Since that meeting the Boards have met and completed the needed paper work to merge the two together, and the merger was finalized in June We will continue to offer the supports we have always provided and will continue to conduct fundraising activities. We also believe this will help to have only one identity in the community. As a result of the Board merger the new Board consists of eight members of the former Center Board and six members of the former Foundation Board.

4 On May 18th more than 100 golfers joined us at Ironwood Golf Course for the 5th Annual Marc Golf Classic sponsored by Snyder Corporations. We would like to thank Snyder Corporations for their continued title sponsorship support along with our other major sponsors; Delta Airlines /ASA Connection, Heartland Bank, Paul Brown-First Midwest, Prudential Snyder Real Estate, Doubletree Hotel, Custom Concepts, Peoples Bank, Starnet Printers and Avanti s. 5 SPICE MEET MITCHELL HAHN, who loves to laugh, give hugs and kisses, look at colorful books, dance to music and play outside. Mitchell is one of many children in McLean County that receive services from the Marc Center's SPICE program as Mitchell has Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome causes mental and physical delays such as low muscle tone and delayed cognitive development. 2 here & now T H E M A R C C E N T E R N E W S L E T T E R

6 SPICE HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR FAMILY. IT PROVIDES US WITH PRICELESS THERAPY... Mitchell struggles with daily tasks such as self-feeding, dressing, and navigating stairs which other toddlers do freely. Mitchell is slowly learning to do many things with the help of the therapists at SPICE, his parents and extended family. Starting when he was five months old, Mitchell has received monthly developmental and physical therapy in his home from SPICE. Therapists, Susan Heiser and Dorene Solava come for a one hour session during which they work to enhance Mitchell s cognitive and physical skills. As Mitchell approaches his third birthday physical therapy has included activities such as stepping over obstacles, walking a straight line, and deep muscle pressure exercises. Developmental therapy has recently consisted of such activities as identifying animals and objects in books. The therapy is tailored to focus on Mitchell s particular delays, as they become apparent through different life stages. Rebecca states Susan and Dorene along with speech therapist Donna Evans and occupational therapist Jennifer Nelson have been able to give our family information to help us know how to best accommodate Mitchell s needs. The family attends many of the community outings sponsored by SPICE. Rebecca goes on to say, Mitchell s favorites have been the Miller Park Zoo, McGraw Park, Anderson Pool and the Children s Discovery Museum. The outings give us the opportunity to socialize with other parents of special needs. Mitchell benefits by getting the chance to play with kids; something he lacks by not going to a typical daycare. Mitchell also attends the SPICE transition classes which meet once a week. The classes meet at the Marc Center for an hour and fifteen minutes to experience guided play, sing songs, and making crafts. According to Rebecca, We are very concerned about Mitchell s ability to be productive in a classroom environment, and transition class has been a great help for Mitchell and for us. She goes on to add, SPICE has become an important part of our family. It provides us with priceless therapy there is no charge for SPICE therapy or programseach activity is tailored to fit our family s schedule and Mitchell s delays, while also providing us the opportunity to meet with other families dealing with the same issues, but most of all I feel as though the therapists at SPICE have always been very helpful and patient, and sincerely care for and about Mitchell. Rebecca concludes, SPICE and Marc Center are here in our community helping people be the best they can be and to improve their ability to participate and add to society as a whole. 8 STAFF NEWS Laura Furlong, Chief Performance Improvement Officer and Mark Redmon, Director of Information Technology at Marc will be presenters at the national meeting of the Council on Accreditation in New York City. COA is an international, independent, not-forprofit, child and family service and behavioral healthcare accrediting organization. The presentation session Non-Profit Strategies for Growing into the Information Age detailed the process of developing information systems for non-profits. The presentation highlighted the programs and technology that they developed at Marc Center and promoted our services to agencies across the country. Thursday October 19 Marc Center- Barnes & Noble Book Fair BOOKFAIR VOUCHER Benefiting THE MARC CENTER Location: Barnes & Noble 1701 E. Empire Bloomington, IL Nancy Brady was a special reader for our Jammy Story Time held at Barnes and Noble on June 15. Nancy read Spot to more than 25 participants of our SPICE program. On July 20 our celebrity reader was Ron West of BOB FM who read Pete Rabbit. Jammy Time is held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at Barnes and Noble at 7:00pm. All are welcome to Jammy Story Time. Join us on October 19 for our 2nd Annual Barnes & Noble Book Fair. All you need to do is come to Barnes & Noble on october 19 and purchase books, magazines, music, cafe gift items, and other merchandise with the coupon provided. All proceeds will go to the SPICE program in order to purchase books for their reading and therapy programs.
