2 clinical update in GERIATRIC MEDICINE Introduction As our population continues to age, we are facing a tidal wave of older persons in our offices, hospitals, and nursing homes. The fastest growing segment of the population are those above the age of 85 years. This conference is designed to provide both a pragmatic and an evidencebased approach to help clinicians provide superb care to these often frail individuals. Some Highlights Include: This course provides a collaborative effort of: Aging Institute and Palliative & Supportive Institute Forbes Regional Hospital, West Penn Allegheny Health System Golden Living Centers Evidence-based Lectures on the common geriatric syndromes including delirium, dementia, depression, and osteoporosis, pain, and insomnia. A Symposium on Common Neurological Disorders afflicting the older population, with a key note address focusing on the neurological exam by Dr. Martin Samuels, an internationally recognized expert in the field of Neurology. Heritage Valley Health System / Sewickley Valley Hospital Breakouts on a wide variety of geriatric diseases and issues. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC UPMC Health Plan UPMC McKeesport UPMC St. Margaret UPMC Shadyside Washington Hospital Ask the Expert Sessions where participants can ask specific questions about problems encountered in their practice to experts in Rheumatology, Endocrinology, and Infectious Disease. Dinner Symposium: The Healthy Brain Aging presented by Kirk Erickson, PhD, whose interests range from cognitive neuroscience, aging, neuroplasticity, genetics, and molecular mechanisms of cognitive function. He is currently the Principal Investigator of the BACH Lab at the University of Pittsburgh and is continuing his research on how the brain changes in late adulthood and the factors that promote successful aging. 3 Learning Objectives At the end of this course, participants should be able to: Better understand why care in the elderly should differ from that in younger persons, and why the presentation of disease in the elderly is often atypical. Apply a geriatric approach to common syndromes including dementia, depression, delirium and osteoporosis. Assess and manage neurological disease in the elderly, including Parkinson s disease, stroke and perform an appropriate neurological exam in an older person. Who Should Attend This course is designed for family practitioners, internists, geriatricians, and other health care professionals who provide care to older adults. Previous attendees will also be interested because of the conference s continually changing topics, speakers and approach. Continuing Education Credit Types of credit: CME, AAFP, Nursing and ACPE = Topics that meet Patient Safety/ Risk Management criteria are noted throughout the schedule = Topics that are receiving pharmacy credit CME This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the Pennsylvania Geriatrics Society Western Division. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 20.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Each physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Other health care professionals are awarded 2.0 continuing education units (CEU s) which are equal to 20.0 contact hours. A maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits or.10 CEUs will be awarded for attendance at the dinner presentation. Nursing The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine s Center for Continuing Education in the Health Science and School of Nursing are collaborating in the development of this educational activity. Nurse participants successfully completing this learning activity (attending the full session, completing and submitting a program evaluation and a CE verification form) may receive up to a maximum of contact hours. The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. ACPE This program is sponsored by the UPMC Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences. The UPMC Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a Provider of continuing pharmacy education. The assigned universal program number is: L04-P. The maximum amount of continuing education credit that can be granted for this program is contact hours. Expert clinicians and experienced members of the HELP sites will share evidenced-based information and clinical insights on selected topics regarding the influence of HELP, delirium updates, and the larger policy implications of care for the elderly. Updates on collaborative papers, expansion of the program and innovative site projects will also be presented.
