Both CHRPC and Rural Health, Inc in Anna were awarded grants of $50,000. Over 1400 individuals were screened for colorectal cancer at Christopher Rural Health. Linda Schulz Hospital Systems Get Well Collaboration on strategic initiatives with health systems for access to care and policy development, provides relevant, current education for patients and providers, focuses on
2 screening and prevention priorities. Information hotline available around the clock for patient information. Hotline served over 450 patients in our region in Mission Deliver Get Well Free or reduced cost guest lodging program, emotional support and techniques for self care during cancer treatment through Look Good, Feel Better program, Reach to Recovery peer to peer breast cancer support group for those with new diagnosis, Road to Recovery, and wigs provided to those undergoing cancer treatment through the Wig Bank. Heather Eagleton ACS Can, Non-partisan cancer action network that fights to educate lawmakers on cancer and making it a priority at the state and federal levels along with advocacy efforts. Accomplishments include Smoke Free IL, federal cigarette tax, FDA regulation of tobacco products, and increased federal cancer research funding for the NIH. May 14 th is Lobby Day. Research Find Cures Largest non-profit funder of cancer research, contributing to nearly every major cancer research breakthrough. Action Team Updates: Positive Youth Development (PYD) Kathry Renfro Family Vacation Night coming up on the first Monday in February More engagement with Carbondale Schools Access to Care Nancy Muzzarelli Team addresses issues for Access to Care. Recent focus on 211 system. Working to connect to other resource guides. Next meeting is Tuesday, March 17 at 2 pm at the Adolescent Health Center at 101 S. Wall Street in Carbondale ACA open enrollment deadline is February 15, 2015 Behavioral Health Action Team Miriam Link-Mullison Behavioral health in CHIP, working to reduce stigmatization of those seeking services Mind/Body articles the Southern Illinoisan continue, will share 5 year view this month in article
3 Participating in radio program on AM station in Marion, highlighting work of Behavioral Health Program Team will be doing a presentation at Southern Illinois Drug Conference in April Team meets the 3 rd Tues of each month at the JCHD at 3:30 pm Sexual Health Action Team Sarah Steincamp Upcoming Summit of Hope Events Carmi in February, Marion in March, currently seeking vendors ROE teacher institutes to help learn how to implement Ella vs. Plan B and address problems such as how to access, broaden from young women to others Healthy Living Action Team Michelle McLernon Next meeting of the Healthy Living Action Team will be held on Monday, March 2 nd at 1 pm at The Place in the University Mall. American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin will attend the SIU Men s Basketball game on February 28 th at 7 pm. SIH will provide tickets for 500 children, each will receive a yellow t-shirt and those wearing yellow are invited to participate in the Cha- Cha Slide at half time to promote the 5210 Initiative and raise awareness for childhood obesity. Volunteers are needed. If you d like to volunteer meet at the arena at 5:30 pm on Feb 28 th. City of Carbondale Worksite Wellness Health Fair was held on Friday, 1/9 Jump with Jill returning to area schools in February. Carbondale Park District reports Super Splash Park is scheduled to open in May Bicycle repair stations are now available on the SIU Campus Diabetes Today Resource Team Lisa Nation Chronic Disease and Diabetes Self Management Leader Trainings were held in January at JALC. We had 14 individuals from Jackson, Franklin, Williamson, Johnson, Alexander, Pulaski, and Massac counties complete the training for CDSMP and 12 of those also completed the training for DSMP. Planning in progress to bring the Kidney Mobile back to the region in August 2015 to Franklin, Williamson, Perry, Union, and Saline Counties Planning in progress for screening event for Diabetes Alert Day on March 25 th. Built Environment Action Team Built Environment City of Carbondale working toward bicycle friendly community designation this year.
4 Cancer Action Team Caleb Nehring JCHD & SHS received funding for Women of Color grant for screenings for breast and cervical cancer. Goal for colorectal screenings for adults over the age of 50 is 80% by 2018 Group is currently recruiting new members. Contact Caleb Nehring or Angie Bailey. Next meeting 1/22 at 11:00 am at the JCHD Emergency Preparedness Action Team Terry Fulk Workshop for emergency planning and disaster preparedness for residential facilities scheduled for March 10 th at JALC. Disaster Blaster Open House and Cook Out on May 15 from 10am -4 pm at the Southern Illinois Airport. Contact Jay Sims at or for more information. All Hazard Mitigation plan EMA based but participation in procedure planning needs broader input. Volunteer Management Team developed. Traveling wall provided training opportunity. Jackson County Medical Reserve Corp (JCMRC) is working with the Boys and Girls Club for disaster planning. JCMRC is also working with the United Way to improve the 211 Call Center. Encouraged all agencies to enter/maintain current information in the system Working with area churches for disaster preparedness planning Next meeting 4/20 at 2 pm at the JCHD Announcements: Jeff Franklin CATCH Sofit data seeing steady increase in activity that correlates to improved math and reading scores. Working to publish results. Now looking at test scores and cardiovascular fitness. Alexandria Saieg Relay for Life events coming up in Carbondale on 4/25 and in Murphysboro on 5/29. Jo Sanders Faith Community Nursing courses coming up in Summer of 2015 new curriculum will include behavioral health and spiritual care. Teen Conference for girls in grades 7 th -12 th will be held at JALC on February 7 th. Adults are encouraged to bring the girls and stay to participate. Cost is $20, partial scholarships are available. Lisa Nation Six week Chronic Disease Self Management workshop will begin at the Carbondale Towers on February 4 th at 1 pm. 5 Verletta Saxon Centerstone Crisis Stabilization Center is open in Carterville 24 hrs/day, 7 days/week with a goal to deflect mental health patients from the Emergency Department to the crisis center. Allison Hasler IDPH has new medical director, Dr. Nirav Shah. Dr. Shah is a medical doctor and attorney with a focus on legal issues surrounding public health. Michelle McLernon Attended Freedom From Smoking train the trainer course. Smoke Free Campus is coming to SIU in Nancy Muzzarelli Shawnee Health Services opened the Same Day Health Care clinic on January 12th at 400 S. Lewis Lane in Carbondale. Primary providers at the clinic will be Jerry Cameron, PA and Patricia Bodet, PA. Will have extended hours beginning Feb. 23 rd. New OB/GYN, Dr. Ojukwu, starting at Shawnee Women s Health in Carbondale on 1/22. New dentist, Dr. Lee, to begin at SHS-Marion in February. Stephan Ackerman Hospice of Southern Illinois will focus on education in Hospice Red Carpet Gala scheduled for Saturday, January 24 th. Dr. Bruzdzinski The American Cancer Society will, for the first time ever, have a chief cancer control officer. Angie Bailey Rosi Ervin was newly appointed to the SHS Board. Rosi will be hosting a monthly Breast Cancer Support Group at the Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Carbondale. Kathy Renfro On February 3 rd, Harbaugh s will donate 10% of all proceeds to the Super Splash Park. Miriam Link-Mullison invited all to stay for the Press Conference immediately following the coalition meeting to announce Jackson County s IPLAN priorities.
