1 SEPTEMBER 2015 MACKAY- WHITSUNDAY REGION MEN S SHED NEWSLETTER Healthy Aging It is n secret that men are mre likely t ignre their physical and mental wellbeing than wmen. Accrding t aging experts men tend t put ff regular check-ups, frget t take their medicatins, and are reluctant t exercise, eat a healthy diet, r engage in self-care. In cntrast t wmen, men seem t have a tugh it ut attitude t health and nly attend t prblems nce they becme very uncmfrtable r extremely ill. The benefits f physical activity (e.g., walking arund the blck r wrking in the shed), nutritius fd (think meat & 3 vege it desn t have t be fancy), and meditatin (g fishing!!) cannt be under-estimated. Attending t these three things can help reduce the negative impacts f aging such as heart disease and high bld pressure, as well as increasing strength and energy and help yu t sleep better and feel better. Caring fr yur mind and bdy is imprtant. Interesting Facts Banging yur head against a wall burns 150 calries an hur. The average heart beats 72 times a minute! That s arund 100,000 times a day, & 3,600,000 a year! Yu re mre likely t have a Heart attack n a Mnday than any ther day f the week. Yu cannt snre and dream at the same time. 3 MAKING YOUR MARK ON THE WORLD! Famus psychlgist Erik Eriksn utlined 8 stages f life frm birth t death. Each f these stages prvide us with tw distinct and alternate pathways t fllw n ur jurney thrugh the lifespan. Tday I wish t fcus a little n Eriksn s seventh stage f develpment, as it relates t Men s Sheds and the benefits these rganisatins prvide t thse in the middle and late stages f adulthd. Eriksn s seventh stage, Generativity versus Stagnancy, applies t hw individuals relate t the wrld arund them during middle adulthd (40-65 yrs). During this stage f ur life, Eriksn believes ur lives are marked by a need t nurture and create things that will utlast us. In middle adulthd, we aim t give back t sciety and derive feelings f success and happiness frm ding things that benefit future generatins. Generativity, refers t making yur mark n the wrld. This is achieved thrugh raising children / grandchildren, mentring yunger generatins, caring fr thers in ur cmmunity, and generally trying t make the wrld a better place. Stagnatin, refers t the failure r inability t cntribute. Individuals caught n the pathway f stagnatin ften feel discnnected r uninvlved with their cmmunity and with sciety as a whle. Sadly, thse wh d nt attain the skill f generativity feel unprductive and uninvlved in their wrld. Thankfully, ur lcal Men s Sheds prvide a place in which generativity can thrive. When middle adults are successful in this phase f their life jurney they feel prductive, wrthwhile, and invlved. They are cntributing t a better wrld by being actively engaged in their hme and cmmunity and as a result their verall wellbeing is enhanced.
