2 About the Conference About the Conference The Format The Content This conference provides access to two days of educational programming. Additionally, the FPTA will be hosting exhibits, which take place with an opening reception on Friday, March 19th followed by a breakfast on Saturday morning, March 20th. Exhibits will remain open until 11:00 am. This is your opportunity to see all of the newest products for improving patient care. This year s conference is filled with topics that will fit all of your needs. Some of the topics to be presented are: Revised Core Ethics Documents, CIMT, Current Evidence in Exercise Assessment, just to name a few. This conference is an excellent opportunity for participants to continue to broaden their continuing education. 3 Course Descriptions Friday, March 19, :00 4:00 pm 4.5 CEH s Creative Implementation of Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) Everything You Need to Translate from Research to Clinic This course will be given in a 2 part series. Upon completion of Part I, course participants will be able to: Discuss evidence related to the potential for neuroplasticity related to CIMT; Identify potential patients who may benefit from CIMT: primarily adults with stroke, with other brief references to pediatrics, I-SCI,TBI; List the key components of CIMT and how to incorporate into rehabilitation, and understand and demonstrate how to measure clinical outcomes. Presenter: Sandra Davis, PT 12:00 4:00 pm 4.5 CEH s The Revised Core Ethics Documents, Putting Ethics into Action for Practice, Leadership, and Mentoring The House of Delegates of the American Physical Therapy Association has approved major changes in the Code of Ethics (Code) and Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant (Standards) which become effective July 1, One important feature of the revised documents is that they provide more detailed guidance about the ethical obligations of physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in the individual, organizational, and societal realms of action. The first part of this course describes the process of revision, major changes in format and obligations, and content of the revised Code and Standards. In the second part of the course, the speakers explore the ethical dimensions of leadership and clinical practice and ways to put ethics into action with an emphasis on mentoring for moral practice and moral agency. Presenters: Laura Lee (Dolly) Swisher, PT, PhD Bruce Anderson, PT, Chief Delegate, FPTA Board of Directors APTA Ethics and Judicial Committee Michelle Guevin, PT, MHSc, MTC, FPTA Chapter Ethics Committee Chair Saturday, March 20, :30 5:00 pm 8 CEH s Current Evidence in the Application of Exercise Assessment/Intervention for the Physical Therapist The APTA s Vision Statement for 2020 states that by 2020 physical therapists will be autonomous practitioners providing management, prevention, and wellness services for patients/ clients in all settings. For this goal to become reality, physical therapists must provide comprehensive, evidence-based, care for all patients/ clients regardless of their primary diagnosis. This course will focus on the physical therapists expanding role in exercise testing as a method to examine and evaluate the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems in patients across the lifespan. Participants will learn about and participate in all aspects of aerobic and muscular exercise tests, and will learn how to prescribe appropriate exercise based on the results of testing and evaluation. In addition, participants will learn about pre-participation screening and appropriate monitoring during exercise testing. This course is appropriate for physical therapists practicing in orthopedic, neuromuscular, and cardiopulmonary environments, as well as, school and group fitness settings. 4 Course Descriptions 8:30 12:00 pm 3.5 CEH s Walking Recovery after SCI and CVA This course will focus on the anatomic and biomechanical underpinnings of walking recovery in stroke and spinal cord injury with a focus on the mechanisms of recovery of functional performance. Integral to this discussion is understanding the difference between compensatory approaches to improved function versus restoration of pre-morbid walking patterns and activity levels. This discussion will include neurological and biomechanical adaptations to improved walking performance. The course will conclude with a review of the evidence-based approaches to walking recovery and examine the level of evidence for differing approaches. The discussion will highlight the state of evidence for locomotor training incorporating body weight support and walking on a treadmill, both with manual and robotic assistance. Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to: Discuss the neurological and biomechanical bases for walking recovery in spinal cord injury and stroke. Apply the principles of training for walking recovery as founded in the animal literature and translated into human studies. Utilize principles of recovery and compensation in differing approaches to locomotor rehabilitation and discuss the principles in the context of clinical decision making. Discuss the best available evidence for walking rehabilitation programs for individuals with spinal cord injury and stroke. Analyze the gaps between evidence and implementation. Discuss ways to translate best practice models into clinical rehabilitation. Presenter: Mark Bowden, PhD, PT 8:30 5:00 pm 8 CEHs The Lumbar Spine : An Evidence Based Approach to Success Evaluation and Treatment The course will demonstrate evaluation techniques for the thoraco-lumbar spine, sacral-iliac joint, and the lower extremity. Further, specific patient presentations will be discussed; soft tissue mobilization, joint manipulation, and exercise progressions will be demonstrated respective to each patient presentation. After completion of the course, participants will be able to: describe the flow of procedures for a Cervical Evaluation, including the lumbar spine and the sacral-iliac joint; perform mobility testing from the thoraco-lumbar junction to the SI joint; perform soft tissue mobilization to the lumbar spine and lower extremity; perform thrust and non thrust manipulation to the lumbar spine, SI joint, and hip joint; Describe the basic tenets of M.E.T./S.T.E.P., develop specific plans of care utilizing S.T.E.P. principles for thoraco-lumbar spine and related SI pathologies. 5 Course Descriptions Course participants will be able to: Describe learned non-use, neuroplasticity and CIMT to a patient and family/caregivers; Incorporate aspects of recovery, posture & body mechanics into CIMT; Implement a 2-6 hour schedule of task practice and shaping progression in acute, subacute and chronic scenarios; Choose appropriate CIMT activities for each unique patient based on levels of impairment and participation; Develop & revise the Translation Package including: contracts, mitt compliance, diary, home program, safety and maintenance of therapeutic gains ; and Review cases for performance improvement after actual implementation in a lab situation with volunteers post-stroke.
