Today s meeting Community Fund raising Post it Social Corner Our Sponsors The Rotary Club of Essendon was Chartered on 21 st May 1935 Volume 75 Issue 24th, 19 th January 2010 Today s meeting Donations in Kind Today s meeting was held at Donations in Kind facility in West Footscray. An informal gathering to start the 2010 year, Bill Dagg and John Gordon kindly provided access to the BBQ facilities for use to use. Attendees included Ian Thomas, Michael Cariss, Ray Langren, Lino Airo Farulla, Anne Ramsay, Tim Anderson, Michael Mahoney, Richard Lawrence, Stephen Chandler, Michael Pepi, Glen Smith and of course our President Anne Rogers.

3 Community Fundraising $11,000 raised for the local community The Trailer Raffle was a tremendous success this year. I appreciated the efforts of all those members who contributed by donating items to fill the trailer (all items were donated). Cash contributions enabled us to buy the TV, bike and the BBQ. The sunglasses and the MP3 player were donated by Graeme and Lisa again. This is a really great effort and enhanced the final result. The total prize value was just under $5000. That is a big contribution. Another big cost is the printing of the tickets and stapling them into books, and once again I thank Michael Cariss for his generous donation. I am in debt to Harry Randell who once again put many hours of work into the trailer roster getting it to the DFO and back. Also the roster for the ticket sellers. Thank you Henry. Thank you to Maurice Mollica who allowed us to use his garage to house the trailer when not in use. The Community Committee worked as a team in the co-ordination of the raffle and I thank them all for their contributions and direction. A team effort well done. Our chairman Maria did some wonderful organising in getting us into the Olive festival with the BBQ trailer and the raffle which added considerably to the coffers. There was also the Carols in Queen s Park with the BBQ trailer- another successful contribution. Well done Maria. The BBQ trailer contributed about $2000 in total. The schools and scouts had a better year this year to last and in total sold just under $4000 in value - $2000 split between them and $2000 for us and they all enjoy the opportunity to raise $$$ they would not otherwise obtain. What would a raffle be without the ticket sellers. Thank-you to all those members and others who assisted in the selling. DFO proved to be a winner as far as foot traffic was concerened and a last minute effort in Mt.Alexander Rd proved very good also. I think all the prize winners (with the exception of Michael) all came from DFO. Prizes wetn to West Coburg, Flemington, Glenroy, Essesndon and Moonee Ponds. I have not had the fgure confirmed from the Treasurer as yet, but net of all costs associated with the BBQ trailer and promotion material, I made the total result just over $11,000. 4 A place to put things AUSTRALIA DAY AUSSIE BBQ Tuesday 26 th January Dress down in shorts, thongs and hats and front up to Rob and Jan Thomas' home to celebrate our 222 nd birthday. This is a FAMILY FUNCTION in the tradition of our afternoon Christmas parties. The Club will be supplying all meat, salads and dessert. You need to bring a CHAIR, drinks, some nibbles, and swimwear for the pool. Don't forget the jokes, gossip and banter as well! All this for only $15 per couple or FAMILY. How do we do it?? Commences 12 noon. And we can handle inclement weather. Ring below to confirm attendance for catering purposes: Rob Thomas: Neil Henderson: ROTARY GOES TO THE DOGS Saturday 27 th February... is when we head to The Meadows for a great evening of fun and fellowship to watch the Greyhounds chase the Hare. Cost is $35 per head which includes: 1. Entrance 2. Race Book 3. Reserved dinner seating 4. 3 course Buffet Dinner 5. waiter service 6. tote facilities All this and only $10 more than our regular lunch! More details when the event draws closer. Meanwhile circle the date. VOLUNTEER DRIVERS FOR MOONEE VALLEY CITY COUNCIL L2P PROJECT Moonee Valley City Council has obtained funding from VicRoads for a motor vehicle which will be used to help learner drivers attain the government-mandated 120 hours of driving practice. The project is aimed at new drivers under 21 years of age who have no access to a private vehicle and no familial supervisory driver. Council is seeking community sponsorship of the vehicle and are approaching a number of local organisations including Westpac. The Rotary Club of Essendon may assist in this regard at some stage. They are also looking for volunteer supervisory drivers who will complete a Council-funded, VicRoads training course. If you would like further information about the training or would like to assist in this worthwhile community project, please contact Steve Roe.

5 A place to put things Myanmar Don't miss out! Have ever thought about going to Myanmar (Burma)? Never got around to it, well knows the time to plan for March next year. The RCE trip to Burma leaves March 27th 2010 and has lots to offer for a two week extravaganza into what was once the British Empires' Jewel. Your trip will take you to Bagan said to rival and exceed Angkor Wat, then back to Rangoon for some serious Rotary work at schools, hospitals and charitable groups. hen down to the Delta to review the RCE housing project. Finally having completed our official work we travel to the Bay of Bengal and Ngapali Beach for some well earned R&R. See Richard Lawrence or Tim Anderson - numbers are limited. ROTARY CLUB OF ESSENDON We have now taken over from the Rotary Club of Essendon North in hosting Polish exchange student, Maciej Kiedrowski. Maciej spent a week at Torquay with Michael Mahoney and is now with Steve & Kerry Roe. While four or five families will be the main hosts, the aim is to share the responsibility throughout the Club. All members are encouraged to welcome Maciej into their homes for a meal or invite him along on a family outing. Shine on Awards Focus on the ability of those with disability The Shine On Awards are an Australia-wide Rotary initiative that recognises outstanding achievement by people with disabilities who disregard their personal situations to serve others in the community. Potential nominees must not only be a shining example to others through their individual actions in coping with their particular condition, but must also be actively involved in community service for the benefit of others. Nominees need to have demonstrated a significant level of achievement through their actions and leadership. For example: Personal success in overcoming the disability. Membership of and leadership in community groups. Service to the community and a history of community achievement. Other special awards or forms of recognition. Awards are presented in two categories Youth (between 15 and 21 years of age) and Adult (21 years and over). This is a wonderful way to acknowledge and congratulate members of our community who manage to excel despite their disability. For the first week at the club he stayed with Michael Mahoney at Torquay. What a hard life with lots of sleep ins, leisurely beach walks and I am told he enjoyed seeing the coast from a unique vantage point. Maciej is being hosted by Stephen and Kerry Roe for the next three weeks. SURF COAST GOURMET WEEKEND Last weekend the upwards of 35 Rotarians and guests travelled to the Surf Coast for what was to be a very big weekend of eating and fun. With over $2,000 raised for Myanmar and other donations received it was truly a great weekend for all. Thanks to hosts Michael Mahoney and Paul and Christine Freestone for allowing us access to their homes.
