3 British Forces Germany (BFG) Safeguarding Board (SB) The British Forces Germany (BFG) Safeguarding Board (SB) (which includes the European Joint Support Unit (EJSU)) was established under the authority of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) in line with Joint Services Publication (JSP) 834. The BFG SB works within the principles under Section 13 of the Children Act The BFG SB is the key mechanism for agreeing how relevant organisations co-operate to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people across BFG. The policies and procedures are developed by the BFG SB are regularly reviewed and updated in line with the English legislation, regulations and guidance in the 1989 and 2004 Children Acts and Working Together to Safeguard Children The work of the BFG SB contributes to the wider goals of improving the wellbeing of all children and young people in line with the English legislation and practice guidance. Within the context of drawdown, the BFG SB continues to recognise that up to date well-trained staff are the cornerstone to high-quality services being delivered in BFG up until closure. Equality and Diversity The BFG SB is fully committed to promoting equality and diversity in all its work. MoD policy is clear that any form of unfair discrimination or harassment on the grounds of an individual s gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief, marital status, non-standard working pattern or any other difference is totally unacceptable and not to be tolerated. Equality is about making sure that everyone is treated fairly and given the same life opportunities. It is not about treating everyone in the same way, as the needs of people are individual and vary. It does involve respect for the individual and respect for each other. Diversity is about recognising and valuing individual differences. It involves work to raise awareness about the diversity within our community. It is important to acknowledge and value the things that make us different as well as identifying the principles and values that we share. It is one of the strengths of our community that we have individual as well as collective characteristic. 3
