1 FRIENDS OF PORTER PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWSLETTER VOLUME XXIX ISSUE 3 November 2017 The mission of the Friends of Porter Public Library is to foster awareness and strengthen this invaluable resource for the community through advocacy, fundraising, and volunteerism. Hello Friends, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE I can't believe we are coming to the close of another year of Friends! I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I and will renew your membership for next year. In looking back, Friends had another successful Ice Cream Social, Big Book Sale, and fundraiser. The Party at Porter with Friends was quite a successful and enjoyable evening for our first try at this kind of event. I hope many of you were able to attend and had some fun. Our Trees and Wreaths event has started with tree pick up starting in mid-october, drop off in mid-november and the silent auction beginning about November 15. Our Annual Meeting is January 21, at 2 p.m. in the Porter room. Hope to see all your shining faces then. Cathy Schultz President of Friends

2 Director s Message On September 30th the Friends threw a rockin good after-hours party in the library. It was the first time we tried something like this and it was a huge success. From 7-10 pm folks were able to have drinks from local brewery Sibling Revelry and John Christ Winery. Excellent food was provided by Houlihan s, Buca di Beppo, Si Senor, Sweet Basil Pizza, Heinen s, Ironwood Cafe, Hyatt, Yard House, and D Italia. We listened to the swinging stylings of Red Light Roxy, had a free photo booth for souvenir pictures, 50/50 raffle and gift basket auction. When all was said and done the Friends raised nearly $6,000! It was an incredible evening. As always, this event could not have happened without all the volunteer hours put in. Friends president Cathy Schultz and Book Nook Supervisor Lynn Pettyjohn led the way with their leadership on this event. It is so exciting to see a new signature event emerging that highlights what the Friends do and raises funds to support your local public library. Sincerely, Andrew Mangels Director Trees and Wreaths Silent Auction Yes, library patrons, this is the year for the Friends of Porter Public Library Trees & Wreaths Silent Auction. It is our holiday fundraiser and helps to make the library look very festive for Christmas! Patrons pick up a bare tree or wreath, decorate it, and return it for the silent auction. Please note these dates and remember: Pick-up tree or wreath after mid-october Return decorated tree or wreath by November 13 Silent auction begins Tuesday, November 14 Bidding ends Sunday, December 10 Bidding winner notified & pick-up item December 10, 11, 12, or 13 All trees and wreathes are picked-up and returned to the Reception desk. Trees and wreaths will be displayed in the library for bidding. 2

Book Nook Sales Everything is HALF-PRICE during the entire month of November in the Book Nook! Stock up on vacation reading, get a head start on stocking stuffers, or just treat yourself to a new-to-you book, audiobook or DVD. Book Nook is OPEN Monday 4:00-7:00 pm Wednesday 10:00 am 2:00 pm Saturday Sunday 10:00 am 2:00 pm 1:30 3:30 pm Special FICTION $5 BAG Sale December 2, 3, 4, 6 All regular priced Adult, Children s and Young Adult fiction books. Regular Sale days are Thursday, Feb. 1st from 9:30-8:00 And Friday, Feb. 2nd from 9:30-5:00 Half-price sale on Sat., Feb. 3rd from 9:30-3:00 $2 Bag Sale Sunday, Feb. 4th from 1:15-4:00 NOTICE Special priced books will not be available at the Bag Sale. We will supply the bags. Although the 2017 Friends Ice Cream Social is a thing of the past, I would like to thank everyone who made the event such a success! The Cake Walk sold approximately 535 tickets in 2 hours, and, thanks to those who supplied baked goods, we had many happy winners. A big thank you to Girl Scout Troop these gals were our face painters for the event as well as helping out at the cake walk. Because of their willingness to help, we had many happy faces walking around the event. Their leader, Andrea Tarolli, helped organize and facilitate the face painting. Also, a big thank you to Mitchell s Ice Cream, who send their employees to help serve the ice cream. Thank you to the Friends board members without whom we could not run this event. Lynn Pettyjohn 5
