1 PANTHER PRESS ***If your student will be late or absent for any reason, please call the attendance line at: *** Creating a Giving Generation November Dates to Remember November 1-2 4th and 5th Grade B/D Track ACT Aspire Test November 8-15 StuCo Food Drive November 10 Veteran s Day Celebration B Track Report Cards Go Home November November 8-15, PRE StuCo is hosting a Holiday Food Drive to benefit Cherry Creek Families in need this season. Younger children may find the concept of charitable giving a little confusing, especially if the cause does not directly touch their own lives. They may not fully comprehend what it means to donate to the Red Cross to help victims of natural disasters, but may find it easier to understand giving a bag of food to someone in their own community. Our goal is for us all to focus on the good intentions of your children. Look for movement and growth toward greater empathy and highlight small acts of kindness they may demonstrate. Acknowledging even the smallest act of generosity will make it more likely that your child will become even more generous in the future. Deb Cohen, Certified Parenting Educator B/C Conferences Book Fair Items to Bring November NO SCHOOL THANKSGIVING BREAK November Little Mermaid Auditions Boxed mashed potatoes Canned or jarred gravy Canned green beans Yams/sweet potatoes Cream of mushroom soup Fried onions Boxed stuffing **Bonus items are: Peanut butter Canned Tuna Box of Granola Bars Canned Spaghetti O s/ravioli November 30 Holiday Shop Begins Cranberry sauce Chicken broth ***Winning grade level will receive a COOKIE PARTY!!! Items should be brought to your child s classroom and student council will pick them up from there. Thank you to all of our Pine Ridge families for always being so generous! 1

2 A letter from our P.E. Teacher What a wonderful state we live in! Colorado provides so many opportunities which promote a healthy lifestyle. My PE program is intentionally similar in that my emphasis is to help students understand the importance of fitness and nutrition and its benefit to their bodies. My focus is not only on sports and skills but on achieving a healthy lifestyle. Students begin to understand how nutrition, exercise, and fitness work together to provide that healthy lifestyle. Consistent exercise, and certain types of specific exercises, can both temporarily and permanently affect the way your brain is able to focus, its ability to deal with stress and anxiety, and its ability to learn... Exercise is like fertilizer for the brain... it s so good, it s like Miracle Gro. - Dr. John Ratey, Harvard Brain Researcher Research has shown that academic performance improves with increased physical activity and cardiovascular exercise. Students who are physically active tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance (memory) and classroom behaviors. Even just 20 minutes of walking can activate one s brain see insert. In short, exercise creates new brain cells and new learning enhances brain cells with more connections. Some of our most recent PE activities have been our traverse climbing wall and Railyard Fitness system. Our traverse wall offers opportunities for students to work on individual skills, as well as partner/team challenges. Benefits of the wall include increased concentration, balance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and communication. It has been fun to see how excited students are when they progress from just being able to climb up a panel to being able to traverse the whole length of the wall while maneuvering through obstacles. We have our own American Ninja Warriors at Pine Ridge, as students climb, crawl, hurdle, jump, and move through an obstacle course of rails and platforms at varying levels known as our Railyard Fitness system. There are very few restrictions during this active play which engages students in a unique exercise/fitness program. A recent buzz word in the fitness world is functional fitness which means that our exercises need to more supportive of the movements we do on a daily basis, those movements that replicate how the body moves while doing life activities; whether it is dancing, running, walking, shoveling, or cleaning the house. Again, students are improving their muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, balance, coordination and cardiovascular endurance, all while playing. A quality PE program can bring value to the learning process by enhancing students physically, emotionally, socially, and mentally. Come hang out with us in PE!! Mary Beth Billingsley 2
