From , obesity in Michigan has risen almost 22% among adults and in 2008, 65% of Michigan adults were either overweight or obese. Additionally, in 2007, 29% of Michigan youth, grades 9 through 12, were either overweight or obese. Why is this important? Childhood obesity has long term and immediate consequences. Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Obese youth are more likely to have pre-diabetes, are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor selfesteem. To help combat the obesity crisis in our state and raise money to support our award winning health and wellness programs, the Foundation will once again host its annual Give and Get Fit (GGF). The purpose of GGF is to raise awareness, address health disparities, and promote physical fitness in Detroit. Give and Get Fit will take place on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at 8AM on Detroit s Riverwalk located in the heart of downtown Detroit. Each year, hundreds of health-conscious metro-detroiters come together for a morning of fitness including a 5k/10k chipped timed race, 5k walk, yoga, pilates and health fair. This fun event is open to the public and provides an opportunity for exhibitors to provide product samples, information and health screenings. We invite you to be a part of this exciting event!
