Her honors include an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, the Scientific Research Award of the American Association of Death Education and Counseling, in the U.S.A., and the title in 2011 of Officer of the Order of Orange Nassau, in the Netherlands.
4 WORKSHOPS DAY TWO 1:30-3:00 Workshops will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Some workshops have maximum numbers so please make your booking soon as we are not able to guarantee that you will get your first choice of workshop. All workshops offer techniques that can be used or adapted for use with children and/or young people as well as adults. 1: Writing for wellbeing Jane Moss Jane will explain the difference between 'writing for wellbeing' and 'creative writing' and encourage you to try some techniques for yourself. We will look at triggers and prompts for journal writing and ways to use objects and photographs to stimulate writing that expresses thoughts, feelings and positive memories. Many of the writing exercises will be appropriate both for bereaved clients (individual and group) and for bereavement support volunteer and counsellors to use as part of their self-care. Please bring your pen and a notebook. Jane Moss is a writer who works in bereavement support. She provides training for counsellors, volunteers and others in the field, offering creative writing techniques as an aid to self-expression and grieving following bereavement. She is the author of Writing in Bereavement, A Creative Handbook, published by Jessica Kingsley. 2: What can I possibly say? Accessible Creative Approaches For Bereavement Counsellors Bob Heath As human beings we have always used creativity to help us express our most profound feelings; to celebrate our successes and to mourn our losses. In this workshop we will explore simple, accessible easy to use creative approaches such as Mandala drawing (the creation of freeform images whilst listening to carefully selected music) and Acrostics, which are a form of creative writing that has been used for centuries to help people explore meaning by focusing on a particular word or statement that feels significant. These techniques allow us to move more freely between the conscious and the unconscious and will often lead to important insights into our own current thinking and feeling states. With the use of case studies and practical examples the workshop will aim to equip practitioners with accessible and creative tools that can support clients who are often struggling to think the unthinkable or to say the unsayable. Bob Heath was the resident music therapist at Sobell House Hospice for over 10 years. He has worked extensively in Palliative and Bereavement care both as a clinician and a lecturer/teacher and also has many years of experience working in Dementia Care and Special Educational settings. He has published work in various books and journals and continues to practice as a therapist in End of Life care and in Community Mental Health settings. Bob has presented his work at a wide range of events including The Hay Literature Festival and Medicine Unboxed and continues to offer and develop a range of training courses for therapists and health care practitioners.
5 3: Responding to photographs Sally Despenser The first time a client showed me a photograph, I realised that I had no idea how to use the material therapeutically. Over the years, I have developed some useful ways of exploring what can be seen in a photo, what is hidden or absent, and what meaning the client puts on the picture. This workshop aims to develop awareness and responding skills so that when a client shows a photograph (or smartphone image), the counsellor/support worker can make full use of the possibilities. Working with these images provides a creative way of supporting the bereaved person, helping to draw out the story and the meaning of the lost relationship. Participants who sign up for this workshop will be invited to bring a few pictures of their own for exploration in small groups. Sally Dispenser currently works as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer in two end-of-life settings (Sobell House, and Oxford Maggie s) with patients, families, staff and volunteers. The work is both pre- and post-bereavement. Over the last 30 years Sally has worked as counsellor, supervisor and lecturer in a range of settings (Further and Higher Education, NHS, Palliative Care, Employee Assistance Programmes, private practice) in different parts of the UK. Her Masters Dissertation (1996) focused on the provision of counselling for adults in terminal care settings in the UK. She is a BACP Senior Accredited counsellor and supervisor. In recent years she has also been delivering Professional Development courses and developing e-learning material for BACP. As a freelance trainer she runs experiential and interactive workshops on a variety of topics. The idea of using photographs therapeutically grew out of an exhibition of postcards that she saw in : Storytelling Samantha Adams, Half Moon Theatre A creative expressive workshop where participants will hear an example of a therapeutic story around change and death. Participants will have the opportunity to experience storytelling techniques and reflect on their own experiences with bereavement. Samantha Adams is a professional Storyteller, with over 20 years experience in theatre, schools, charities and community arts venues with adults and children and recently with Richard House Children s Hospice. At Richard House, she has facilitated storytelling and creative expressive workshops with staff, parents, siblings and service-users. She is currently half-way through an MA in Dramatherapy at Roehampton University. For her MA, Sam has facilitated dramatherapy practice in a hospital for adolescents with Personality Disorder and is currently delivering individual and group therapy with pupils at an SEBD (Social, Emotional & Behavioural) school. She leads a mixed abilities Youth Theatre group for Half Moon Theatre and is an ongoing storytelling facilitator for Royal National Theatre, Unicorn Theatre and Primary Shakespeare Company. CPD includes training and delivery of stories with and for children with communication delay. Sam also enjoys gardening, travel and collecting stories. Half Moon Theatre is a small, vibrant organisation in Tower Hamlets, East London, which has been operating since The theatre is a centre of excellence and we specialise in using drama as a tool for learning and engaging with young people from birth to 18 (or 25 for disabled young people). Half Moon is a visionary organisation, striving to challenge, inspire and engage young people through participation in drama and through the professional plays created in consultation with young people. Access and inclusion for all is the thrust of the company s artistic ambitions. We run a range of projects with and for young people with disabilities, in schools and community centres and at our venue.
