2 Christmas 2018 Christmas is just around the corner and to celebrate we have some amazing events lined up. Firstly our Christmas Gift & Craft Fayre on the 17 th November, with a fantastic range of stalls to purchase your Christmas Gifts. On the 7 th December we will be treated to a wonderful evening of singing (and dancing!) from HUM Gospel Choir at St Oswalds Church, Guiseley, details for both events below. We also have our annual Christmas Raffle, tickets are 1 each and we have some fantastic prizes. A huge thank you to the businesses and individuals that have donated. To get your tickets pop in to the office, see Ella at the activites or look out for them at our events. Aireborough Childminding Group We would like to wish you all a fantastic Christmas and New Year. Members are invited to the Aireborough Childminding Group for mince pies and a sing along on Thursday 20 th December am LIMITED TRANSPORT IS AVAILABLE. PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE TO BOOK YOUR PLACE AVSED Christmas Raffle tickets have now arrived and are available to purchase. There are plenty of chances to buy some. You can call in to the office, purchase at our activities or the Christmas Fayre on the 17th November Tickets are 1.00 each and the draw will take place on the 19th December. Thank you for choosing us as your chosen charity for your fun day AVSED Raffle income for the period and a number of online, general, handyman service and volunteer and member donations totaling , , , , Guiseley AFC Charity of the Year We are pleased to announce that Guiseley Football Club, Guiseley Community Foundation and Guiseley Supporters Club have nominated AVSED as their Charity of the Year. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to raise awareness of AVSED and potentially recruit new members, volunteers and supporters. We have had a banner made for the side of the pitch and will be putting articles about AVSED in the match day programmes. We look forward to the year ahead.

4 Time to Shine Age Friendly Aireborough Project You may be aware that 12 months ago Tessa (i.e. ABCD Facilitator) began a project to prevent loneliness and isolation of local older people, using the Asset Based Community Development Model to encourage and facilitate relationships to form, within and between, local Extra Care, Sheltered and independent Living housing complexes in Aireborough. The Time to Shine funding paid for the ABCD facilitator to visit each of nine housing complexes in Aireborough and, where necessary, introduce new inside activities and outside opportunities for socialisation that are available in the area. This has had a huge impact on the residents, housing managers and residents families. The evidence has come in the form of verbal and written feedback to AVSED, either via the ABCD Facilitator or directly. For example: residents have joined clubs (i.e. things like art classes and knit and natter groups), that they didn t even know existed, outside their complexes and managers have been able to signpost new residents and their families to these same groups from the Local Aireborough Activities List that was compiled in direct response to requests from complexes. Inside activities have been created where there were none and expanded where there were some and now, every week, residents at all the complexes have access to a range of activities within their own complexes AND WITHIN NEIGHBOURING COMPLEXES. The cross-fertilization of these activities has led to new friendships being made in the area as well as neighbours within complexes getting to know each other. One of the early actions to be taken by the ABCD Facilitator was to secure the availability of one of AVSED s mini-buses for hire by the older people who are not members of AVSED, on days when our minibuses are not in use. This has proved to be extremely successful and bookings continue to flood in. A spin-off of all this activity has been that AVSED is receiving less referrals for people living in complexes, people have stopped complaining about the fact that they can t join AVSED and AVSED is able to refer people s families back to activities taking place within and across the complexes as well as in the wider community. The project has been a huge success thanks to Tessa s local knowledge, determination and enthusiasm. It has raised the profile and reputation of AVSED locally, and generated a buzz of activity. FREE Training opportunities There is an opportunity for members, volunteers, carers and supporters (over 19 years of age) of AVSED to gain a fully funded Level 2 qualification in a variety of areas such as (to name just a few): Principles of Dementia Care Equality and Diversity Falls Prevention Awareness Awareness of Mental Health Problems This is distance learning so completed at your own pace, with Tutor support, and with no classroom attendance required. 5 2019 exciting times ahead! Update from Sarah Lunt, Project Coordinating Manager So, we started our new 5 year grant with Leeds Adult Social Care in October 2018, which is amazing confirmation from them of the value of our work in Aireborough. We are still waiting to hear about our application to the Big Lottery for 3 years funding, but we remain very positive and we will keep everyone informed of the result. We see 2019 as a really exciting opportunity to look at how we can continue to engage and meet the needs of our current members, but also offer services that encourage other local isolated older people to join AVSED, particularly those we have been unable to engage in the past as we did not offer activities/services which met their needs/interests. This includes people who would like out of hours services, ad hoc activities, and a larger variety of entertainment/social opportunities. The Shared Tables project has been a great example of how introducing a new approach can really work: as it has allowed us to reengage with members who had previously let their AVSED membership lapse as we didn t offer anything which met their needs, and some members who have been with us for years but never participated in any activities. We don t want to expand AVSED, we just want to look at ways of using our current resources to better meet the needs, and prevent the social isolation of the large and diverse population of older people living in Aireborough Save The Dates Charity Night Buffet Come and Join us on the 5 th February for a charity evening at Deeva Restaurant, Farsley to raise funds AVSED. All welcome, bring along your family friends. Further details in the next newsletter Charity Beer Festival Coopers Bar in Guisley will be holding their annual Charity Beer Festival on Friday 15 th and Saturday 16 th March and we are pleased to announce that AVSED, along with a number of other local charities and organisations will receive a contribution from the funds raised, what better excuse to get down there and try out some beers!

6 During our Community Flu Clinic in October, 140 flu vaccinations were administered by 4 GP surgeries. Winter is coming! Cold weather can be seriously bad for your health. That's why it's important to look after yourself, especially during the winter. You are eligible for your free flu vaccine if you are over 65, have a long term health condition or are a carer. Contact your GP. During the cold weather we will be putting in place our Winter Buddies befriending, offering advice and support to reduce the impact of bad weather If you would like to get involved with short term Winter Buddy Volunteering please get in touch. And finally Elvis was in the building! On Friday 21 st September the Pavilion was transformed with balloons, banners and table decorations all in the aid of celebrating Michael Jowett s 75 th birthday. Michael is a very much loved friend and volunteer who works tirelessly for AVSED. Alongside his volunteer work for us Michael also volunteers at Leeds Bradford Airport. Guests were treated to a wonderful show from Elvis! We danced the night away and had a wonderful time. Michael would like to say thank everyone who attended and helped plan and organise the party.
