1 THE ARCHWAY JUNE 2013 Issue # The Archway June 2013 Feed My Sheep Brookside Fundraiser a Success by Pastor Sara Ross What a great Saturday we had on our church steps and in our fellowship hall raising money for Brookside Hunger Center, our neighborhood food pantry, as well as other Archwood ministries! Despite smaller crowds than previous years we were able to raise approximately $850 for Brookside and $300 for other Archwood ministries. Thank you to all who contributed in so many ways to make this event a success, not just monetarily but as an opportunity to be welcoming to our fellow neighbors in Brooklyn Centre neighborhood. So much happened Saturday at our church home to inspire us to reach out to our neighbors and each other. And we were strengthened the following day to share some of those inspiring moments with each other. Events like these make it even clearer to me that an integral part of our calling as a church is to be good neighbors-- to offer ourselves and this great resource we have in our building as a welcome to our community in the name of Christ. In so doing we celebrate all that Christ has done and can do to bring us together to be a stronger community. We can put our faith into action by reaching out to get to know our neighbors better so that Spontaneous live entertainment at Feed my Sheep we can respond in our faith to grow in deep beneficial connective community, learning together step by step what it means to be good neighbors. Our world in all its connectivity and smallness can be more and more alienating. I believe the answer for how we respond as the body of Christ in our time is intimately connected to loving our neighbor as ourselves. Let s continue to learn what that means together as we reach out to be an integral part of our neighborhood.

2 THE ARCHWAY JUNE 2013 Issue # 2 Volunteering Update THANK YOU so much to those of you who have volunteered to clean and do yard work. We are already starting to see the difference! If you would like an opportunity to give a special offering to the life of Archwood please consider becoming a part of our volunteer cleaning & yard work team. For a while now we have had limited paid hours for cleaning. Limited hours means our church needs volunteers to supplement the other hours needed to do more than just the bare minimum. Two hour shifts that you set to fit your schedule would develop into a sustainable on going solution. If this works out maybe later in the year it may prove to be a way to save money. It is worth a try and either way we can profit in having a church we are proud to call our place of worship and a Christ centered shared space with the community. To volunteer for indoor work contact Linda Grosse at lindagrosse@att.net; for outdoor work contact Aida Colon at colon429@gmail.com. Feel free to contact us with any questions and descriptions of the jobs available. Remember this is your opportunity to give a special offering to the life of Archwood!

4 THE ARCHWAY JUNE 2013 Issue # 4 Governing Body Meeting Minutes- May 23 rd, 2013 Members present- Michelle Hintz, Charlotte Hisel, Indigo Lowe, Linda Davey, Linda Grosse, Moderator, Pastor Sara Ross, Christy Trudo, Treasurer, Debbie Wilson Members absent- Chris Brooks, Judy Schumann, Clerk, Aida Colon Opening reflection at 6:33 by Pastor Sara. Rev. Gerald Madasz, former pastor of recently closed St. Luke s UCC in Brooklyn was present and spoke to the Governing Body about a request to be licensed through Archwood in order to continue doing home visits and offering communion to the 20 or so shut-ins that had been members of St. Luke s UCC. They are in no position to find another church community at this stage. The WRA denied his initial request to be licensed through them due to the fact that he needs to be connected to a local congregation in his licensing. The Associations General Minister suggested Archwood might be willing to sponsor his licensure. He served St. Luke s UCC for 14 years. Rev. Madasz is not an ordained minister, but is a certified grief counselor, and is on the staff of the Nichols-Andrade Funeral Home in Lakewood. If we would decide to license him, he offered that there may be ways he could be supportive to the ministries of the Archwood congregation. We discussed potential issues related to this, including how we may be able to support his ministry, and if he is a good fit as a representative of Archwood. The Body determined we needed to get to know him better before making this decision and that the details would need to be figured out between Pastor Sara and Jerry. Christy motioned to enter into a period of days of mutual exploration to further look into issues surrounding Rev. Madasz s proposed licensing. The motion passed. The minutes from last week were accepted with the correction that Indigo Lowe was not at the last meeting. TREASURER S REPORT- As of today, we have spent the money designated to repair the columns and the job is complete. The sanctuary windows and roof repair will take up the remaining money the congregation approved to draw from the endowment. The Nace Trust monies ($6700) were transferred over into our general account and will be very helpful to our bottom line. PASTOR S REPORT- The goal to get the in-house payroll management on line is going well. Church Windows is charging us $35 to get online training. Linda Davey (and Sara and Greg) will be going through the training to do the payroll. The goal is to get it started July 1st. We determined to switch over to this system in order to save about $2000 a year. The Junior Jitterbugs do not need our space for the remainder of the school year, but will start in the fall Tuesday and Wednesdays after school in the gym. Last year, we signed a two-year lease with the YMCA. They have just informed us they will be discontinuing the program this fall due to financial issues. They are willing to pay the rent designated in their lease for next year to the completion of the lease in August of This gives us 14 months to determine another good fit for the space and time. The Mission and Vision Statement meeting will be June 22nd. PROGRAMMING BODY MEETING- We need volunteers for the Feed My Sheep festival. Brookside Hunger Center has closed their resale shop. We received most of their left over items for the rummage sale. We will be splitting the profits from the rummage sale 50/50 with Brookside. PERSONNEL COMMITTEE REPORT- No report. There have been a few volunteers for the supplementary custodial staff. We still need more, to round out the program. Encourage others to help if you are not in a position to do so. BUILDING COMMITTEE REPORT- They have chosen contractor John Termini to do work on the roof. He will be starting soon; there needs to be some patching on the flat portions of the roof and also maintenance on the downspouts. The Archway deadline will be May 31st. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 with a prayer by Linda Grosse. Respectfully submitted, Charlotte Hisel, Substitute Clerk

7 THE ARCHWAY JUNE 2013 Issue # 7 Archwood Mission and Vision Statement Meeting June 22 Join us for a meeting Saturday, June 22nd from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (including lunch) in the church parlor to discuss possible language for a current mission and vision statement for Archwood UCC. Pastor Sara will present some potential statements as a jumping off point for discussion in order to determine together a refined, agreed upon statement. We will also discuss how our emerging vision could fit into a current grant opportunity from the Western Reserve Association and others. Your feedback is important to this process. Notes from this meeting will be shared with the congregation to ensure those who are not able to join us can continue to be informed and offer feedback as we continue to refine the statement over the next several weeks. Setting up at Archwood s Feed My Sheep bake sale.
