1 1 American Culinary Federation Harrisburg Chapter PA 181 MISE EN PLACE Volume 7 Issue 7 July 2009 Hello Chefs, Students, and Friends: Thank you Chef Gipe and your staff for hosting our annual picnic in the park meeting. It was a great day and a super turn out. Thanks Charlie for everything you do for our chapter! I want to thank Debra Bulak and Jennifer Keith for taking the time out of their busy schedule to attend our monthly meeting. Both of these ladies are from ACF Nationals and will be working with us on the conference. We were fortunate to take them on a tour of the area the next day and they were very impressed and excited for us to host next year s 2010 ACF Northeast Regional Conference. It is exciting to see all the members actively involved in the chapter and each and everyone of you contributing and volunteering for this upcoming event that we are all so honored to host. I will attend Nationals in July, with Chef Finch and Chef Dingle. I am looking forward to ACF Nationals and getting more details and Next Meeting: Hollywood Casino Hosted by: Chef John Schlaner CEC, AAC Monday July 20th 7:00pm Steering committee at 5:00pm. The following day was also very productive and our meeting with the event staff from the National office was very informative. I would like to send out a belated Happy Birthday to our chapter President, Chef Peffley. I hope that you had a great day and best wishes. A big thank you to all of the chapter members who have been coming out to the meetings and volunteering your time and support in every way possible to make the upcoming conference a huge success. Just a reminder to everyone that we are looking for items for the silent auction and I hope that everyone will take some time to solicit items and donations for the event. CERIFICATION: There is a ACF Certification Practical Exam tentatively scheduled for Sunday, August 2, The exam will be held at The Restaurant School in Philadelphia. If there are any chapter members who feel that they are ready to test for certification and would like to be considered for a slot at this exam please feel free to contact me for updates and further information. Spouse Brunch on July 11th. This will be the 38th annual meeting. The 2010 academy dinner will be at the Hotel Hershey. Ronald McDonald house: Chairperson: Bob Roebuck Co-chair: Tim Durgey Thank you to Chick Zoll for June. The volunteer prepares a dish chilled in a disposable pan. The Ronald McDonald house is for family members that have family at the Hershey medical center. July is Allen Friend from the 4 Points Sheraton Channels: Chairperson: Mike DeMarco Co-Chairperson: John Reis Chef s on Parade : The dinner was May 31st, 2009 from the Harrisburg Hilton. The event raised over $52,000. Thank you all for your help. Taste: Chairperson: John Reis Co-Chairs: Roebuck, Finch, Gipe, & Durgey The taste was held on November 4th. The event raised $109,000. there were 43 participating restaurants, caterers and beverage purveyors. There were approximately in attendance. There is a meeting scheduled for July 14th for the 2009 event. Blood bank: Chairperson: Mike Harants Co-chair: Tim McGrath 10 units donated so far. 16 units is the goal for If you are planning on donating blood and you do not have a specific individual you would like to donate it to. Donate to ACF PA 181. Ed Byrem has donated 6 Gallons over the past 6 years. Golf Outing: Chairperson: Charlie Gipe Co-chair: Andy Ralph Total of 266 golfers. The event raised $17,000. $10,000 Camp Cadet PRA $2,500 ACF $1,000 Next years event $3,000 Golf outing for 2009 is October 19th, Hershey Country Club. ACF PA 181 Meeting to follow after the outing. 4

Cooking School: Mike DeMarco The cooking school was started by channels as a welfare to work program over 9 years ago. The students learn the basics during the 12 week program. New class of 15 students starts in August Text Books are needed. Chef Mike welcomes the chapter members to come to the new facility. The new kitchen & warehouse opening in June. channels Food Rescue 2009 Kids Café Meals has served 42,911 meals from Jan May. Adopt a Ship program: Mike Harants If you have any interest in participating in the program please contact Michael Harants. SkillsUSA: Cher Connelly, Charlie Gipe, & Tim Harris 9 Students going to nationals. Pennsylvania State Competition is April 15, Lebanon County CTC Tour De Cure: The event took place on may 30th raised over $220,000. Tim Harris has formed a team from the chapter if you would like to ride in the event contact Tim Harris. Goal is to raise $1, Each team member $ rides rides across the country. Central PA is #5 in the country percent to goal Northeast Regional Conference: pa 181 will be hosting the 2010 Northeast Regional Conference at the Hershey lodge and Convention Center. The dates are March13th, 14th, and 15th Committee meetings to plan for the 2010 Northeast regional conference will be held at 5:00 before every scheduled monthly meeting. New business: *Mike Membership Professional member recruits 2 NEW members Receive 2 years for price of one years dues. *HACC A motion was made for HACC to submit an application to be a Certification Test Center. Motion:Tom Second:Charlie *Happy Chef Store is closing in Harrisburg. *ACF NATIONAL CONFERENCE IS JULY 11TH JULY 14TH 2009 IN ORLANDO FLORIDA. *The PA Hunger Action presented plaques to the 8 chef s who the luncheon held Monday April 20th 2009 at the Hilton. *Chef Don Hudson s son Brian was shot and killed in Las Vegas. Thoughts and prayers for his family. No arrangements at this time. The chapter will send flowers for the Hudson family.
