2 Photo: Shannon de Vall and Dr. Shelley Spaner The gloves were on in the fight against prostate cancer February 2, A Gloves-On Gala for Men s Health raised $150,000 for Calgary s Prostate Cancer Centre (PCC), exceeding its audacious goal of $100,000. The Women for Men s Health initiative at PCC hosted the event in partnership with Hotel Arts, Brandsmith marketing company, Co-Chairs Bill Brooks, Dr. Shelley Spaner, and OneWest event planning. Mark Wilson, General Manager and Vice President of the Hotel Arts Group, described the evening as the premiere event of the season, at Hotel Arts. The inaugural event featured a live and silent auction, dancing, hors d oeuvres, libations and a live band. Attendees were invited to don their favorite gloves in an effort to give your man a hand, explains Shannon de Vall, Fund Development Specialist at the PCC, adding that the money raised will help thousands of men in Calgary. Our wait to see a urologist for prostate cancer diagnosis is less than two weeks, which is very good for the city, de Vall says, We also supply a lot of support for their families as well, which I think is a huge thing for men going through prostate cancer. The event is the brainchild of Dr. Shelley Spaner, PCC board member and Calgary Radiologist. 3 Photo: Ruhin Sachedina, Bret Hart, and Kevin Haslbeck From FortisAlberta GETTING HEALTHY FOR YOUR SWEET HART The third annual Bret Hitman Hart Men s Health Day at Calgary s Prostate Cancer Centre encouraged attendees to get healthy for their sweet-hart. On February 13, 2018, attendees were given the opportunity to meet the Hitman and have a picture taken with him and his title belt after visiting the health team for a free PSA blood test and blood pressure, blood sugar and waist circumference measurements. After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015, Bret has endeavored to spread the message that prostate cancer is treatable if detected early. Any kind of cancer is scary, and I m man enough to admit that I was pretty scared when I went through it, Bret explains. In 2017, Hart s older brother, Smith, passed away from prostate cancer. Hart explains that his brother was never tested for prostate cancer, and by the time he was diagnosed, it was too late. It is not that complicated. Just get your blood work done; it could save your life. Now that he is cancer free, Hart says that he is happy to give back to the local community. I m a proud Albertan and a proud Calgarian, and I m proud of this hospital and the people in it, he says. First time attendees, Ruhin Sachedina and Kevin Haslbeck, found the event very motivational considering what Hart has been through within the past few years. Even if he motivates just one person, that is one extra person that would not have come, says Sachedina. As long-time fans of the Hitman and sponsors of the Man Van program with their company, FortisAlberta, the duo were excited to take part in the event. 4 Photo: MANVAN volunteer host and MAN VAN nurse Calgary International Auto and Truck Show Since 2013, nearly 1,200 men have been tested at the MAN VANTM while visiting the Calgary International Auto and Truck Show. As one of the busiest and most successful MAN VAN clinics of the year, the show has allowed Calgary s Prostate Cancer Centre to expand its reach in the community. Long-time show-goer, Mike, first happened across the MAN VAN five years ago. One of my friends was taking a long time checking out a Mclaren MP4-12C and I was bored, he explains, So I went off and just happened to come across the MAN VAN and decided to go in and get it checked out. That decision led to an early prostate cancer diagnosis. Because it was caught early, Mike has now been cancer-free for the last three years. Mike now volunteers his time at Prostate Cancer Centre as a MAN VAN host and driver, as well as a Peer 2 Peer Group volunteer. He believes it makes a difference to the men coming into the Centre who may feel unsure. I m there to tell them that there is a point to getting checked out. Calgary s Prostate Cancer Centre has a great relationship with the automotive industry. Funding from the Calgary Motor Dealers Association s (CMDA) annual Vehicle and Violins Gala helped build the first MAN VAN in In 2017, the Centre was privileged to again be a recipient of the Gala, which raised over $120,000 for the MAN VAN program. In 2018, local automotive group, Kaizen, partnered with Prostate Cancer Centre to become a title sponsor of the Calgary MAN VAN. Kaizen Automotive Group owns and operates dealerships in the Calgary area and throughout the province, including Shaw GMC, CMP Automotive, Sunridge Nissan, Country Hills Hyundai, Strathmore Ford. Okotoks GM and Okotoks Nissan. Calgary s Prostate Cancer Centre is a not-for-profit organization and relies on funding from donors and local businesses to keep their programs running.
