1 NASPA Region I Newsletter September 2005 Vol 3 Issue 9 NASPA Region I Fall Conference Designing Today for a Stronger Tomorrow November 6th-9th Sturbridge, Massachusetts Greetings to all members of Region I! The 2005 NASPA Region I Conference will be held this year at the Sturbridge Host Hotel & Conference Center in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Our theme this year, Designing Today For A Stronger Tomorrow was selected by the conference committee because of the changing needs and roles we play in higher education. The committee's aim is to create a conference with a wonderful balance of educational programs, professional development opportunities, and personal growth. The conference site in Sturbridge, Massachusetts will be an excellent venue for our region and will undoubtedly be a memorable experience. Besides the wonderful amenities that the Sturbridge Host Hotel & Conference Center includes such as an indoor heated pool, fitness center, jacuzzi, miniature golf, lake with beach, game room, jogging trail, etc., the historic town of Sturbridge is full of wonderful restaurants, antique & specialty shops, golf courses, and Old Sturbridge Village is located directly across the street from the hotel. In fact once you come to Sturbridge you may not want to return to your campus! As the time gets closer to the conference I encourage all members of Region I to not only attend, but become involved in our annual gathering by signing up to become a volunteer at the conference. Our region is at its best when we work collaboratively together towards a common goal, and this year the goal is looking at how we plan and design today for a stronger profession both with professionals and our departments in the future. Rich DeCapua Past Region I Conference Chair Best Practices in Reducing Student Suicide: A Law and Policy Perspective A ASJA/NASPA Web Cast The ASJA / NASPA Web cast will focus on the critical law and policy issues of college student suicide. Topics to be discussed include: Data on the frequency of college student suicide Best practices in suicide risk assessment Suggested procedures for responding to student suicide threats and attempts Overview of the University of Illinois suicide prevention program Evolving legal standards for a 'duty of care' to prevent suicide, with particular emphasis on the recent decision in Shin v. MIT Pertinent legal risks for administrators and mental health professionals, including the risks associated with violations of the therapist-patient privilege Suggested standards for parental notification Best practices in staff training and educational programming, including suggesting training materials for resident advisors The risks of 'mandatory medical withdrawal' policies and pertinent Office of Civil Rights (OCR) standards and expectations for responding to students with mental disabilities who are at risk of suicide The live Web cast will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 from 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm (Eastern). 3 September 2005 Vol 3 Issue 9 Page 3 8th Annual Silent Auction BID OFTEN, BID HIGH The largest fundraising event of Region I will return this year to the annual conference held in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Having raised thousands of dollars since its inception, proceeds sustain the Regions commitment to students and new professionals in the form of scholarships that subsidize the cost of attendance at our annual conference. In addition to their attendance, recipients of the Catch a Rising Star and the Richard F. Stevens Outstanding Graduate Student Awards are honored at the annual conference. (For information about these and other awards, please visit the Awards link on the NASPA Region I website.) As well as funding scholarships, a portion of the proceeds from the Auction is given to a local non-profit agency in the community in which the conference is held. Among the agencies that have received a contribution are the Juliana Valentine McCourt Children s Education Fund, Voices Against Violence and the Families for Freedom Scholarship Fund. We will continue this practice and again provide a donation to a local nonprofit to be announced next month. How can you contribute to this years Auction? There are three ways for you to get involved with the 8 th Annual Silent Auction. Contributions of virtually any kind (tickets to sporting events or concerts, gift baskets, professional presentations, craft items, gift certificates) are accepted for inclusion in the Auction. Big-ticket-items at previous conferences have included tickets to Red Sox/Patriots games, weekend get-a-ways, wine baskets, quilts and professional training/consulting programs. While contributions make up a large piece of the Auction, the excitement of bidding is another way for conference attendees to get involved. Cash, checks and credit cards are acceptable forms of payment. As you will hear at the conference, Bid Often, Bid High! Lastly, volunteers are an integral part of the execution of this event. Assisting with set-up, break-down, and everything in between, volunteers help to ensure a smooth running Auction year after year. We have a wonderful recognition program planned during our fall conference in Sturbridge, MA November 6-9, The 2005 State and Regional Award Processes are now completely electronic and must be completed on line via the following link: The instructions are clear and easy to follow. The people you ll meet at these events and the knowledge you ll gain are invaluable! One Reason Why You Should Get More Involved in NASPA: You ll develop a network of colleagues who serve as life-long consultants and friends!

As the fall semester gets underway, we hope you re already thinking about the great opportunities awaiting you at the 88 th NASPA annual conference! The amazing cultural, political, and social landscape that is unique to Washington, D.C. will provide us with a most inspiring setting for the 2006 national conference. We invite you to join your NASPA colleagues in D.C. as student affairs educators from across the globe gather to dialogue and exchange ideas on Individual Commitment Collective Action and the challenges, opportunities, and best practices in this wonderful field of ours. The Marriott Wardman Park Hotel will serve as our primary conference hotel, and it is located in the Washington D.C. neighborhoods of Woodley Park and Cleveland Park. This wonderful hotel offers the perfect balance of landmark charm, historical significance, and modern sophistication in Washington, D.C. This area of the city features restaurants with a variety of cuisines from around the world as well as trendy shops. The Marriott Wardman Park is the city s largest hotel and conference facility and is situated just blocks from the National Zoo and Rock Creek Park and minutes from the National Cathedral. With its on-site Woodley Park Metro station and convenient location along Connecticut Avenue, the Marriott Wardman Park puts you within minutes by foot, car, or Metrorail of all of the city s vast cultural and natural points of interest. The Omni Shoreham Hotel is our other conference facility, and it is located right across the street from the Marriott Wardman and offers all of the conveniences of the area. Program Proposals Due, September 16th You may recall that the original deadline to submit programs for the 2006 NASPA Conference is upon us (September 9th). Realizing that you have many other issues on your mind at the moment, we have extended the deadline for all NASPA members to submit program proposals to September 16th. We hope that if you had planned to submit a program proposal, you will find sometime in the next week to get back to it and submit it.
