2 Philosophy This symposium follows the Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region s (EFCR) tradition since 1982 of offering professional symposia for the medical community. This symposium will appeal to the specialist who is addressing what is relevant and current in the field of epilepsy, as well as what is on the horizon. In accordance with EFCR s philosophy, both medical management of seizure disorders and the assistance of social integration of persons with epilepsy in the community will be discussed. Overview An Update on Brain Injury and Epilepsy is jointly sponsored by and the Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region, partnering with Johns Hopkins Medicine, the University of Maryland Medical Center, The Department of Veterans Affairs, Epilepsy Center of Excellence, and The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute. This symposium will appeal to specialists and is designed for neurologists, pediatricians, practitioners, internists, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other allied healthcare professionals who care for patients with epilepsy. With increases in sports/combat concussion injury and the resultant sequelae, including epilepsy, this symposium is designed to educate professionals in the field regarding the possible associations between concussion/head injury and epilepsy. Advances in neuroimaging have enhanced the accurate diagnosis and management of patients with acquired epilepsy, such as that suffered by patients with traumatic brain injury. This educational program will review both common and novel noninvasive radiographic techniques that are utilized in the evaluation of patients with brain injury and epilepsy. In addition, the treatment and management of patients with post-traumatic epilepsy have been very challenging, given the diffuse nature of the injury. Professionals in the field will benefit from an educational session that discusses novel approaches that attempt to mitigate the development of epileptogenicity in traumatic brain injury. Along with medical treatment, people living with epilepsy may need community support. Increased awareness of the services offered by community agencies can help professionals in the field to direct their patients to appropriate support for a greater quality of life. Target Audience Primary care physicians, pediatricians, neurologists, nursing professionals, neuropsychologists, social workers, and electrodiagnostic technicians. Objectives Upon completion of this symposium, attendees should be able to: Describe expert perspectives on the incidence and impact of brain injury and epilepsy in athletics and in combat. Discuss the common and novel noninvasive radiographic techniques utilized in the pre-surgical evaluation of pediatric and adult patients with epilepsy. Discuss the most current data concerning neurocognitive changes secondary to concussion and epilepsy. Outline the science, mechanisms, chronic effects, and management of traumatic brain injury and epilepsy. List the services offered by the Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region and other community resources.
