2 LETTER FROM THE CEO Dear Friend of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida, Throughout the year, the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida (EFOF) offers unique events that work to provide information to individuals and families impacted by epilepsy and raise awareness about opportunities to help our members. Sincerely, Karen Basha Egozi Chief Executive Officer Epilepsy Foundation of Florida DAY AT THE CAPITOL EVENTS July June 2018 NOVEMBER EPILEPSY AWARENESS MONTH EVENTS To commemorate National Epilepsy Awareness Month the Foundation hosts its signature Let s Talk About It events statewide to spread education and awareness. With attendance well into the hundreds, events are held in each office location and range from a masquerade themed cocktail party to a formal sit down dinner. We also encourage our community supporters, sponsors, donors and clients to host their own DIY (do-it-yourself) events to come out in support of individuals with epilepsy and help to remove the stigma. The DIY events can range from jeans day at the office, a lemonade stand, or a percentage day at your local restaurant or grocery store everyone is encouraged to participate and give back. This year, there is an opportunity to sponsor our Day at the Capitol event taking place in the spring. The Tallahassee-based event will allow for executive staff, board members, donors and key stakeholders from around the state to come together during the Legislative Session to meet with legislators, review policy and host the organization s Purple= Red + Blue fundraiser. The evening reception will focus on recognizing those state leaders who have been supportive of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida and of epilepsy sufferers as a whole across Florida. Last year participants had the opportunity to meet with over 25 Florida Legislators throughout the day, to discuss the importance of advocating for epilepsy WALK THE TALK FOR EPILEPSY Throughout the months of April and May, walks to raise awareness of epilepsy will be taking place across Florida. This is an occasion for friends, family and loved ones of those living with epilepsy to come together, organize a team and walk to support this cause. The walks have become a staple in the epilepsy community and are highly attended, as well as receive a great deal of media coverage due to the range of activities, vendors and sponsors associated with the event.

4 CAMP BOGGY CREEK Camp Boggy Creek was created by Paul Newman as one of his famous Hole in the Wall camps as a non-profit medical camping center located in Eustis, Florida, specifically designed and equipped for kids ages 7-16 who have chronic or life threatening illnesses. The camp s on-staff medical teams and volunteers ensure the environment is physically safe and medically sound. Due to the substantial emotional and financial toll that falls upon families dealing with childhood epilepsy, EFOF covers the entire cost for the child to attend camp. Our goal is that the kids have a chance, often for the very first time, to safely do activities that were previously off-limits but are merely what other kids regularly do such as hiking, swimming, biking, horseback riding, and archery. Going to camp for our littlest clients of the Foundation is truly a gift. The time spent at Boggy Creek is empowering, builds independence and self-esteem and forges strong bonds of friendship that help the kids overcome their feelings of fear and isolation. This past year, EFOF was proud to sponsor 77 children with epilepsy to attend Camp Boggy Creek, and 24 families to attend the wonderful family weekend. 6 EPILEPSY FOOTPRINT PREVENTION & EDUCATION EVENTS STATEWIDE SERVICE ANNUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida (EFOF) leads the fight to overcome the challenges of living with epilepsy and to accelerate therapies to stop seizures, find cures, and save lives. Approximately 400,000 individuals suffer from epilepsy across the state with 84,000 of those sufferers being children. Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disease in the United States after migraine, stroke, and Alzheimer s disease. Epilepsy is more common than Parkinson s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy and Autism combined. 1 in 26 people in the United States will develop epilepsy at some point in their lifetime and 1 in 10 will have a seizure. EPILEPSY FOUNDATION OF FLORIDA Today, 12 percent of Americans with with epilepsy live in Florida, and EFOF is leading the fight to overcome the challenges of living with epilepsy and to accelerate therapies to stop seizures, find cures, and save lives. When faced with a diagnosis as life-altering as epilepsy, early intervention is vital to overcoming the many obstacles of the disease. In these moments of crisis, the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida is the leading source of information for sufferers and their families looking for answers and advice to best treat epilepsy. Social Services: Offered comprehensive case management services to approximately 2,756 clients and families. Held 174 support group meetings with 1,527 attendess and organized initiatives targeted to African-American, Hispanic and Haitian communities. Medical Services: Provided more than 3,350 need-based medical treatments and services to clients which consisted of: initial neurological evaluations, follow-up examinations, medical treatment, imaging services (MRI, CT Scan, Bone Scan), blood tests, EEG s, and other tests for a consistent program of medical management.
