3 He Fell : Establishing The Authr s Credibility Discussin Wrap-Up: Lessn Plan Bk: Breaking Her Fall Lessn Type: Narrative & POV, Clse Text analysis Nw that the students have had the pprtunity t frm their wn pinins abut Tucker Jnes and his narrative credibility, prject this excerpt frm an interview that Stephen Gdwin did fr Harcurt Bks: Q: Tucker is distressed by the injury caused by his cnfrntatin with the by, Jed Vandenberg, and he feels badly fr him, but he never feels respnsible fr causing the injury even thugh he was brandishing a shvel at the time it ccurred. What are yur thughts n this? A: I think Tucker des feel respnsible. He certainly feels enrmus guilt. He knws that he behaved impulsively and recklessly. Partly because there s a legal threat hanging ver him, and partly because he just desn t knw exactly what pssessed him, he keeps insisting that he didn t hit Jed and that s true. I saw Tucker as a man clinging t this fact, this technical truth, almst the way a child hangs n t a security blanket. It desn t really prtect him, but he can t d withut it. He s trying t keep his remrse frm destrying him. Ask the students whether they view Tucker the same way Gdwin des. Have the students discuss r jt dwn hw their pinins either cmplement r differ frm the authr s, citing examples frm the text r class discussin that supprt their view f Tucker r Gdwin s view f Tucker. Writing Activities/Evaluatins: Analytical: Give an example f anther text (r mvie, TV shw, play, etc.) where the narratr is either reliable r unreliable. Explain why the narratr can be cnsidered as such and cmpare/cntrast that narratr with Tucker t explain their impressins f his narratin. Creative: Pick a passage lcated in the first three chapters f Breaking Her Fall that interest yu. Rewrite it as if it was cming frm a character in the nvel wh culd have been a reliable narratr. Hw des the POV change? What did yu have t alter abut the dictin, syntax, etc. t achieve a reliable quality t the narrative? Fter-Title Field (duble-click t edit): Lessn Plan 3

Why r why nt? What are sme f the subplts develping in the first three chapters? What d yu fresee happening in the next few chapters? Hw d yu think Kat viewed her relatinship with her father befre the incident? What clues des the text prvide? Hw d yu think Kat feels after the incident? Supprt yur answer with textual reference D yu think Tucker recgnizes his actual guilt in the suit against him, r d yu think he truly believes Jed fell did nt prvke him? D yu think that Tucker deserves t g t jail fr what he did t Jed? Why r why nt? Fter-Title Field (duble-click t edit): Discussin & Cmprehensin Questins 4
