about hearing aids and make any repairs necessary. Please sign up or stop by the activity room on the 7th. Happy Hour Every Thursday at 4:00 in Cafe Join your neighbors for this fun social hour before dinner. We offer wine, beer, non-alcoholic drinks and light snacks. Monday 25th 10:30 Men s bus outing Calling all of our men! We are having a men s only outing to the Gulf State Pier. We will also have lunch while we are out. Please be sure to sign up at the activity corner. Coffee & Current Events 10am in cafe Join us every weekday in the café for coffee, donuts and conversation about daily news and events. Jessica will be joining with her computer to share daily subjects. Coloring Club 10:30 on Fridays Join other coloring enthusiasts as we gather in the activity room to color, converse and even swap books. After dinner movies in theater 6:15pm Resident Kay Hicks has volunteered to be the projectionist for the movies after dinner. If you have a movie you would like to watch please let Jessica or Megan know. We have a large variety of movies/shows and Netflix. Page 3

5 A Message from the Clubhouse Director As a renter in the ILF apartments, you actually have the best of LOV life. You not only get to participate in the activities at the assisted living, you also have use of the facilities at the Clubhouse! If you d like to reserve a room to play cards or games or even have a pot luck, just give me a call to see what we can do. Betty and Rose (and one more will be joining them when we transition to the outside pool when the water warms) participate in the 8:45 morning ladies water aerobics class held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. They are enjoying meeting new people while getting fit. Bob comes to work out in the fitness room and so does Rose. I ll be glad to show you what I know in operating the fitness equipment don t be shy, give it a try any time between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. *The blueprints to the new apartments are hung in the Garden lobby. They are still on schedule to be complete by October. *Friendly reminder to PLEASE pick up after your pets. *Working on future fun activities for ILF residents such as painting parties, live music, game groups, sponsored events and outings. In order to book these activities we must have more people attend them. Attendance has been very low recently and we are looking for ways to increase participation. There is a suggestion box in the garden lobby, please let us know what we can do to make your life here at Live Oak as fun as possible. Located at Hwy 59 in Robertsdale. Saturday 16th Elks Lodge Casino Trip to Hard Rock We will board the bus at Elks Lodge No 108 at 2671 Dauphin Island Parkway on 6/16/18 at 10:30 AM. The bus will leave at 11:00 AM and arrive at the Hard Rock at 12:00 Noon. We will board to return to the Lodge on 6/16/18 at 5:00 PM and arrive back in Mobile at 6:00 PM. Seats $25.00 each - with $15.00 Free Play There will be door prizes, a raffle, and a 50/50. Please come join us!
