1 ANNUAL REPORT MONROE FREE LIBRARY 2017
2 FROM THE DIRECTOR: 2017 was a year of great change for Monroe Free Library. For the first time in many years, we are enjoying the support of a complete Board of Trustees. In fact, our current Board President, Patricia C. Shanley was presented with the prestigious Anthony J. Knipp Library Trustee Award for her stalwart and unwavering service. With financial and policy concerns safely in their hands, library staff can better focus on curating a top-notch collection and providing enriching programming and services. This year, the library held a series of conversational Italian classes, a painting workshop, a lecture from World War II hero Harvey Horn, gardening classes, three free concerts, author talks, book discussions, and many more great programs for the public. In 2017, adult program attendance increased by 20% from the previous year. Also this year, we unveiled our custom online registration system for children s programming. Now, children and their parents can enroll in our programs directly from our online calendar using their library card. Attendance for children s programming has increased by 25% and our Children s Activity Room has never been busier. While Monroe Free Library is bolstering our traditional offerings, we are also looking forward to the future of library services. Our Virtual Reality programs have been a huge hit with teens, who sign up as soon as they can to play collaboratively or to compete for a high score. Our 3D printer is available for public use and we had an excellent turnout for our first how-to session. Be on the lookout for more of these high tech programs in Marilyn McIntosh Executive Director February 7, 2018 Original Layout work by Ian Murhpy. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn t thank you for your show of support this past November. Knowing that the library has earned your trust and approval to continue doing what we do best has energized us all. Thank you.

4 WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS! Barbara Lewis Julie Southwick Joan Shirley Rita Martucci Kay O Connor Sheila Stein Every single day, we are reminded how lucky we are to have a team of dedicated people who volunteer their time to make the library a better place. Our volunteers shelve materials, help process new acquisitions, purge expired holds, organize the community coupon box, and a ton of other things that make our lives easier. The work we do here would be diminished without them. Thank you, volunteers! Not pictured: Keith Landrum, Kay King, Barbara Jayko, Barbara Cullum, and Susan Pfeffer
