Kline, MD Chairman and Baylor College of Medicine Physician-in-Chief Texas Children s Hospital The purpose of the activity is to provide to an audience of physicians, who deliver primary pediatric care, current updated information relevant to the clinical approach, diagnosis, and management of health-related problems common to childhood and/or adolescence. TARGET AUDIENCE Pediatricians, Family Physicians, and General Practitioners Siripoom V. McKay Assistant Section of Endocrinology and Metabolism Christopher Oermann, MD Assistant Section of Pulmonology Section of Orthopedic Surgery Section of Retrovirology Associate Professor of Ophthalmology Assistant Academic Ambulatory Section activity directors and planning committee Armando Correa, MD n Jan E. Drutz, MD n OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to: Perform a physical examination and order appropriate diagnostic tests for early detection of hip dysplasia in the infant. Determine what thyroid function tests should be performed for infants and children and correctly interpret the results. Differentiate between children presenting with a sore throat and from those displaying the physical signs and symptoms consistent with group A β-hemolytic streptococcal infection and determine when to initiate confirmatory testing followed by appropriate antimicrobial therapy, as indicated. Institute the current immunization guidelines for children and adolescents and advise caregivers regarding the possible effect of fever/pain relievers on the immune response. Use an ELISA test to screen pediatric patients for TB when indicated. Identify and appropriately treat/monitor infants with hyperbilirubinemia. Screen pediatric patients who present with chronic abdominal pain for celiac disease and order appropriate diagnostic tests when indicated. Identify when significant traumatic ocular injury has occurred and respond appropriately. Evaluate patients presenting with precocious puberty and determine when additional studies are required to determine cause. Identify the possible causes of chronic cough in the pediatric patient and manage appropriately. EDUCATIONAL METHODS Lectures n Case Presentations n Syllabus n Question and Answer Sessions
5 EVALUATION Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias. ACCREDITATION/credit DESIGNATION Baylor College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Baylor College of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 18.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Cancellations are subject to a $50 administrative fee deducted from the registration fee paid to cover guarantees and other expenses. Requests should be mailed to the OCME or faxed to The OCME reserves the right to cancel activities, not less than 10 business days before the scheduled date, if extenuating circumstances make it necessary. Registrants will be notified at the contact number indicated on the registration form followed by written notification. If an activity is cancelled, OCME s liability is limited to the registration fee paid. Note: If payment is made by check, a social security number is required to process the refund. Faculty, topics, program schedule, and credit are subject to change. Audio or videotaping is prohibited without written permission from the Activity Director and the OCME, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.

The OCME reserves the right to limit the number of participants in an activity and will not be responsible for any expenses incurred by an individual whose registration is not confirmed and for whom space is not available.
