I hope that your University of Dayton experience inside and outside of the classroom helps you grow into the person you want to be. There are many opportunities available to all students that aid in growth and development beyond the classroom. Join a student organization (like Commuters on Campus or one of the 270+ other groups!), participate in REAL Dayton, attend a Career Services event, organize an intramural team and play in an athletic event are all viable options. Attend the Fall Leadership Conference, play billiards in the Hangar, or watch a movie (for free) at 10 pm on a Saturday night. These programs can help you meet new people and consider new ideas. I hope that the information in this newsletter is helpful to PARKING you if SERVICES you have any ideas or suggestions for future newsletters, please don t hesitate to me at: alopezmatthews1@udayton.edu. Have a wonderful semester! Amy Lopez-Matthews Executive Director, Center for Student Involvement John F. Kennedy Memorial Union Commuter Student Adviser Kennedy Union Room 241 (937) FAL L LOCKERS Commuter locker reservations for the fall semester will open at 8:30am on Wednesday, August 22. 2 Page 2 Commuter Newsletter COMMUTERS ON CAMPUS Commuters on Campus is an organization that focuses solely on the commuter students at UD. Unlike the majority of clubs at UD, Commuters on Campus hold events during the day and in the afternoon on weekdays, making it easier for commuters to attend as they are already on campus for classes. Some events that we will hold this semester include a bowling and pizza party in the Hangar, a Thanksgiving luncheon, finals week snacks, and more. Be sure to add us on 1850 in order to keep up to date with our events and activities. If you are interested in joining Commuters on Campus leadership, have any event ideas, or have any questions at any time, feel free to contact us by: Sending an to commuters@udayton.edu Messaging us on 1850 (accessible through Porches under the Flyer Student Services tab at the bottom of the page) Or by talking to anyone in Commuters on Campus leadership. COMMUTER LOUNGE KU 118 The Commuter Lounge, KU 118, is located behind the Torch Lounge on the first floor of Kennedy Union. The Lounge has seating, lockers available for rental, a refrigerator, and a microwave. Commuters can access the lounge using their UD student ID. If you do not currently have access to the lounge but would like access, please alopezmatthews1@udayton.edu and include your name and UD ID #. Please allow 24 hours for access to be provided.

We wanted to take a moment to introduce ourselves and our work to you. Student Leadership Programs strives to provide students with opportunities to discover UD s vision for leadership and explore what leadership means to them. We also advise the Student Government Association SGA will be seeking a new Commuter Student Representative. Information meetings for this position will be held the week of August 27th, and are required for students interested in the role. To learn more about this position, reach out to SGA president, Bryan Borodkin. 4 CAMPUS MINISTRY S CENTER FOR SOCIAL CONCERN Advancing the common good. Building a just, sustainable society. In a world of problems, faith calls us to hope and action. Feed the hungry. Shelter the homeless. Care for the sick. Tutor the kids who need help. Protect the vulnerable. Care for God s creation. Learn more about social justice. Lobby political and economic leaders to make positive changes. You can answer your call through the Center for Social Concern. An authentic faith which is never comfortable or completely personal always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it. We love this magnificent planet on which God has put us, and we love the human family which dwells here, with all its tragedies and struggles, its hopes and aspirations, its strengths and weaknesses. The earth is our common home and all of us are brothers and sisters. -Pope Francis PROGRAMS AND EVENTS Help out on SERVICE Saturdays Prepare meals at local shelters, build homes, clean parks, or sort clothing. Transportation and a reflection lunch are provided. Sign up online individually or with a group of friends. Taste the REAL Dayton During Fall Break, learn about our city s gifts and challenges while serving and building community with your fellow UD students and our neighbors in Dayton. October 3-6, Join a Service/Social Action Club Over 40 student-run clubs provide opportunities to engage in our community, advocate for justice and create kinship. Work directly with youth, senior citizens or people with disabilities; construct homes; raise funds and awareness or advocate for justice. Take a Plunge Plunges are day-long experiences to raise awareness of a social justice issue. Visit places around Dayton where social injustices are seen clearly and talk to people affected by them. You may see injustice that can seem hopeless, but you will also see opportunities to live out your faith through service and advocacy. Urban Farming/Local Foods Plunge October 13, 2018 Homelessness Plunge November 15, 2018 Immigration Plunge December 1, 2018 Martin Luther King Social Justice Plunge January 26, 2019 Criminal Justice Plunge February 23, 2019 Public Health Plunge March 30, 2019 Break out of the ordinary on a BreakOut BreakOuts are affordable alternative trips during academic breaks to the U.S. and Latin America. BreakOut groups do service that includes rehabilitating low-income housing, working in soup kitchens, tutoring and mentoring at-risk children, etc. But on some trips, the service is more focused on cultural immersion and social analysis. All trips have a reflection component for students to connect their experiences to their spirituality. Open your eyes: Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month Throughout November, check out the speakers, films, simulation games, service opportunities, prayer services and a food basket drive that all create an awareness of hunger and homelessness, promote solidarity with the poor, and give the campus a way to work for an end to these problems.

Gather info and make great personal contacts. 10/31/18 Beyond UD Panel Supper: Current and former volunteers who graduated from UD will talk about their experiences and answer questions while everyone enjoys a simple meal. February 2019 Celebrate the winner of the Miryam Award The Miryam Award recognizes the efforts of people and groups to change the atmosphere and the potential for women at UD. Nominate any faculty, staff, student, or group for the 2017 Award and come to the prayer service and presentation. March 25, Come to the Table of Plenty Table of Plenty presents open discussions on complex, difficult social justice issues once a month. Simple, homemade lunches are free! Just RSVP online ahead of time. See the world with a Summer Immersion Trip Expand your education beyond the classroom and into a new culture. Four- to eight-week trips to Cameroon, Guatemala, India, or Zambia offer cultural immersion, study of government, social services, religion, family life, economics, and everyday life in the host country. Travel in a group, with a reflection leader who guides you through the joys and struggles of encountering life outside your normal experience. Financial aid available. C mon down to UDSAP The UD Summer Appalachia Program is a 9-week experience of Christian community living, immersion in a different culture, and providing service to the economically disadvantaged in Salyersville, KY. The UDSAPers run a day camp and a teen center and visit the local nursing home, but find the most important things they do is to develop positive relationships with residents in this Appalachian community and with each other.
