2 TAKE ACTION & MAKE A DIFFERENCE ESSENTIAL C.A.R.E. FOR DIABETES This year we will celebrate our 10-year anniversary of hosting the Cammie Johnson Diabetes benefits. We anticipate more than 200 residents from Dunn County and its neighboring communities of Eau Claire, Durand and Chippewa Falls to join together for an evening featuring an open cocktail reception, an extensive silent auction, thoughtprovoking speakers, special celebrity guests and live entertainment. In conjunction with the evening festivities, a live auction will be held to benefit the organization. CARING The Cammie Johnson fundraising efforts provides financial support to those who need temporary assistance with the prescriptions and supplies required to care for their diabetes, helping them to meet their co-pays and deductibles, or bridge gaps in insurance coverage, via the Diabetic Care Fund in Memory of Cammie Johnson. AWARENESS The Cammie Johnson fundraiser promotes understanding and awareness of diabetes and the challenges facing those individuals and families living with it. RELATIONSHIPS The Cammie Johnson fundraiser seeks to partner with individuals and organizations who share our mission of helping individuals with diabetes live full and successful lives. If you are interested in serving on our all-volunteer board, or supporting our work through financial or in-kind donations, we welcome your assistance. EDUCATION The Cammie Johnson fundraiser provides educational support for children living with Type 1 Diabetes, as well as their future caregivers. We support the education of individuals affected by diabetes through camp scholarships which provide affected youth with the opportunity to safely attend camp, be surrounded by their peers, learn more about thriving with diabetes, and simply have fun. With your support we have been able to send over 100 kids with Type 1 Diabetes from three states (Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota) to qualified diabetic camps, via the CBJ Kids to Camp Scholarship Fund. We also provide educational scholarships to support high school seniors in Menomonie, Boyceville, Colfax, Elk Mound, Durand and Eau Claire as well as college students at Chippewa Valley Technical College and the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire pursuing a degree in nursing or medical related field via the Cammie B. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Proceeds benefit the Cammie B. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund, CBJ Kids to Camp Scholarship Fund and the Diabetic Care Fund in Memory of Cammie B. Johnson, all component funds of the Community Foundation of Dunn County (CFDC), a 501c3 public charity. All or part of your donation may be tax deductible to the extent provided for by law. 3 WELCOME A Parents Wish: 10 more hours with Cammie By Mark & Robin Johnson, and Lori Johnson As we mark the 10-year anniversary of the Cammie Johnson event, we wanted to share with you 10 things we would do with Cammie if we had 10 more hours: 1. We would tell her that we love her 2. We would tell her how proud we are of her 3. We would listen to music and dance 4. We would sing, together. (She always got stage fright if she had to sing alone). 5. We would sit and listen to her tell us anything that was on her mind 6. We would plan a trip to camp 7. We would tell her how she has inspired us to help others 8. We would share letters and photos of those with diabetes that have been helped in her name 9. We would tell her about the great students that we ve helped become even greater nurses, to make sure that her dream of being a nurse is realized many times over But mostly We would hold her, and hug her, and cry, and laugh, and cry, and never let go We were talking to friends the other day about Cammie, and how she was such a courageous young lady. We often think about what she would have become, the life she would have had, and the people she would have helped. During our conversation (and there were a lot of tears) we discussed the day that we had been picking out the flowers for her funeral; in that horrific moment, we had been unable to avoid the thought that we should have been picking out flowers for her wedding. In that collision of what was and what should have been, there was an awful sense of tragic loss, one that is impossible to put into words. In that instant, though, it also struck us to not let that be the end. Instead, we wanted to do something to continue her legacy. And here we are 10 years later, still celebrating our Cammie s life, and giving back to our community. We hope that you ll support our benefit this year, and think about 10 ways in which you can make a difference. Perhaps bring 10 friends to the benefit? Perhaps connect with 10 of your family members you haven t spoken to in a while and reconnect? Cammie would have loved that. As parents we, of course, would wish for more time with Cammie. As people dedicated to helping those with diabetes live full and successful lives, we need your help to make sure that parents buy only wedding corsages and are never again left wondering what could have been. 8 SILENT AUCTION Another exciting way to get involved in the Cammie Johnson Diabetes benefit is to provide an item for auction. Your name or company name will be recognized when it is prominently displayed along with the auction item. Many generous businesses and individuals around the area donate goods and services that are auctioned off to raise money for fund. This type of donation is a great way to show your support and generate interest in your product or service. The afternoon of the benefit begins with guests browsing table after table of enticing lots, writing down bids, and even getting into wars to win a coveted prize at a silent auction. Popular items for the silent auction include artwork, gift certificates to restaurants, fitness packages, jewelry, personal care items and spa / salon gift certificates and apparel. August 11, 2018

12 CAMMIE JOHNSON Daughter, Dancer, Inspiration Who was Cammie Johnson? She was a daughter. And like many daughters, she was her daddy s little girl. Cammie loved getting dressed up and going out on a date night with her Dad, including dinner and a movie, or shopping. She also looked forward to going to Camp Sioux in Park Falls, North Dakota, with him. Cammie and her Dad, Mark, made a special traveling trunk that she would take to camp every year. She enjoyed being around people like herself at camp; it was a rare opportunity to be somewhere that she didn t feel different. But when she came home the battle of coping with type 1 diabetes came back. She had been just a fun-loving kid, but her whole life had changed when she developed diabetes; she had longed to be her old self, just a kid, who loved peanut butter sandwiches and dreamt of being a nurse. She collected Beanie Babies, listened to the Backstreet Boys, and loved playing outside - even in the rain. She watched The Wizard of Oz literally hundreds of times. She enjoyed music, both listening and dancing to it, as well as singing. She relished a scary movie, especially one that would freak out her step-mom, Robin. She had a fun, silly side, and a wicked sense of humor, and loved playing board games with Lori. Our redesigned logo represents the music and lightness in her heart, and in her step. Cammie was also an inspiration; she was incredibly brave and faced head-on the many challenges of dealing with diabetes. Through long and stressful hospital stays, and during the daily struggles associated with an intense insulin regime, she tried tirelessly to maintain a positive outlook on life. She was determined, and hard-working; she attended school, had her own apartment, had two jobs and was about to start a third, but she never got the chance. She was a daughter, perhaps not unlike your own independent, occasionally stubborn, and deeply loved. Her legacy lives on in the Cammie Johnson event. As we mark our 10th anniversary, the work that we do to support people living with diabetes is our testament to Cammie, a daughter, a dancer, and an inspiration. Please help us help others.
