1 Family & Youth Initiatives NewS May2013 Dear Friends Calling all closet talent in our community including those who make jewelry, bake pies, give facials, lead fly-fishing trips or own weekend or vacation homes. Family & Youth Initiatives is looking for your time, talent and hidden assets for our upcoming for Kids Sake fundraiser weekend including Silent Auction Party Saturday, June 8th, 7 9 p.m. at the Salida SteamPlant and live Music in Riverside park June 8th (12pm-4pm). Money raised through for Kids Sake directly funds local programs that benefit over 550 local kids and families a year. It funds family meals, mentor-kid activities, and ongoing classes for youth. Again, we invite you to get involved ~ whether it be contributing through sponsorships or silent auction items to our for Kids Sake $25,000 goal. 4 CROSSROADS NEWS Reducing high risk behaviors in teens through prevention education, alternative activities, & community service. M A Y Upcoming Events Updates Exciting News!!! C is starting a summer vocational education project set to Begin on May 1st. Youth who are past or current participants in C programs will work together to grow produce to donate to low income families in Chaffee County. Youth interested in working or volunteering on the farm, please contact Kayla at the number below. Paid youth are expected to put in 5 hours of work per week. The farm is located in Poncha Springs so having your own transportation is necessary. We will keep you posted on the project s progress... ~ 9 CCHS students graduated from our TND course on April 19th ~ Building Self activities happening twice monthly on Fridays at CCHS! 5 Nurturing Parenting Program News Parenting Plus is going SWIMMIN Picnic in the Park And Free Swim for the whole family At the Salida Hot Springs Pool May 20th, Monday 5:30-8:00 The first duty of love is to listen. Paul Tillich We know an important skill in a nurturing family is being good listeners for each other. Here are a few reminders from class: Listen with your WHOLE self (remember the Chinese symbol for listening...with your eyes, ears, heart, undivided attention,); Try to hear the feeling/needs under the words being spoken; Mirror the emotions you hear; Try not to give advice unless it is asked for; and Express affection when welcomed. It is a skill we can all get better at if we practice, practice, practice!! IMPORTANT NPP ANNOUNCEMENT!! We are so excited to announce that Nancy Mallett is our new Nurturing Parenting Program Coordinator. As many of you already know and love Nancy, we don t need to tell you what a great facilitator and human being she is. She has been facilitating NPP classes for the last seven years and bringing a wealth of prior experience teaching children and adults to our program. A HUGE NPP WELCOME TO NANCY IN HER NEW CAPACITY!!! Some of our beautiful Salida children We are applying for funding for a NPP Summer Class. If you are interested in a class this summer for Parents and Their 0-8 Year Olds, please call the office and let us know.
