President Peter presented Shirley Kukk with a commendation for introducing a new member to the club. President Peter informed the members present that the 20 th October Charter Group events Save our Kids will be held at St Bernard s College where the group will talk about the dangers of the drug ICE. Peter stated that Dr Sherman will be the speaker and he will talk about mental health, he mentioned that there will be other speakers on the day as well. President Peter spoke about the importance of Rotaract and how this can be helpful to recruit members to our club. Dr Peter Condos read out the birthday list so that appropriate fines can be collected, Andrew Lowcock s birthday fine was paid by Lisa on his behalf Peter Condos also spoke to the members of his plan to get members donate $10 and nominate a time for him to complete the course. The closest entry gets 10% of the money collected and the rest goes to our club funds. The Around the Bay course is 135 km from Geelong via Queenscliff -Sorento to Melbourne on Sunday 11 October. Peter reckons he can do it in around 7 hrs at 20 kph average. It all depends on head winds. Could be 6:30 to 7:30 hrs. Timing will be done electronically by the organisers. Shirley Kukk informed the members that the board had decided to appoint her as the wellness coordinator for the club, this means she will see to the welfare of members who are sick in an effort to keep in touch with them and inform the club members of their progress. Shirley mentioned that Jan, (late Rob Thomas s wife) needs to be contacted now that the rush is over, she also mentioned that Jean Abbey was unwell and members who know her may wish to call her. Shirley also reminded members to be in contact with Irene Landgren, Judy Steel, Ian Thomas and Tina Mollinara. Shirley also mentioned that Tammy Willenberg was unwell and she could be contact on her mobile phone. The quiz was conducted by Steve Chandler and all tables had to pay a fine of $2!! The raffle was won by Anthony Taranto but he failed to draw the joker! SPIRIT OF MOONEE VALLEY AWARDS On Friday 2 nd October, Lisa and Andrew Lowcock, Norm and Gwen Mollica and Shirley Kukk attended the Award ceremony. It was a great night, cocktails followed by the Award ceremony with local entertainment. After the presentations we were all invited upstairs to enjoy a live band and plenty of delicious food and drink, an evening enjoyed by all. Our own Lisa Lowcock was nominated for the Spirit of Moonee Valley Contribution to Neighbourhood Award. It is with great pride that Shirley Kukk nominated Lisa Lowcock for the Spirit of Moonee Valley Contribution to Community Award. She has shown visionary leadership skills during her term as President of the Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. This has been recognised by the number of Awards achieved during her Presidential year. Her various roles in the RCE and her involvement in her industry networks make her an ideal candidate.

2 Her contribution to the establishment, building and equipping of the Moonee Valley Strathmore Community Men s Shed, together with Rotary Clubs of Strathmore and Essendon North and MVCC has been outstanding. Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. Lisa has demonstrated a strong commitment to local, international, business and the Rotary communities; and the Rotary theme of Service Above Self. Lisa did not win the Award but was shortlisted for the Neighbourhood section. Well done Lisa, the Rotary Club of Essendon is proud of your achievements and wish you well in the future. Photo of Lisa and Andrew enjoying the festivities. Next speaker 13 th Oct Lisa Lowcock & Alistair Fraser will be presenting on the Men s shed next week, this will be a lunch meeting 6 th October Tuesday meeting Lisa introduced the guest speaker Fr Bernard Lane, after a brief introduction of how Lisa came to know Fr Bernard, Lisa asked Fr Bernard to speak of his work in Lima Peru. Fr Bernard said that Peru had a population of 30 million and most of the people lived along the coastal belt where it never rained and is a desert and the inland part was covered in rain forest but few people lived there. Fr Bernard s work was in the school and the community to try and help the people to grow and become agents of change so they can make a difference in their lives, much like the work done by Rotary, he said. The area that Fr Bernard works is close to a large rubbish tip and living conditions vary considerable in Lima. Fr Bernard explained the social problems faced by the people in Peru and the family violence and the abuse that happens due to the fact that there is not enough work for the men and corruption was a big issue and there was discrimination among the various peoples especially for the people residing in the mountains. Fr Bernard spoke about the factory that is in the process of being built to produce plastic wood boards which will generate employment to the people. Fr Bernard also spoke about the origin and the structure of the mission and the children s residence. Fr Bernard finished by saying that his work in Peru resemble the work done by Rotary and quoted from a saying by the late Robert Kennedy - There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?

4 The Rotary theme for October is the Foundation Six Areas of Focus Economic and Community Development Clubs in our District are doing brilliant work providing people with the skills and opportunities to create their own businesses. You may wish to use some of this information in your Bulletins during the month. Growing local economies Nearly 1.4 billion employed people live on less than $1.25 a day. We carry out service projects that enhance economic and community development and develop opportunities for decent and productive work for young and old. We also help strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities. 7 RAWCS projects updated Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. For several years the Rotary Club of Essendon has had eight projects registered with Rotary Australia World Community Service. These have all been recently reviewed to ensure they are relevant to our current activities and/or that they are still of benefit to the intended recipients. Some of the original projects were very limited in their scope and these have been re-worded or amalgamated to include a broader range of activities which should enhance the level of support to the recipients. All donations to our seven remaining projects are fully tax-deductible. When on-line donations are made a receipt is automatically ed to the donor as well as to the project manager (PM). This ensures we are fully aware of the level of donations to each project. Our nominated project managers have also been reviewed to ensure that donation information is sent to the most appropriate people. We have four projects in Kenya including the Catholic Education Centre in Embulbul (PM Glenn Smith), Obstetric Fistula (PM Tim Anderson) and NewHope for Widows and Orphans (PM John Odgers). These three projects are active and continue to receive valued donations. The fourth project, the Forest View Academy (PM Matt O Brien) is still under review with a new project being developed by the O Brien family. Our two original RAWCS projects in Myanmar both related solely to the Yangon Children s Hospital. For many years this was our flagship project but we now regularly assist a much wider range of facilities. The first project now allows for the provision of medical equipment and supplies to all hospitals and medical clinics in Myanmar (PM Tim Anderson). The second project assists the children of Myanmar through the provision of educational facilities, equipment and supplies (PM Tim Anderson) and encompasses our recent delegation s support of schools, kindergartens and orphanages. Our activities in the Philippines were also originally covered by two projects, both of which supported the street children of Manila. Bahay Tuluyan is now involved in many wide-ranging activities including rice-growing and the management of the Makabata Guest House. After review, the two projects have been consolidated into one entitled Home of our Own (PM Glenn Smith), which aims to provide support and emergency or crisis shelter for vulnerable children, on-going assistance with fit out and maintenance of buildings, and supporting projects working towards sustainability for Bahay Tuluyan. These changes should make our international projects more attractive to those seeking a tax-deductible donation. Please contact Stephen Roe if you like further information.

8 There is more than one Foundation in Rotary. The Rotary Foundation, TRF, where each member and each club supports with regular contributions. This is the Foundation that every club can use to receive matching grants to add to the clubs programs, effectively doubling the clubs money. A simple analogy is that of a bank, the more we put in, the more we can take out. So it makes absolute common sense, to make Our bank, The Rotary Foundation, the best bank, by increasing the yearly contributions by any and every means possible. The more we put in, the more we can take out. The other Foundation is: The Foundation of Rotary, which are the newer members of the clubs. These newer members are the future of Rotary, so anything we can do to support them and encourage their continuing involvement is good for Rotary and good for The Rotary Foundation. There are different ways to support Our Rotary Foundation, Our Bank. There are different ways to encourage members to maintain their support for Rotary. Praise, recognition and encouragement to continue their good work. By bestowing a Royce Abbey Award to one of your newer members, it achieves support for both of these Foundations.
