The support, simple structure and variable resistance encourage core support and balance while building strength and flexibility. Learn Reformer protocols and progressions for working with clients with scoliosis, osteoporosis, disc injuries and spinal stenosis. Spinal anatomy and common pathologies will be reviewed and program principles for common conditions will be given to help you develop critical thinking skills for dealing with common client issues. Mat Challenge: Pilates + Props Add rings, rollers, bands and balls to your Mat work and create challenges, modifications, exciting sequences and new experiences for your classes, clients and for client home programs. Using the ThinkFit Programming system you will develop well balanced classes that take Pilates beyond the Mat to address functional exercises including standing work, upper body strength and balance and dynamic lower body exercises. In this short workshop, you will learn several sequences that flow smoothly from one move to the next to turn your Reformer workout into a dynamic, whole body dance. Learn the five principles of upper body training you can use in any training environment along with specific progressions on the Reformer. Appropriate for all instructors Instructor: Portia Page Class 4 Exploring the Spontaneous Activation of the Pelvic Floor, Abdominal Wall and Diaphragm This three-hour workshop will focus on recent case studies regarding intentional cueing of the pelvic floor, mechanical displacement with breath, and spontaneous organization through proper alignment. Participants will be involved in discussion of ways to better cue and facilitate spontaneous organization of the pelvis and trunk. Anderson will use RTUS (Real Time Ultrasound) with participants to demonstrate if you are like 45% of the Pilates teachers we ve studied who think they are lifting their pelvic floor, when in reality they are pushing it down. Be part of this exciting research and discover how good alignment and proper load can be the best cuing available for spontaneous organization of the lumbo-pelvic and trunk neuro-muscular-fascial systems (NMFS). Learn several sequences using different tools to challenge your more advanced clients, train athletes and add variety to your classes. Learn the do s and don ts of using unstable surfaces safely while adding creativity and fun to your Reformer workouts. Appropriate for Reformer Instructors. Instructor: Portia Page Class 2 Program Design and Problem Solving in the Pilates Studio The Pilates Studio contains many kinds of equipment, Reformers, Trapeze Tables, Chairs and Barrels each of which have unique properties. In this workshop we will explore the strengths of each piece of equipment and discuss strategies for designing successful, flowing programs in the Pilates studio for a variety of clients. Appropriate for reformer and apparatus instructors. Instructor: Nora St John Class 3 Scoliosis and Pilates While discovering the deformation of the spine in three dimensions; this workshop will work on understanding clients with scoliosis and establishing how to create a convenient Pilates workout repertoire for the benefit of the client. Most of the Pilates equipment will be used in this workshop (Reformer, Pilates Arc, Orbit, resistance bands) and Taha Erpulat will give valuable information and guidance in the use of these equipment as well. Class 4 Spinal Surgery Intervention Update This three-hour workshop will update participants on the latest surgical interventions focusing on minimally invasive and open surgical approaches, motion preservation techniques and hardware used to replace the lumbar and cervical discs. Anderson will discuss the latest research on motor control, pain modulation and pre and post-surgery exercise prescription. Participants will have the chance to participate in a hands-on lab designed to help Pilates teachers better understand spine biomechanics and how to restore healthy motion to individuals who have had surgery. Lastly, Anderson will conduct a lab using Polestar functional movement measures to help determine appropriate interventions. Instructor: Brent Anderson Class 5 Bodhi Ropes: Suspension Meets Pilates Bodhi Suspension System combines the stability and strength of suspension training with the refinement and precision of Pilates for an invigorating workout. Learn exercises for the upper body, lower body and core while experiencing the body s dynamic relationship to gravity. 8 Main Conference Courses SATURDAY AFTERNOON, MARCH 25, 2017 SATURDAY AFTERNOON WORKOUTS/DEMOS: 1:15 PM 2:15 PM SATURDAY AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS: 2:30 PM 5:30 PM Class 1 Reforming Flexibility Many clients miss potential flexibility benefits of Pilates by failing to adequately stabilize body segments or by allowing undesired compensations to occur when end ranges of motion are approached. This workshop will provide easy assessment tools, cues, and stretches on the Reformer that can be added to a movement session without breaking the flow. The focus will be on providing exercises for the spine, hip, and shoulder that incorporate static, PNF, dynamic, and functional approaches in a progressive manner. These exercise progressions will both improve flexibility and help prepare clients for classical repertoire that demands large ranges of motion. Appropriate for Reformer instructors. Instructor: Viktor Uygan Class 2 Three Dimensional Core in the Pilates Studio Training the core in three dimensions or all three planes is key to creating balance, efficiency and proper load transfer through the body. Using the Pilates studio environment you will learn how to create true functional strength by performing exercises in the sagittal, frontal and horizontal plane. Pilates focuses primarily on the sagittal plane so we will explore the frontal and horizontal planes with lateral flexion and rotational moves to create balance and functional strength. This work is very useful for clients with poor posture as well as for athletes and clients who perform asymmetrical tasks in their daily or sports training. Instructor: Nora St. John Class 3 Rhythm Pilates: A Dance on the Mat Inspired by dance, Rhythm Pilates is a dynamic evolutionary approach to the Pilates method. Instructors: Lisa Hubbard Class 4 Problems of Alignment in Hips, Knees and Ankles In this workshop, you will find answers to many questions concerning the misalignment of the lower body. Some of those questions are: How does the misalignment of the ankle effect parts of the body other than the hips and the knees? Can wrong standing position lead to a herniated disc? What are the Pilates exercises that can be adapted to restore a better alignment? Instructor: Ayşe Erpulat Class 5 MOTR Core + Agility MOTR is the perfect tool for refining and balancing core work and for training strength, balance and agility in the lower body. Learn several sequences for developing speed, reactivity and balance in the legs culminating in working on the padded foot plate or Jump Board to truly lift the lower body away from the floor. This class focuses on Mat sequences to improve common postural and alignment issues such as kyphosis, rounded shoulders, forward head etc. The sequences can be added to a mat class or used as homework for motivated clients. Because of the flexibility of Pilates equipment and the emphasis on balance and core control, clients can retrain their nervous systems to overcome some of the stiffness, spasticity and balance challenges common with these conditions. Learn specific techniques and approaches in this workshop with Master instructor Brent Anderson. Instructor: Brent Anderson Class 2 The Pilates Method and Functional Strength Training on the Reformer and Tower Apparatus A whole body integrated program that highlights the traditional Pilates method and incorporates the benefits of functional strength training performance techniques. The program is designed to improve musculature, posture and increase flexibility and range of motion through a series of dynamic functional exercises. Class 3 EXO Chair Extravaganza Explore new moves on the Pilates EXO chair combining the Pilates Chair exercises with resistance bands to produce a workout that is fun while challenging the whole body. Instructor: Portia Page Class 4 Athletic Performance with the Reformer Tower The reformer tower will be used in this workshop in working on the improvement of clients who have a high level of athletic performance. Methods will be discussed on additions to the classical repertoire in this light. The participants will gain a new perspective with this new information on strength and balance training. 11 Presenters Nora St John, MS BALANCED BODY EDUCATION PROGRAM DIRECTOR Nora is a Pilates instructor, acupuncturist and massage therapist who has been teaching Pilates since 1989 and practicing Pilates since She began teaching at St. Francis Memorial Hospital where she studied the work with first generation teachers Eve Gentry, Romana Kryzanowska and Carola Trier and contemporary teachers Elizabeth Larkam, Alan Herdman and Jean Claude West. Working primarily with injured clients at the Dancemedicine division of the Center for Sport Medicine, she was constantly modifying and adjusting the traditional work to meet the needs of clients with limitations. After teaching for 17 years, owning Turning Point Studios in Walnut Creek, California and starting the Pilates continuing education conferences Body Mind Spirit and Pilates on Tour, Nora was hired as the Program Director for Balanced Body where she develops curriculum, writes manuals and teaches faculty for the Balanced Body Instructor Training Programs. Her passion is teaching new students and helping them to understand the universal movement principles that are the foundation of the Pilates method. Viktor Uygan BALANCED BODY MASTER INSTRUCTOR, KONNECT PILATES STUDIO Viktor is the Co-Owner of Konnect Pilates and the inventor of the Balanced Body Konnector. The Konnector is a singlerope pulley system with loops for all four limbs. The patented system enables independent, simultaneous movement of both arms and legs, and the user experiences constant proprioceptive feedback through the single rope. He is now traveling worldwide with Pilates on Tour and conferences training instructors the new and wide variety of exercises with The Konnector. He has been a Balanced Body Master Instructor for the past four years, teaching the entire Pilates comprehensive, Anatomy in 3D, BODHI, MOTR and CoreAlign. You can also see Mr. Uygan teaching and modeling in many Balanced Body DVD s and Podcasts. In 1992 Viktor started studying with the BodyCode System and Gyrotonics from Master Pino Carbone creator of the BodyCode System and owner of the first Gyrotonic center of Europe in Florence, Italy. He got introduced to Pilates after moving to the US in 1993 then studied for 6 years before he was certified in 1999 from DK Body Balancing through the University of Nevada accredited through the Nevada State board of Physical Therapy. Viktor grateful to have had the pleasure of learning from many great mentors in the industry during his last fifteen years of teaching. He is also certified with the Pilates for Golf certificate specializing in the training of golfers as well as the certification for resistance flexibility and strength training with the Meridian flexibility system. He is also a distributor for BodyCode products with his own company Body Mind E. Viktor has an extensive dance background, his studies began with Ankara Sate Company in Ankara, Turkey. He continued training at the Hamlyn School of Ballet in Florence, Italy under the direction of Franco DeVita and Raymond Lukens. He received elementary-advanced diplomas with honors in the Ceccetti technique. Viktor continued dancing and has 15 years of professional experience dancing with companies such as Ankara State and Hartford Ballet as well as guest performing in the United States and Europe. He has worked with such greats as David Allan, Kirk Peterson, Richard Glasstone, AnnMarie DeAngelo and Alla Osipenko along with many ballets by Balanchine, Tudor, Grahm, Choo San Goh and with Wayne Sleep for a tribute to Princess Diana. Viktor is certified with the American Ballet Theater national training curriculum for young dancers. He has been coaching dancers for technique, professional careers and national competitions winning numerous 1st places with his students nationally and internationally. His work has presented at Gala performances in Germany and New York and also won the YAGP Best Choreographer award for 2007 and Lisa Hubbard RHYTHM PILATES Lisa Hubbard is the Creator and Founder of Rhythm Pilates and is a Senior Faculty Member for world renowned BASI Pilates. She is an internationally recognized Pilates figure in the industry and has been featured in many award winning Pilates projects, including DVDs, textbooks and is a second-time cover girl for Pilates Style Magazine. She has dedicated over fifteen years to training in the method and has been teaching for over thirteen years. In addition to her dance background, she holds certifications in GYROTONIC, Yoga and owns a successful private Pilates studio in Southern California. Lisa is an inspiration to many movement practitioners whom have found her wealth of knowledge and creativity to only be surpassed by her fantastic energy. She is continuously recognized by her peers and by industry specialists as an outstanding representative of the Pilates method. Lisa has been featured presenter at the prestigious Asian Academy for Sports and Fitness Professionals in China and Hong Kong at the Asian Fitness Education Expo. Portia Page BALANCED BODY EDUCATION PROGRAM MANAGER Portia has been in the fitness industry for over 18 years as a teacher, competitor, program director, instructor trainer, international presenter and video co-star, fitness director and creator. She is a Gold Certified Pilates Teacher through Pilates Method Alliance, a Master Instructor of Balanced Body University and a Stott Pilates Certified Instructor. She holds current certifications with ACE, AFAA and PMA and has a BS in Cognitive Science from University of California at San Diego. Suzanne Scott SUZANNE SCOTT Suzanne Scott is involved in movement research, education and practice. She was appointed as Associate in Human Movement at the Vesalius Clinical Training Centre, University of Bristol, in 2013 and 11

12 is carrying out postgraduate research at the University of Exeter into exercise effects on bone. As a movement specialist she has acted as a consultant to teams in the English Premier League for the last 12 years. After studying dance and choreography at The Laban Centre, she trained in Pilates with Alan Herdman in London and Moira Stott in Toronto, and established an independent teacher training programme at The Scott Studio, Somerset, in An appreciation of how structure influences the expression of movement underlies Suzanne s teaching practice and informs her research focus. Brent Anderson POLESTAR PILATES Brent Anderson PhD, PT, OCS, President and CEO Brent received his degree in Physical Therapy at University of California, San Francisco in 1989 and his PhD in Physical Therapy at the University of Miami in His doctoral thesis explored the impact of Pilates rehabilitation on chronic low back pain using psycho-emotional wellness and quality of life measures. He is currently adjunct faculty at the University of Miami, Division of Physical Therapy. In addition, he owns and operates Polestar Physical Therapy and Pilates Center in Miami, FL, which serves as a model for the use of Pilates for rehabilitation. From his extensive background in rehabilitation and movement science, Brent has applied critical reasoning skills and supportive scientific research to Joseph Pilates revolutionary mind-body work. He also brings to the Polestar curriculum an investigation of the effects of psychology and energy systems on motor control and motor learning. Doğa Altıntaç, MSc BALANCED BODY MASTER INSTRUCTOR, BALANCED BODY BARRE TRAINER A well-respected leader in the healthcare industry, Angela Crowley has presented her work in the US, England, France, Italy, Brazil, and Australia. Her course, GYROTONIC for High Level Athletes was featured at the International Educational Conference at the Olympic Training Center in Rome. A recent presenter for the PMA, Angela was also honored as a Keynote speaker for the Complimentary Alternative Medical Conference at the convention center in Los Angeles and a primary presenter for Polestar Education International Conferences. A former gymnast and dancer Angela was seriously injured in a car accident that led to her understanding of the healing process. In his classes, he does not only instruct pilates exercises, but also provides both his students and the pilates trainers with the necessary information and understanding on rehabilitation of various spine and joint disorders, the pregnants and those who suffer osteoporosis.
