(There is a component for sports nutrition, also health and nutrition resources- also under the school tab there are new resources that can ordered including the new information for MyPlate) Also don t forget June is Dairy Month and it is a great time to promote Dairy products to all ages Listed below are a few of the different type of dairy related Workshop stations that we have presented over the years. Most of the activities can be presented in a minute format and volunteers or sr. 4-H members can take these resources and set up a station without a lot of supervision. - Dairy Trivia Think Your Drink! (Can be played and promoted using the quiz bowl theme format) - Dairy Jeopardy - see attached notes for this quick/easy game. - Activity: Calcium.It s in Your Bones ( and older activity that was used many years ago showing calcium in the body) - Cheese tasting using typical and unusual type of cheeses. (History, costorigin types and uses) 4-H members can guess the types rank taste preference, etc. - Rock/ Roll Ice Cream- Ice Cream in a bag/can. - Kathryn Carnes, C EA-FCS, Archer County

2 ROCK AND ROLL ICE CREAM This recipe is enough for one person, so each can make their own. ½ cup milk ½ tsp. vanilla 1 tablespoon sugar 4 cups ice 4 tablespoons salt 2 qt. size Zip-loc bags 1 gallon size freezer bag A hand towel or gloves to keep fingers form freezing as well! Mix the milk, vanilla and sugar together in one of the quart size bags. Seal tightly, allowing little air to remain in the bag as possible. Place this bag inside the other quart size bag, and sealing well. By double bagging, the risk of salt and ice leaking into the ice cream is minimized. Put the two bags inside the gallon size bag and fill the bag with ice, then sprinkle salt on top. Escape air and seal the bag. Wrap the bag in a towel or put gloves on, shake and massage the bag, making sure the ice surrounds the cream mixture. 5-8 minutes is usually adequate time for the mixture to freeze into ice cream. Tips: Freezer bags work best because they are thicker and will not leak as easy. An alternative to the baggie method is to use coffee cans. Put the mixture in a standard size coffee can and seal with the plastic lid, then place in the larger economy size can several servings can be place in one can. Place the large can with ice and salt and seal with the lid. Kids can roll the can back and forth until the ice cream has set. The time required will depend on how many number of servings in the can. Who invented ice cream? Legend has it that the Roman emperor, Nero, discovered ice cream. Runners brought snow from the mountains to make the first ice cream. In 1846 Nancy Johnson invented the handcranked ice cream churn and ice cream surged in popularity. In 1904 ice cream cones were invented at the St. Louis World Expo. An ice cream vendor ran out of dishes and improvised by rolling up some waffles to make cones. ---This can be used to teach measuring, chemistry of ice and salt mixed together in melting, history of dairy or ice cream products. Simple ingredients/very low cost.

3 ACTIVITY: CALCIUM It s in Your Bones What to learn: Healthy growing bones need increasing amounts of calcium. Materials needed: 10-pound bag of flour Index cards/ labels Resealable type of plastic bags or clear containers Measuring cups ( dry ingredients /spoons) Procedure: Have volunteers measure out flour in the following manner and place in approximately sized resealable bags/containers: ( Make labels to represent this information) AMOUNT OF FLOUR: ¼ cup REPRESENTS CALCIUM IN BONES OF: newborn baby 3 ½ cups 10 year old 7 cups 15 year old 11 cups adult 6 ½ cups person with osteoporosis ************************************************************************************************ Explain the flour in these bags represent the amount of calcium in our bones at different ages. At the event if available you can even us a 10 year old to represent and hold one of the bags, a 15 year old to old another, an adult another to actually show how much calcium is needed. Or you can play a game and have youth guess and place what bag goes with which age group. Or you can just make an exhibit out of it and place index card/labels displaying the calcium represented if you need a simple dairy /calcium display. Discussion: Ask the youth to estimate with their hands the average size of a newborn baby. We were all born with about ¼ cup of calcium in our bones. Explain as we grow and bones lengthen, we are adding more and more calcium to them. Getting extra calcium in childhood and the teen years can mean even stronger bones. How much calcium is in your bones as a child compared with en you were born? Threeand- one- fourth more cups that is 14 times more than when you were born! How do you build up calcium in your bones to make them strong. Make sure to mention to get recommended servings of dairy products. ( From the new MyPlate site- Key Consumer Message) Consumers--- Look for and Switch to fat-free or low fat (1%) dairy products.

Answer Vanilla is 1 st, Chocolate is 2 nd 2. What beverage has more sugar chocolate milk or cola? Answer: Cola 3. How much milk is considered a serving? Answer: 8 oz. 4. How many cups of broccoli would you need to eat to equal the calcium in one cup of milk? Answer: It would take 3 to 3 ½ cups of broccoli ( approx. 7 servings or 1 package of frozen broccoli) to equal the calcium in one cup of milk. 5. What is the number 1 cheese eaten in the US? Answer: Cheddar hold a 34% market share. Mozzarella is a close second with 31%. 6. How many pounds of milk does a gallon of milk weigh? Answer: 8.5 pounds 7. How many pounds of milk does it take to make one pound of cheese? Answer: 10 pounds 8. Does chocolate milk contain the same kinds of essential nutrients as white milk? True or False/ Answer: True 9. Americans eat on average how many pounds of cheese per year? Answer: Americans consumer just over 30 pounds of cheese per person in 2000, more than doubling consumption in 25 years. 10. Which 1 st lady created a sensation by serving ice cream as a dessert at an inaugural ball? Answer: Dolly Madison at the 2 nd inaugural ball in This was just a sample ---by checking the website: you can create your own interesting trivia game.

5 HOW TO PLAY DAIRY JEOPARDY Preparations: On a Dry Erase board, poster board, or computer, draw out a game board with 18 boxes, laid out in three columns of six boxes or create more or less categories to fit your game and time frame. Many times this can be set up on the computer. Across the top three category boxes, In the remaining boexes fill in the point values starting with 100 points and continuing down to 500 points. Select a moderator to read the question and determine if answers are correct. To Play: Divide the group into team of equal size. Draw straws or flip coins to determine starting order. Have the first team pick a category and point value. Read the question, giving the team a set length of time to arrive at an answer. If the answer if correct the team receives that number of points and the turn falls to the next team. So all get to play---adapt and adopt rules to fit the situation, but make it fun for all.
