4 20 Stories High was established in Our work is culturally diverse and artistically ambitious. 20 Stories High is one of the Arts Council s National Portfolio Organisations. We are seen as one of the most exciting theatre companies in the North of England and as a leading young people s company nationally. We usually tour one professional production a year and run a participation programme in Liverpool that includes a Youth Theatre and Young Actors Company. Black was provocative and engaging new show written by Keith Saha, digging deep into the heart of racial tensions in the UK today. The production was a two-hander performed by an actor and a DJ/emcee. It opened in Liverpool in January 2015 and went on a schools and national small-scale venues tour during February and March This highly effective combination of music, monologue and design locks the audience into Nikki s turmoil as her world is completely upended. Saha s play is sharp, funny and honest. He provides no easy solutions yet does allow a glint of hope as to the future. Paul Foley, Morning Star (Black) Tales from the MP3, a gritty, honest and transformative piece of verbatim theatre created by Julia Samuels and performed by our Young Actors Company, toured nationally in 2014, including performances at the new Everyman theatre and a run at the Tales From the essential verbatim snapshots of the lives of Liverpool teenagers. Smart work Lyn Gardner, The Guardian (Tales from the MP3) Headz is a collection of contemporary urban monologues written by Keith Saha and originally performed by our Young Actors Company at the Playhouse Studio and Contact
5 theatre in summer Headz is designed to be a highly-portable collection of performances which can be remounted for festivals and events in the future. Very gripping I love monologues as a piece of theatre and clearly relevant to the target audience. Very clever device to simulate a real story in the piece. Very enjoyable theatre Audience Member (Headz) In 2013 we toured two shows. Melody Loses Her Mojo was written and directed by Keith Saha opened at the Liverpool Playhouse. This was a co-production with Liverpool Everyman Playhouse and Leicester Curve and toured to mid-scale national venues. New commission Whole by Philip Osment toured small-scale venues, schools and community spaces. Great theatre ought to be about taking risks.this play has it in the bag. Alfred Hickling, The Guardian (Melody Loses Her Mojo) A triumph... Spectacular... heartbreaking... much energy and humour. There are few, if any, writers and companies around that can compete with this bunch: catch them while you can, Marc Waddington, Liverpool Echo (Melody Loses Her Mojo)
6 "This immaculately integrated four hander gives us a group of older teenagers acting out the story of their lost friend Holly and it is one of the most hard-hitting and moving pieces of theatre for young audiences I ve ever seen...a remarkable piece of startlingly good theatre. See it if you possibly can." The Stage (Whole) Awards and Commissions 2013 Whole by Philip Osment - Writers Guild of Great Britain Young People s Play Award 2011 Ghost Boy by Keith Saha - Brian Way Award for the UK s Best New Play for young people 2010 Ghost Boy by Keith Saha - Best Touring Production Liverpool Daily Post Awards Blackberry Trout Face by Laurence Wilson - Brian Way Award for the UK's Best New Play for Young People 2008 Dark Star Rising was selected as one of ten models of good practice nationally as part of the DCMS funded Arts Council England s Young People s Participatory Theatre Project (YPPT). Partner Venues Through the tours of Whole, Melody Loses Her Mojo, Tales from the MP3 and Black, we have significantly developed relationships with partner theatres nationally. In particular we have been working with Octagon Theatre, Bolton; Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse; Unity Theatre, Liverpool; The Key Theatre, Peterborough; Contact Theatre, Manchester; mac Birmingham; Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield; mac, Belfast. We have also worked with a number of other venues on recent tours including Redbridge Drama Centre, CAST in Doncaster, The Unicorn Theatre, the Albany, Deptford and The Garage, Norwich.
