2 The Annual Report is Now Available Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 2014 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on June 19th. At the AGM, three staff members were recognized for their years of service. Hospice Niagara would like to thank and congratulate the following staff members on their commitment to the organization: ANNUAL REPORT 13/14 Leanne Doyle (5 years of service) absent from the photo Jeff Devlaming (5 years of service) Amy Uramowski (5 years of service) The Annual Report highlighting our accomplishments is now available online. Please click the image to the left to view the Report. Swing Hard to Live Strong Golf Tournament Raises $20,000! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2014 Swing Hard to Live Strong Golf Tournament for Hospice Niagara. It was a great day for golfing and Royal Niagara provided a spectacular venue. Thank you to Amy Datema, the Committee Chair, and all of the committee members (pictured below) and volunteers who made this day possible. Among the many highlights of the tournament were the golfer photos with the Niagara Airbus helicopter! Thanks again to everyone who sponsored the tournament, donated a prize, or provided services that added to the golfer experience. All funds raised at the tournament will support Hospice Niagara s programs and services.
3 Upcoming Bereavement Support Programs Family Bereavement Support Program Saturday mornings, September 20th to November 1st at Hospice Niagara The Family Bereavement Support Program is a peer support program for those in the Niagara Region whose loved one has died. Children (ages 6-10), Pre-teens (ages 11 13) and parents and/or guardians of the children are invited to attend. The group will primarily focus on how to best help your children grieve. It is strongly recommended that parents and/or guardians attend. The program provides an opportunity for children to remember, validate and commemorate the death of their loved one with others their own age. The program is six weeks in length. Adolescent Bereavement Support Program Wednesday evenings, October 1st to November 5th at Hospice Niagara The Adolescent Bereavement Support Program is a peer support program for adolescents (ages years of age). The program provides an opportunity for adolescents to remember, validate and commemorate the death of their loved one. Grief Circle St. Catharines ~ Thursday evenings, September 11th to October 30th at Hospice Niagara (there is currently a wait list for this group) Welland~ Fall Dates to be Determined Grief Circle is a peer support program for adults in the Niagara Region who have experienced the death of a significant loved one. The eight week peer support program will focus on the grief journey and reconciling what was to what will be. Topics include: grief and mourning, grief symptoms, memories, self care, the six needs of mourning, and the grief journey. All of our programs are run by trained Hospice Niagara volunteers. Please register for all the bereavement support programs by contacting Melissa Penner, Bereavement Advisor at ext. 233 or mpenner@hospiceniagara.ca. Visit Rosewood Estates Winery & Meadery in July and Support Hospice Niagara Visit Rosewood Estates Winery and Meadery in Beamsville for wine tastings during July and all proceeds will be donated to Hospice Niagara. Tastings are $5 for a flight of four wines. Rosewood was built on a foundation of beekeeping and European heritage. Today, Rosewood creates distinctive vineyard-inspired wines, natural honey and, as Niagara s first winery-meadery, handcrafted, innovative meads. Made from the fermentation of honey and water, mead or honey wine is the earliest known form of consumable alcohol. Rosewood vineyards are sustainably farmed. 4 Zumbathon in Memory of Charlene Gaudet Raises $900 Thank you to Pamela St. Pierre (pictured here with Carol) for hosting a Zumba Party in support of Hospice Niagara. The event was held in Beamsville on June 1st and featured live percussionists and a fun-filled day of Zumba! Thanks to everyone who participated and made this day a success. All funds raised from this event will be used to support our programs and services. Hospice Niagara Creates a New Perennial Garden A new perennial garden was created at Hospice Niagara in June honouring the estate wishes and donation of former resident, Hilde Guggi. Hospice Niagara would like to thank the Master Gardeners of Niagara for volunteering their expertise in planning and selecting plants for this new garden. Thanks also to those who helped including Claire Theijsmeijer, Alan and Barb Large, Rose Setosta, Joan Jones and Diana Jones from the Master Gardeners, Hospice Niagara volunteers Nan Spencer and Margaret Kalageropoulos, and the youthful team who enthusiastically helped cut sod and move five yards of topsoil: Kevin and Michael Nolan, dad Alan Nolan and friend Ethan. Thanks also to Rice Road Greenhouses and Allen s Landscape Supply Depot Inc. for providing substantial discounts for perennials, topsoil and mulch to help establish this garden.
5 M & M Meat Shops in Welland Hosts Recipe for Happiness On June 14th, M&M Meat Shops in Welland hosted a fun summer BBQ in support of Hospice Niagara. Through this wonderful event, $500 was raised in support of our programs and services. Thank you to everyone at M&M Meat Shops for organizing the BBQ and to those who stopped by for lunch! Save the Date Thorold Foodland BBQ - Saturday, July 26th Join us for a Bistro Style BBQ on Saturday, July 26th at Foodland in Thorold from 10am to 3pm. There will be live music, door prizes and of course great food. Prices are as follows: $4 for a hamburger, pop/water and a treat or $3 for a hot dog, pop/water and a treat.
