3 COURSE OVERVIEW EDUCATIONAL NEED AND PROGRAM GOAL: A long term study ( ) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that the incidence of diabetes among adults in the United States has decreased each year since 2008, but the prevalence of diabetes continues to increase with 12.2 percent of the U.S. adult population having a diagnosis of diabetes in (CDC Diabetes Report Card 2017). According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, in 2014, the prevalence of adults with diabetes in Texas was 11 percent and in Public Health Region 11, which includes 19 counties in the southernmost region of Texas, the prevalence is significantly higher with a rate of 16.5 percent for adults with diabetes. Some of the possible reasons for the overall increases in prevalence may be due to people with diabetes living longer because of improvements and advances in technology, pharmaceutical agents and the increase in self-management practices. With more than 4,000 patient education and self-management programs available and new developments in diabetic resources, health care professionals are empowered to focus on risk factors, preventive care practices and improved outcomes for the patient with diabetes. This two-day conference features outstanding speakers and leading-edge topics that include a plant-based diet to reverse diabetes, the benefits of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and education intervention. Conference participants will learn about the new developments in the 2018 American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Medical Care and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist (AACE) Guidelines to treat type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Our distinguished faculty will also discuss metabolic syndrome, diabetic retinopathy, hypoglycemia, bariatric surgery, insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring. Also included are management and treatment options for testosterone deficiency and erectile dysfunction (ED), gastroparesis, depression, polypharmacy and foot ulcers. TARGET AUDIENCE: This activity is designed for family practice, primary care, internal medicine, and interested sub-specialty physicians, as well as pharmacists, physician assistants, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, dietitians and other interested health care professionals.
