Sergeant Richard introduced President Peter who informed the members and guests of the following: Tamara Hycenko s father is currently sick and asked the members to call Tamara to support her in dealing with this difficult matter. Peter reminded the members & guests present of the change in name from golf day to Golf day fund raising Relay for life is on this Friday and Saturday Sergeant Richard asked Grant Sheldon to speak about the Relay for life event this Friday & Saturday. Grant stated that the shirts were not ready yet but showed the design that will appear on the shirts & said that they will be available on the day for all those who are taking part in the relay. Grant thanked the sponsors by naming each one of them (see below sponsors) and said that they have collected approximately $10,000 and still counting. He said that over the years our club has collected $175,000 from Relay for Life and donated to the Cancer Council. The roster for the walkers was passed around so that members and guests who had not yet indicated the walking times could do so. Grant thanked all those who are participating in the Relay for Life and asked members to also attend the fellowship function at the end of the event. Tim Anderson spoke to those present of the impending Myanmar visit. Grant Stephenson spoke to all present of the golf day and informed that Mercedes Benz is major sponsor for the event this time, he said there are three or four holes still left and also there are vacancies for a few more golfers. Veronica O Sullivan reminded those present about the Art Show (see below) Shirley Kukk spoke about the trivia night on Friday 26 th February in support of Bahay Tuluyan and asked members and guests to attend on the night (see notice below) Stephen Roe reminded all that the International Committee meeting will be held tonight at the home of John Odgers. Jane Carbone won the ticket draw and was asked to speak on any subject she likes and she said she enjoys cooking and spoke about cooking and the work she does in hospitality, consulting business and sales, she also bravely answered questions thrown at her from members one of which was as to the reason she joined the Rotary club of Essendon, she said to do community work for friendships and to meet likeminded people. 2 As there was no speaker today President Peter spoke to the members and guests present about the drug menace. President Peter said that he joined Rotary after working for several Multi-nationals pharmaceutical companies and informed the members and guests that he observed the enormous waste, mostly involved in advertising in this industry. He said he was appalled by this wastage and the drugs that were thrown away, he decided to contact Rotary so that these drugs could be donated to DIK and said that by the end of that year drugs to the value of $250,000 were donated to DIK and this prompted Peter to join the Rotary Club of Essendon. Peter said that he was involved in the methadone programme and soon realised that the users of this drug were coke drinkers and the sugar had taken a tool on their teeth. He said Methadone is used to help heroin addicts recover. President Peter said that the biggest drug problem faced today is the use of ICE and he mentioned the behavioural issues resulting from abuse of this very dangerous drug. Art Show We are looking for a Volunteer or 2 to assist in coordinating market stalls for our Art Show next year, April 16 th & 17 th, This maybe a member or someone you know may have the expertise required for this job and would be happy to volunteer their time. We anticipate stalls of an Arty/Crafty nature. Please contact Veronica O Sullivan For Moonee Valley Art Show being held again in 2016 and we are seeking your help to make it an even greater success. We are seeking sponsors for the show. The sponsorship packages are attached and we have other letters of sponsorship to use if you are approaching your business and personal friends and colleagues. There are sponsorship packs for every budget and every bit helps so please do your best to secure some sponsors for our event. Early in 2016 we will be seeking hands on assistance for the actual show so keep a watch out for those notices. We are working with the Rotary Club of Keilor East in this major fundraising effort. The profits of funds raised will be to support the International Plastic Wood Small Factory project in Lima, Peru. The organising committee of the Moonee Valley Art Show 2016 (ie. Club members of the Rotary Clubs of Keilor East & Essendon) seek your support to make the 2nd Annual Art Show bigger and better than our inaugural show in For this to occur we need to secure as many sponsors as possible for this major fundraising event. Attached you will find: A promotional flyer that will be used extensively in future weeks A flyer for potential Sponsors detailing the event A table of costs and benefits for every available level of sponsorship A sponsorship acceptance form We seek to finalise all sponsors by end February 2016 so that all necessarily promotional material can be developed to include all sponsors. We seek your support to approach business or corporate contacts that you may have and present them the opportunity to sponsor this prestigious community event in the north western suburbs. Personal direct contact is the most effective. If you are successful, please advise me and I will arrange necessary finalisation communication. This fundraiser will significantly assist in establishing the Plastic Wood Factory Project which aims to recycle the environmental disaster which are plastic water bottles into usable plastic wood panels within the impoverished area of San Martin de Porres, Lima, Peru. The community will then onsell the items to generate money to help to make the centres self-sustainable as well as providing training and work for the locals. St Bernadette's is a non-profit making organization providing free services for children and adolescents in the local and surrounding area, including a Children's Centre, Remedial School, Children's Residential Home, and community outreach program.

4 Rotary Golf Day 21 st March 2016 at Northern Golf Club, Glenroy Arrangements are on schedule for our Rotary Charity Golf Day to be a great success. We have a good group of Sponsors which will be announced at the next meeting, although we would like three more, so if you or an associate would like be a Sponsor please contact Kelly Abfalter. In addition to the event being a fundraiser it is also an opportunity for Rotary Club members to play on a very good golf course in our local area. So take up the opportunity and the challenge and participate in the golf. Again contact Kelly and let her know if you wish to play. Some other things you may not know about the Golf Day: there will be a BBQ dinner after golf and all Rotary members are very welcome to attend; we will be conducting a raffle after golf, and due to strong support from members who have generously donated items (some worth 100 s of $$), we have a very attractive range of prizes to give away. Golf Day will include group of AFL Legends who will play golf and stay for the dinner, here is your chance to meet and perhaps play with an AFL Legend. 5 2016 Fundraising Event Bahay Tuluyan, Philippines Donation Request We wish to invite you to support the Bahay Tuluyan charity through the donation of goods or services for our upcoming 2016 fundraising trivia night. All proceeds from auctioned or raffled items will go directly to Bahay Tuluyan, Philippines. Cash donations are tax deductible, cheques should be made out to Rotary Australia Overseas Aid Fund. Last year s, Trivia Night, raised $11,500 through generous partner donations. Funds raised supported the purchase of a generator for the Makabata Guesthouse in Manila. Funds raised at this year s event will go towards the cost of rice production, pig farming and a water bore, these purchases will ensure Bahay Tuluyan s sustainability. The trivia night will take place on Friday 26 February at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start, at The Pavillion, St Bernard s College, Essendon. Bahay Tuluyan is a non-government organisation that provides a variety of programs and services aimed at preventing and responding to abuse and exploitation of children in the Philippines. They have been delivering social services and programs on the street and in communities since This year s trivia night is being conducted in conjunction with Bahay Tuluyan, Philippines Australia (BTPA). In recognition of your contribution, your company name will be acknowledged on the night of the function. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. Daughter, what do you see? Potatoes, eggs, and coffee, she hastily replied. Look closer, he said, and touch the potatoes. She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face. Father, what does this mean? she asked. He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new. Which are you, he asked his daughter. When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?
