2 CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION: This conference will offer an opportunity for recreational therapy professionals, students and educators, and other human service providers to enhance skills and knowledge and develop competencies in successful treatment interventions while exploring other service delivery options. OBJECTIVES: Enhance knowledge of and develop skills in therapeutic interventions used in the delivery of recreational therapy services. Increase understanding of current professional issues related to the delivery of recreational therapy services. Increase networking and collaboration among recreational therapy professionals, students, educators, and professionals in other disciplines. A brochure of approved CEU sessions will be ed to conference registrants prior to the conference. Information listed on initial brochure is subject to change. 3 CONFERENCE FEES: Membership Level Before Feb 12th After Feb 12th or On-Site Professional Rates $42 $45 Student Rates $22 $25 CONTINUING EDUCATION FORMS: CEU Forms (Professionals Only) $22.00 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) pre-approval is in process. ATRA and NCTRC cannot guarantee that every session offered for this continuing education opportunity will be granted CEUs. CEU s are calculated at 1.0 CEU = 10 contact hours. CEUs cannot be awarded to participants who arrive more than 15 minutes late to a session or miss more than 15 minutes during a session; missing one or the other will result in the removal of credits for the session. Please ensure that you have signed in at the beginning of each session and have the CEU form punched at the end of each session to receive credit for the session. Before leaving the conference the CEU sheet must be submitted, by the conference attendee, to the conference registration table and signed by conference officials. Please keep the CEU receipt for your records. Within 30 days following the conference the CEUs Attendance will be verified and then sent to ATRA. After 30 days, all CEU information will be sent to ATRA for processing. Contact ATRA CEU-online if you do not receive your transcripts within 6 weeks. 6 CEU Session #1-Keynote: Becoming a Difference Maker (0.15 CEU s) Presenter: Chad Porter Full Conference Schedule This session is motivational in nature and reflects that no one person s situation or experience is the same. Chad Porter experienced an accident as a young man and it has taught him how to become a difference maker and the importance of perseverance. His mission is to change lives and if that means one at a time, he is fully committed to the journey and will never take that responsibility lightly. He believes that we all have our own unique ability to make a difference in the world but it all starts with you first. CEU Session #2: Using Facility/Therapy Dogs in Recreation Therapy (0.15 CEU s) Presenter: Kyria Henry, MAHS This session will define facility dog/animal certification requirements, how therapy dogs play a role in the practice of recreation therapy, and will give an overview of the Paws4people program. CEU Session #3: How Can I Avoid Errors in my RT License Application? Student Track- No CEU s Available Presenter: Becky Garrett, MS, LRT/CTRS This session gives an overview of what forms and additional required documents are needed to obtain your license as quickly as possible. Learn how to use the NCBRTL online application process. CEU Session #4: Application of the APIE Process with Adaptive Paddling Ventures for Varying Diagnostic Groups (0.15 CEU s) Presenters: Alex Jones, Brittany Livengood & Brook Smith This session will detail our learning experiences during the American Canoe Association s Adaptive Paddling Workshop, and how the process of equipment modification meets the needs of a client and how it aligns with the APIE process. CEU Session #5: PART I- Dementia Practice Guidelines for Recreational Therapy and Allied Health Professionals: Treatment of Disturbing Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (0.15 CEU s) This session is divided into 4 parts, you must attend all of the sessions to receive the CEU credit Presenters: Suzanne Fitzsimmons, geriatric nurse practitioner and recreational therapist and Angie Sardina, gerontologist and LRT/CTRS Working as an allied health professional with individuals who have dementia can be challenging, especially when behavioral challenges are present. This intensive workshop will provide the allied health professional with extensive training in using the Dementia Practice Guidelines. After completion of the Dementia Practice Guidelines course, you will receive a Certificate of Training as a dementia specialist. This evidence-based guideline and training will improve 6
7 individual skills in management of disturbing behaviors and enhance the services and quality of life of persons with dementia. Programs will be covered of fitness, Miracle League baseball, and adapted sports. CEU Session #7: PART I- Mindfulness: An Evidence Informed Practice for Recreation Therapy (0.15 CEU s) This session is divided into 2 parts, you must attend both of the sessions to receive the CEU credit Presenters: Cara Gray, Ph.D., LRT/CTRS and Jacquelyn Lee, Ph.D., LCSW This session will provide an understanding of mindfulness as a treatment intervention in Recreation Therapy. Topics will include theories, evidence based practice, measurement, and intervention strategies. Populations to be addressed include psychotic disorders, eating disorders, geriatric psychiatry, crisis stabilization, perinatal, child and adolescent psychiatry. 7

This will be an overview of how these changes have affected NC RT Board and occupational licensing. CEU Session #14: Case Study Competition (no CEU s available) Presenter: Students from RT Programs across the state UNCW is hosting the first SPIF Student Case Study Competition. Each university and college with a RT/TR program was eligible to submit up to two teams made up 8
9 of three students per team to the competition. Each team will be given 5-10 minutes to present the solution to their case with supporting evidence to a panel of judge-practitioners and an audience of SPIF attendees. The winning team will receive $150, and their RT/TR program will receive a trophy and bragging rights for a year. CEU Session #15: Let s Talk About Internships (0.15 CEU s) Presenter: Candace Ashton Forrester, Ph.D, LRT/CTRS In this interactive session, RT faculty, practitioners, and students will learn from each other (a) best practices in RT internships that meet accreditation standards, (b) qualities internship supervisors expect in outstanding applicants and interns, and (c) expectations and fears students have when applying for and engaging in their internship.
