The decision to transfer an embryo or not at the time of recipient presentation is not always easy. This presentation summarizes the literature on endocrine parameters such as progesterone and estradiol levels at time of transfer as well as exogenous hormone application at time of transfer. Ultrasonographic observations of ovaries and uterus including some own data will be discussed. ii) Sanitary considerations at collection, search, freezing and transfer of bovine embryos. Recent studies showing that certain microbes may survive the freezing process of embryos and cause early pregnancy failure make it seem important to review and reconsider our current sanitary protocols during embryo collection until transfer. It will also touch on the influence of pre-natal maternal nutrition on the reproductive development of their progeny as well as the efficacy of some dietary supplementation strategies to augment post pubertal fertility. 2:15 PM 3:15 PM SESSION 10: The au courant developments in sex sorted semen and applications in embryo technology programs Presented by Dr. R (Vish) Vishwanath, STgenetics, Navasota, TX, USA It is fair to say that sex-sorting of semen has come of age as it has entered a new era with advanced biochemical techniques and high throughput machinery. This has made the technology easily accessible with the performance of the product improving continually. The original application portal for sex-sorted semen was through IVF platforms but over time the dairy and beef industries have adopted this technology widely in AI programs. Current progress in the application of sex sorted semen in embryo technology programs will be discussed. This pathogen has a known ability to persist on embryos following standardized embryo flush washing procedures. This presentation will discuss the epidemiology of U. diversum as well as case reports and investigations into the potential for spread of the organism associated with embryo transfer. 4:30 PM 5:30 PM SESSION 12: Early pregnancy losses in dairy cattle: importance, predisposing factors, and implications for management 5:30 PM 5:45 PM Closing Remarks Presented by Dr. Eduardo de Souza Ribeiro, University of Guelph, Canada The average conception risk in North American dairy herds has been suboptimal and stagnant for many years. Early pregnancy losses are substantial and contribute importantly to low conception risk and consequent reproductive inefficiency of lactating cows. 12 HOW TO GET TO MONTRÉAL, QUÉBEC BY AIR: You will arrive in Montréal at the Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport GROUND TRANSPORTATION: (from airport to hotel) 747 SHUTTLE BUS: The 747 shuttle bus service is the most cost effective and efficient way to travel between the airport and the centre of Montréal and runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Once you leave the customs hall, follow the signs for shuttle bus/navettes just outside the terminal. Travel time may vary between 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Wi-Fi service is available on most 747 buses. The fare is $10 (CDN) for unlimited travel throughout the STM bus and metro networks during 24 consecutive hours. The fare card can be purchased at the airport from the automated dispensers which accept cash, debit and credit cards. If paying on-board, only COINS ARE ACCEPTED NO BANK BILLS. He has served in a variety of roles at Trans Ova Genetics since he joined the team in 2012, including a Professional Service Veterinarian and Production Assistant Manager in Sioux Center, IA. 16 The Convention Speakers continued Dr. Bronwyn Crane Dr. Bronwyn Crane, a native of Prince Edward Island, was exposed to large animal practice and embryo transfer from a young age through her father Dr. Mel Crane. After graduation with her DVM from the University of Prince Edward Island in 2002, she completed an Internship in Food Animal Medicine and Reproduction and a Masters of Science in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. This was followed by a Residency in Theriogenology at Oregon State University and Diplomate status with the American College of Theriogenologist in Dr. Crane has been a faculty member at the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI in the Department of Health Management since As the Theriogenology service chief, Dr. Crane oversees the multi-species Theriogenology curriculum and clinical practice at AVC. Dr. Crane is a certified practitioner herself and a member of the CETA certification committee since Current research interests include the application of technology to advance fertility in dairy cows. Outside of work, her life remains busy with 3 active boys and sharing in the daily activities of Eastriver dairy farm and Woodmere Standardbred farm with her partner Bruce Wood. Dr. Gilles Fecteau Gilles Fecteau graduated from the Université de Montréal, St-Hyacinthe veterinary school in 1986 and completed an internship in food animal medicine and surgery. From 1987 to 1990, he was a bovine clinician in house at St-Hyacinthe. In 1993, he completed his residency in large animal medicine at UC Davis and become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). He is currently full professor in the Clinical Sciences department in St-Hyacinthe. In 1999, he received the Pfizer excellence research award and in 2003 the Université de Montréal teaching award. Gilles Fecteau is first and foremost a clinician but his interest in research are infectious diseases of dairy cattle and newborn infectious diseases. Dr. John Hasler Dr. John F. Hasler earned B.A. (1966) and M.A. (1969) degrees in zoology from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Following two years of service in the US Army, he received a Ph.D. in reproductive physiology from the University of Illinois in 1974, after which he joined the Embryo Transfer Laboratory at Colorado State University. In 1979, he and a partner started Em Tran, Inc. in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania and they spent the next 22 years engaged in commercial embryo transfer. Em Tran was among the first organizations to establish a market for frozen embryos in a number of foreign countries and was a leader in introducing splitting, in vitro fertilization and embryo sexing technologies to the embryo transfer industry. Dr. Hasler was a founding member of the American Embryo Transfer Association and served as the first secretary/treasurer of the organization and also served two terms as secretary/treasurer of the International Embryo Transfer Society. Dr. Hasler has maintained active research collaborations with scientists at several universities and has published a number of papers involving embryo transfer and related technologies. Having sold his interest in Em Tran, Inc. in 2001, Dr. Hasler now lives near Ft. Collins, Colorado and serves as a technical consultant to Vetoquinol. Dr. David Kenny Professor David Kenny is a Principal Research Scientist in Ruminant Nutritional Physiology with Teagasc in Ireland and also holds an adjunct professorship at University College Dublin. He has twenty years of research experience in the biological control of a range of economically important traits to ruminant livestock production systems. His work is based on in-depth study and the application of state-of-the-art physiological and molecular approaches to these complex, multidimensional traits. He has led a number of large multi-partner research projects and has supervised the studies of 17 Ph.D. and nine M.Sc. students to completion, as principal supervisor. His research has resulted in the publication of 150 full length internationally peer reviewed scientific manuscripts to-date as well as many industry targeted technical reports. He is currently leading two large nationally funded projects examining the effect of early life nutrition on the molecular physiology of puberty and fertility of both male and female cattle. Dr. Jonathan Lehouiller Dr Jonathan Lehouiller, 2013 graduate from St-Hyacinthe Faculté de médecine vétérinaire, has been a general large animal practitioner and now focuses on bovine theriogenology. Dr Lehouiller is a partner in Clinique Vétérinaire Centre-du-Québec inc. His main work focus is bull breeding soundness and semen freezing, as well as embryo transfer and ovum pick-up. In 2016, Dr Lehouiller was certified as a Boviteq ovum pick-up field veterinarian. Mapletoft Professor Emeritus, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan Dr. Reuben John Mapletoft graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph in 1967, and after 3 years in veterinary practice and 3 years at the Veterinary School at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, he enrolled in the University of Wisconsin Endocrinology Reproductive Physiology Program where he received his MS and PhD degrees. In 1977, he joined the Western College of Veterinary Medicine as Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Clinical Studies. In 1998, he became Head of the Department of Herd Medicine and Theriogenology and in 2000, the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. In 2002, Dr. Mapletoft took a one year Leave of Absence to consult in the pharmaceutical industry, and in 2004, he took 50% appointment with the University of Saskatchewan so that he could continue consulting. On July 1, 2013, he retired from the University of Saskatchewan as Professor Emeritus. Dr. Mapletoft has been active in research in reproductive biology and the application of assisted reproductive technologies in cattle for more 35 years. He is world renowned for his work in bovine embryo transfer, ovulation synchronization and superovulation and he has been instrumental in developing the embryo transfer industry in Canada and throughout several other countries around world. Dr. Mapletoft has also been very active in technology transfer; he has given over 250 invited lectures in more than 40 countries and beginning in 1980, he has been conducting embryo transfer workshops in several countries around the world, including the USA. Dr. Mapletoft has also contributed more than 300 published abstracts and conference proceedings, and authored more than 175 refereed publications in scientific journals. He is a Past-president of the International Embryo Transfer Society (IETS) and Founding President of the Canadian Embryo Transfer Association (CETA). He was Chairman of the Import/Export Committee of the IETS for 10 years and has served on several IETS committees. He has been a member of the CETA Certification Committee since its inception. Dr. Eduardo de Souza Ribeiro Eduardo Ribeiro grew up on a family farm in a small town located in southern Brazil. In 2008, he graduated in Veterinary Medicine at the Santa Catarina State University and, in 2009, he moved to USA to start his graduate studies in the Department of Animal Sciences at University of Florida. He completed his MSc degree in 2011 and his PhD degree in In 2016, Dr. Ribeiro joined the Department of Animal Biosciences at the University of Guelph as Assistant Professor in Reproductive Physiology. His multidisciplinary research program examines the problem of subfertility in dairy cattle at all levels of organization, from farm enterprise to cow to tissue to cell to gene. One of the main objectives of his research is to understand the nature and causes of pregnancy losses in bovine, and to develop strategies that ultimately improve pregnancy survival and reproductive efficiency in dairy herds. Dr. Claude Robert Dr. Claude Robert is Professor of Animal Sciences in the Faculty of Food & Agricultural Sciences at Laval University in Québec City, Canada. He earned a BSA in biochemistry from University of Sherbrooke and then moved on to do an MSc on swine genetics within the federal laboratories of Agri-Food Canada at the Lennoxville Research Station. He earned his PhD from Laval University where he worked on oocyte developmental competence. He conducted his postdoctoral research on the impact of culture conditions on bovine embryos at the University of Guelph. In 2003, Dr. Robert was hired at Laval University as Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Sciences. He was promoted to Professor in He is co-director of the Centre de recherche en reproduction, développement et santé intergénérationnelle which is a unique bi-faculty Centre composed of researchers from the Faculties of Medicine and Food & Agricultural Sciences. He was co-pi and director of platform development for the National Strategic Network called EmbryoGENE. Dr. Robert s research focusses on early embryonic development with a focus on oocyte growth, the maternal embryonic transition and blastocyst development. 18 The Convention Speakers continued Dr. George Seidel George E. Seidel, Jr., (B.S., Penn State) grew up on a dairy farm in Pennsylvania. In graduate school he studied bull semen (M.S., Cornell) and endocrinology of superovulating calves and development of resulting embryos (Ph.D., Cornell.) His postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School evaluated oocytes with electron microscopy. Since 1971 he has been at Colorado State University, currently University Distinguished Professor, emeritus. Between 1973 and 1983 more than 6000 bovine embryos were collected from donor cows and transferred to the uteri of less valuable recipients. Fees for these services funded teaching and development of nonsurgical recovery and transfer techniques for bovine and equine embryos, cryopreservation of embryos, and a simple procedure for bisecting embryos to produce identical twins. Dr. Seidel was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Science in In the late 1990 s, his laboratory made sexing sperm by flow cytometry/cell sorting practical for artificial insemination. Current research includes in vitro oocyte maturation, fertilization, culture, and cryopreservation of embryos. Dr. Seidel and his wife Sarah also own a registered Angus seedstock herd with around 350 mother cows. In collaboration with Colorado State University, their cattle have been on estrus synchronization experiments annually for years. Dr. Marc-André Sirard DMV PhD Centre de Recherche en Biologie de la Reproduction, Canadian Research Chair in reproduction Genomics, Laval University, Quebec After graduated studies at University Laval on in vitro fertilization to generate the first clinical method to produce test-tubes calves in 1985, he went for a post-doctoral training to the laboratory of Neal First in Wisconsin to study in vitro maturation of oocytes. He came back to Québec in 1987 and became an industrial chair professor in 1990.He founded the Centre de Recherche en Biologie de la Reproduction in 1995 which has grown to include more than 100 people today. He obtained a senior Canadian Research Chair in 2000 on genomics applied to reproduction and is leading an international effort to define the normal genomic program in early mammalian embryos which has become an NSERC strategic network in He has published over 285 scientific papers and has been invited to give over 75 invited lectures in international meetings. His current research activities are focus on the influence of the ovarian environment on oocyte quality in human and large animals. Dr. Rob Stables: Dr. Stables graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon in 1996 and immediately went into Embryo Transfer practice at Davis-Rairdan Embryo Transplants. In 2004 he went back into bovine practice by buying a mixed animal practice with his wife, Candy. He continued to do some ET work and in 2010 started a small donor centre in combination with a mobile ET unit called Bow Valley Genetics. Expansion rapidly ensued with the addition of semen collection in 2010 and an export approved semen centre in IVF in association with Boviteq was introduced in 2016 and now represents over 30% of total embryo production. In 2018 Westgen purchased a 50% stake in Bow Valley with plans for continued expansion and investment in beef and dairy cattle reproduction services. Dr. Angelika Stock Angelika Stock graduated as DVM at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Munich in She received her doctoral degree (corpus luteum function in cattle) in She continued to work at the bovine ambulatory clinic of the same faculty. She was then invited for a research project on corpus luteum function and early embryo development at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, USA, where she later finished a PhD in bovine and equine reproductive endocrinology, including embryo transfer studies in cattle. At the Faculty of veterinary medicine of the University of Montreal she pursued a residency in theriogenology and several years as a postdoctoral research fellow. She became board certified by the American College of Theriogenology. She is currently working as practitioner specialized in theriogenology for the bovine and canine species in the province of Quebec, Canada. Her main task in the bovine field is embryo collection and transfer, infertility cases and semen freezing. Dr. R (Vish) Vishwanath Vish graduated with a BSc and MSc from Hyderabad, India and a PhD in Veterinary Physiology from the University of Sydney, Australia. He then worked for many years with Livestock Improvement a leading artificial breeding organization in New Zealand as Senior Scientist, R&D Manager as well as National Operations Manager. Following this, he took on the role of managing large and diverse research teams for AgResearch, a National Agricultural Research Institute in New Zealand. Vish joined Sexing Technologies, USA in 2011 as the global head of Research & Development. He is also an Adjunct faculty member at the Dept of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology, Texas A&M University.
