2 SPRING FLING BENEFICIARIES The John Buck Company Spring Fling began in 1988 when a few JBC founding partners found themselves in a beer garden one fine spring afternoon. John Buck suggested, so as not to be deemed a waste of time, that this outing should be viewed, in part, as a charitable function. Thus, each contributed $50.00 into a hat. A second baseball cap held the names of each participant s favorite youth/educational organization. As the waitress pulled the winning name out of the cap, the first Spring Fling was born. JBC Spring Fling has grown to include over 2,600 attendees and now averages over $500,000 of net proceeds each year. 3 Working On Womanhood (WOW ) is a multifaceted school-based, group counseling program that works to improve the social-emotional and behavior competencies for 7-12 grade girls exposed to traumatic stressors and/or with emotion regulation challenges. WOW acknowledges that young women not only face unique challenges, but also have different ways of coping with the same stressors that negatively impact young men. The program currently serves more than 1,750 girls in 31 Chicago area schools. Each week, participants attend peer group sessions led by a trained counselor. In group, they discuss problems, share experiences and receive help in visionary goal-setting. Students also learn respect for others, and most importantly, themselves. By implementing a curriculum based on five core values, WOW helps young girls discover their unique gifts and blossom into the women they hope to be. Core Values Self-Awareness I have power.
