1 Women's Club News January 25, 2019 View this in your browser. FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Ladies, Ladies I want you all to know that I have your BEST interests at heart. I am attending all or most of the Recreation Center meetings to make sure we are heard. With that said, PLEASE let's stop the rumors about the space allocation between the Women s and Boomer s Club and who is going to get what and lose what. If you want to get a final word on how this will benefit our Club PLEASE COME TO THE February 13 th general membership meeting!! We will have Jim Sloan and George Kuchtyak here from the General Operations Board to explain this to all our Members and how it will affect us. I believe once it is explained in person to you you will embrace the idea of our club being expanded. Kenlyn Boyd is our illustrious club's secretary. For those of you that don't know Kenlyn, she had provided the brief bio below. When you see her, be sure to say hello. "I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin and went to nursing school at Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago. I ve been actively nursing since years in I gave myself a party when I hit the 50-year mark and decided to keep going. I just celebrated my 12th anniversary at Hospice of the Valley where I am a weekend Telephone Triage nurse. During the Vietnam war I was a Lieutenant in the Navy Nurse Corp. and I left the Navy in 1969 to get married. I have lived in Southern California for 30 years and the past 19 in Arizona. I have been widowed twice but still feel lucky to have had 2 great husbands. I have 1 step daughter in Las Vegas and a grandson who moved to the Seattle area 2 years ago. The current loves of my life are my 2 dogs, Zoe and Frankie. You can see us at the dog park almost every morning around 7 am. Come join our coffee klatch and help us discuss the world s events and solve problems while the dogs play and chase balls. I am also lucky to have a terrific gentleman friend, Bill, who joins me to dine, play cards, go to movies and gives great hugs. Since I moved to Sun City West, I have been a member of the SCW WSC for 18½ years. My neighbor invited me to play poker with her group and I ve been playing at that same table in the back corner on Wednesdays ever since. I ve been on the Board with 4 different Presidents and at 1 time I was the liaison to the club from the Rec Center s Charter Club Committee. I am glad to be a part of this fun, exciting group of ladies and I hope to be an active participant in the fun for many more years." Kenlyn Boyd 1

2 GENERAL MEETING ON FEBRUARY 13TH IMPORTANT: There will be a sign-up sheet on the credenza. We will be having a Special guest from the Rec Center to discuss the Women s / Boomers Club Remodel and Expansion. It is important that you sign up so we can order enough yummy eats! Doors will open at 11 am, lunch will be served approximately at 11:15 am The meeting will begin at noon. Card/game playing will begin at 1 pm after our special guests have a chance to talk and after question and answer time. Nobody will be in the back room. Please bring your chairs into the larger part of our club. There will not be any card or game playing during this meeting. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Geri Lahti is recovering from a recent surgery. She is our wonderful person who teaches Mah Jongg. If you'd like to send her a card, please mail it to W. Hyacinth. 2

3 New Bunco Leader!!! Nina Paris has graciously accepted to be our new Bunco Leader!! Nina is currently Vice President of the wonderfully Large Bunco Club at Beardsley. Please show your appreciation to Nina when you see her in our club. Bunco in February will be held on the second Monday on February 11 th, due to Rec. Center meeting. Nina says the Fee will stay $2.00 and start at 3:00pm and finish before 5:00pm There will be 4 Payouts: Most Wins, Most Buncos, Most Bunny s, Most Lossers Sign Up Sheet is on the Credenza or come at the last minute or stay after playing your regular games!! HAVE FUN!! MEET NEW PEOPLE AND NEW FRIENDS!!! AND WIN!!! Contact Nina Paris for more information Starting in February - We will be giving out a $25 gift card to Fry's every month to the person who signs up or brings in the most people that join the women's club. If you bring in a friend or someone you know joins the women's club, write your name on the back of the card and we will keep count of how many people you bring in. Thank You. New and Prospective Members Coffees Thursday, January 31st at 12:30 pm. Thursday, February 28th at 11:00 am. All new 2018 and 2019 members are welcome! All members are encouraged to invite and bring along their friends and neighbors and introduce them to our wonderful club! Please RSVP on the sign-up sheet on the credenza. If you are bringing guests, please include all names attending on the sign-up sheet. 3

4 We are going to develop a women s club logo. It must be easy to replicate in blackand-white or in color. It can be JPEG file and should be easy to put in an . We will have a contest and the winner who produces the best item will win a $25 gift certificate (or something like that). SIGN UP SHEETS Also, there will be a sign-up sheet for people to pick a Thursday to sit up front at a table and teach new members or people that don t have a group a new game or a game that they like to play. Sign up on the clipboard your name phone number and the date of the Thursday that you would like to host a table to play a game upfront. There will be a sign-up sheet on the credenza asking for servers and kitchen help for the POSSE - PRIDES - FIRE FIGHTERS AND REC CENTER STAFF ON March 16th 2019, from 6:30 am - 11:00 am. This is a great opportunity for our club and the Boomers to pay the Community Back!! Membership renewals for 2019 are presently being accepted. Put your rec card number in the memo line of your check, and deposit your check into the TAN box on the credenza or hand it to Jonella Rolinger, who is there on most days. You will be able to pick up your 2019 membership card and badge dot in about one week. 4

5 The Sun Cities vs. Cancer Upcoming Events You are invited to be a part of The Women's Social Club team at the Relay for Life on February 17th, 3-7 p.m. at Beardsley Park. You don't have to be a runner or a walker - just show up and we'll find something for you to do. Go online to register: relay for life of the Sun Cities. Questions? Call - Arlene Peterson /173-7 p.m. Relay at Beardsley Park. Join the Women s Club Team! The Women's Club will have a team. Be part of the team and help us find a cure for cancer! You can participate by: 1) Join the Women's Social Club Team by going online to and register for the relay. Be part of the team and help us find a cure for cancer! 2) participate in the event at Beardsley Park; 3) buy a luminary in honor or remembrance of a loved one. 3:00 opening ceremony, survivors and caregivers will walk one lap around the track 3:30 team relay (we will try to have one team member walking in minute intervals from 3:30-5:30) Teams will be selling raffle tickets, food, gifts, etc. At dusk, the names on the luminarias will be read. 4) Buy a raffle ticket at the club. 1/21 all week Raffle on exquisite Joan Rivers pin. Weekly raffles will be held until the Relay on 2/17/19. We have a goal of raising $1000 for this event and have over $300 so far. Make it happen! First Aid Kit There is a first aid kit in a brightly colored box located in the lower, left-hand corner of the monitor's desk. 5

7 Please be aware of this additional closure of the clubroom by the Rec Center: March 9 - the club will be closed to allow the SCW Photo club to use the room for hosting a regional meeting of Arizona Camera Clubs. PLEASE SIGN UP TO MONITOR Sign-up calendars are on the credenza. 2 monitors per day Monday - Friday; 1 monitor on Saturday GREAT NEWS! Every time you monitor you will be entered into drawing for a PRIZE! One prize will be awarded every month. Monitoring Responsibilities All members must monitor once per year order to renew their membership the following year. Please sign up to monitor on the calendars on the credenza. If you are a partial year resident, please consider monitoring before you leave for the summer. On the day you are monitoring, a daily key monitor will meet you at 10:45 am to open the door and help you get started. Monitoring instructions are available on our web site by clicking on the link below and are also posted on the monitor's desk. Please do not erase someone else's name from the calendar. If the date you wish to monitor is already filled up with two names, then please choose a different date or call the person who signed up for that date and make arrangements with her. If you need to cancel at the last minute, please call Arlene Peterson and let her know that you are cancelling. We plan day outings toward the end of most months. Sign-up sheets are on the credenza. Please indicate if you are willing to drive. Our planned upcoming trips are: February 22nd, we are visiting the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center in North Scottsdale and having lunch at Harold's in Cave Creek. March 29th, we will be visiting the Deer Valley Rock Art Center and having lunch at Valley Luna in Phoenix. In April, we will head to Cave Creek and tour their museum. Have not decided about lunch yet. More information about all of these trips will be posted in the e-newsletter, on the web site, and on the club bulletin board. 7
