Conference goals Effective, comprehensive, up to date Sports and Orthopedic Medicine is an important patient care goal for which competence needs to be demonstrated. The 22 nd Annual Sports & Orthopedic Medicine Conference is designed to enhance the competence of healthcare professionals who treat patients with sports and orthorelated dysfunction. Current scientific research, best-practices, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in several areas of Sports and Orthopedic Medicine will be presented. The latest developments in diagnosis and treatment and translating those developments into useful clinical knowledge, will also be explored through didactic lectures. After completion of this course the participants will be familiar with the management of Sports and Orthopedic Medicine health conditions. Accreditation: Accreditation with Commendation This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of Swedish Medical Center and Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Swedish Medical Center is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. AMA PRA Category 1 Credits Swedish Medical Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 14.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). 4 Agenda Day One Thursday, January 21, :00-8:00pm Dinner Presentation Military Sports Medicine: Warrior Athletes Competing Around the World (REGISTRATION REQUIRED) Objectives: Describe the rich opportunities to practice Sports Medicine while serving our country s servicemen and women; apply principals of Primary Care Sports Medicine to elite athletes in austere conditions with limited resources; and endorse the concept of sports as a tool to foster international friendship and facilitate individual healing. Day Two Friday, January 22, :00-9:00am 3 Myths of the Glycemic Index Susan M Kleiner, PhD RD CNS FACN FISSN Objectives: Examine assumptions regarding the Glycemic Index; debunk the notion that high glycemic index food translate to rapid absorption of carbohydrate and low glycemic index foods translate to slow absorption of carbohydrates; and resolve understanding of the role of types of carbohydrates for health promotion, exercise fueling and research methods that should be expected by consumers to demonstrate marketing claims. 9:00-10:00am Addressing Neuroautonomic Influences Over Musculoskeletal System: A Unique & Effective Approach in Patient Management of the Naturally Asymmetrical Human Body Objectives: Identify the asymmetrical structure and function of the human body; describe how the asymmetrical human body can create predictable patterns of movement dysfunction and biomechanical adaptation; and recognize the importance of recovery and how respiration can help balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. 10:00am-4:15pm Break/Visit Exhibitors 4:15-4:30pm Snack Break/Network/Visit Exhibitors 4:30-5:30pm Pro-Inflammatory Therapies in Sports Medicine Objectives: Define and list pro-inflammatory therapies used in modern medicine; describe pro-inflammatory applications that have research evidence of efficacy, those that don t, and discuss the level of evidence for each; and illustrate examples of techniques, supplies and equipment used to deliver pro-inflammatory therapies. 5:30-6:30pm Sexy vs. Non-sexy Sports Injuries (aka Overuse Syndromes): The Middle Child of Sports Injuries Objectives: Identify cause and effect relationships of potential common sports and movement dysfunction injuries; identify and perform additional objective assessments that could be performed in the office to determine a potential underlying cause that needs addressing; and recall samples of treatment interventions that physical therapists often use to address the issues. 7:00-8:00pm Fireside Chat with Betsy Experiences and Logistics of Domestic & International Travel with the US Ski Team (REGISTRATION REQUIRED) Objectives: Recall the mechanisms of getting involved with providing medical care for the US Ski Team on a domestic and international level; differentiate between the levels of competition of alpine ski racing; and outline the duties and responsibilities as well as challenges and benefits of traveling with the best ski athletes in the world.
5 Day Three Saturday, January 23, :00-9:00am Benefits of Sports Ultrasound in Musculoskeletal Injections Objectives: Explain features of bedside sports ultrasound that enhance the capabilities of primary care providers; describe common injections that can be more accurate and effective with the use of sports ultrasound and uncommon injections that can be performed only with the assistance of sports ultrasound; and describe the medical evidence related to ultrasound guided musculoskeletal injections. 9:00-10:00am Return to Play Cora Breuner, MD MPH FAAP Objectives: Review concussion guidelines; plan return to play guidelines for the young athlete with sports injury; and execute return to play for the athlete with concussion. 10:00am-4:15pm Break/Visit Exhibitors 4:15-4:30pm Snack Break/Network/Visit Exhibitors 4:30-5:30pm Review of Spine Imaging Dawn Hastreiter, MD PhD Objectives: Review pathology being assessed on different modalities of spine imaging and its clinical relevance; demonstrate terminology and typical grading of MRI spine pathology; and illustrate state-of-the-art spine imaging, particularly for evaluation of pars stress injury. 5:30-6:30pm Pediatric and Adolescent Fractures: What s New, What s Old, What s Still Scary Mark Dales, MD Objectives: Define the changing referral and management patterns in pediatric fracture care; recognize which pediatric fractures they need to get out of bed for; and identify when old school is still appropriate.
