1 The University of Iowa HAWKEYE MARCHING BAND July 2017 Summer Newsletter I hope this letter finds each of you enjoying a relaxing and rewarding summer. The first performance of the 2017 Hawkeye Marching Band is quickly approaching and the success of our performances begins with HMB camp! HMB camp gets underway on Monday, August 14, for the undergraduate staff, drumline, sousaphones, and all firstyear members. The rest of the HMB veteran members should report for their first rehearsal on Tuesday evening, August 15. A detailed camp schedule is enclosed please read and follow this information carefully! (Freshmen will attend both the HMB rehearsals and the On Iowa orientation events as listed in the enclosed, UI administrativelyapproved schedule.) You can find our semester rehearsal and performance schedule on our web site (URL below). All HMB members (including prospective drumline members) living in the UI Residence Halls must me by FRIDAY, AUGUST 4 (kevin-kastens@uiowa.edu) and include the following information: 1) your assigned res hall and room number 2) the day/date you plan to move-in, either Sunday, August 13 (first-year members, undergrad staff members, sousaphones, drumline, after 9AM) or Monday, August 14 (remaining HMB vets; Tuesday is possible, but you will be moving in with all of the incoming students this year) ** Freshmen ignore move-in date information listed in your On Iowa orientation information ** I will forward this information to Residence Services so your assigned room will be ready when you arrive. For those members living in the residence halls, University Bands will pay the residence hall costs (room and residence hall meals) until your residence hall contracts begin. This mailing has been sent to all first-year and veteran members who have stated their intention to participate in the Hawkeye Marching Band this fall. Please give me the courtesy of an to inform me if your plans have changed so that I can plan accordingly (accept another musician on the waiting list in your place, and design drill for accurate numbers/instrumentation). I look forward to working with each of you as we prepare for an exciting 2017 season in Kinnick Stadium! Please read all of this information carefully and completely; be sure to monitor account as more information will be sent to you prior to camp. Go Hawks!! 2 HMB instruments (mellophones, trombones, baritones, sousaphones) will be assigned to first-year members at their orientation meeting on Monday evening, August 14. Trombone players must provide their own instruments for rehearsal; game day trombones will be provided. Undergrad staff members can pickup their instruments on Monday afternoon, August 14 (1PM) prior to the start of your review session. Veteran mellophones and baritone members can check out their instrument on Tuesday evening, August 15, (6:15-6:30PM). Drumline equipment and sousaphones will be distributed during their first rehearsals on August 14. A valid University ID is needed for instrument checkout. The university instrument rental fee is $40 (for mellophones, trombones, baritones, sousaphones and drumline). All instruments personal and University instruments) will be stored at our HMB facility. It is always a good idea to verify that your personal instrument is covered (damage, theft, etc.) on your or your family's insurance policy. Be prepared for the hot and humid Iowa weather! If you are not spending too much time outdoors this summer, be sure to start conditioning yourself to the hot and humid weather by walking or exercising outdoors. Begin hydrating (water, Gatorade/Powerade) before you arrive at camp! As you are preparing for HMB camp, don t forget to pack the following items: sunscreen, lip balm, hat, sunglasses, water bottle, etc. Plan to wear loose and comfortable clothing and athletic shoes for our marching/drill rehearsals (no sandals or bare feet!). Each student is expected to provide a pair of black marching shoes to wear with our uniform. The style should be a plain-toe, tie shoe that can be shined. For your convenience, if you need them, black MTX marching shoes will be sold on Thursday morning during camp ($39, including tax; cash, check or credit card; no U-Bill). Brass players - keep up your chops! Everyone - be sure your instrument is in good working order. Each player (with the exception of piccolos and percussion) is required to provide a properly fitting music lyre for their instrument. Don t forget to stock up on accessories (reeds, valve oil, etc.) for the season. (FYI: HMB students receive a discount at West Music in Coralville; special Bach trumpet lyres are also available.) The HMB uniform fee remains $50, which will automatically be billed as a course fee by the University. All members will receive a pair of black gloves, stadium ball cap, and the new 2017 uniform t-shirt. First-year members will also receive the gold HMB polo shirt, spats, and a flip folio. Veteran members are reminded to bring their flip folios, gold polo shirts, and spats which were previously issued to you (new items can be purchased during camp week, if needed). Casual HMB Uniform: In anticipation of hot, humid weather for our first performance(s), please bring to campus a pair of khaki-colored (light tan) shorts which can be worn with the HMB gold polos. I prefer that the shorts come to just above the knee and are not frayed (avoid cargo-style shorts). Please bring athletic shoes to wear for that game that are primarily white or black in color. Obviously, we are going for a "uniform" look in school colors. Depending on the actual temperature/humidity forecast on game day, we may wear the shorts, gold polos, white athletic shoes and black ball caps as an alternative to our regular full uniform. Special events and announcements... If you have not already done so, please be sure you are enrolled in Hawkeye Marching Band, MUS:1165:0001 for 1 credit before the start of camp. No course conflicts are allowed on Fridays! Announced 2017 kickoff times are posted on our web site. Other kickoff times TBA, pending television contracts. We will travel to Ames September 9 for the Iowa Iowa State game. On occasion there are opportunities to volunteer to participate in a pep band activity for which you are paid. In order to be paid, the University requires that you complete an I-9 form. Kathy Ford in our band office can do this for you. However, you will need to bring in a current passport or original Social Security card (with valid drivers license) in order to process this form. If you think you may be interested in volunteering at some point during the semester, bring one of these items with you and see Kathy Ford at the start of the semester to become eligible for payment. (If you are currently employed by the University, you have already completed this form. Note that I-9 forms are only valid for three years.) Our four-, and five-year HMB members will be honored during the Purdue game on November 18. University of Iowa Bands, 93 E. Burlington Street, Iowa City, IA Phone: 319/
3 2017 Hawkeye Marching Band Schedule Regular Semester Rehearsals Attendance at all rehearsals is required. The Hawkeye Marching Band rehearses from 3:40-5:30PM Tuesday through Friday at the HMB rehearsal facility on the Hawkeye Campus. The practice facility is served by Cambus and has free parking available (vehicles must be registered with the University). Never assume a rehearsal is cancelled due to inclement weather, as we have the indoor rehearsal facility/iowa Turf Building option! (HMB rehearsals are rarely cancelled!) The Hawkeye Marching Band also has indoor music rehearsals on selected Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00PM. Music rehearsals will be held at the HMB indoor facility (Hawkeye Turf) on the Hawkeye Campus. Tuesday evening music rehearsal dates are August 29, September 5, September 19, September 26, October 10, and October 31. Current and updated rehearsal and performance information can always be found on the HMB web site: On the mornings of home football games, the Hawkeye Marching Band will rehearse in Kinnick Stadium at 7:00AM (based on a 11:00AM kickoff time; or later as announced, depending on the scheduled kickoff time). A game day itinerary will be ed to students during the week prior to each home game. If the Hawkeyes win the B1G West Division, we will rehearse on November 29 and 30. If the Hawkeyes are selected for a bowl game, we will have one rehearsal at the HMB practice facility on December 8 (3:40-5:30PM). ** All HMB members are expected to participate in the bowl trip if Iowa is selected to play in a post-season BOWL GAME! ** Scheduled NO REHEARSAL Days UI Bands encourages and promotes academic excellence. On occasion, our performance schedule will allow us to take some well-deserved time off. The Hawkeye Marching Band will not rehearse on the following Fridays: September 29, October 13, October 20, and November 10. HMB will not rehearse in the afternoons after Friday, November 17 (except for the possibility of B1G Championship and/or bowl game rehearsals). Enrollment Be sure you are enrolled in the course MUS:1165:0001 Hawkeye Marching Band by the start of HMB camp. Anyone not enrolled by HMB Camp week will remain on reserve status until they are enrolled. Any class conflicts must be reported to your TA during HMB Camp week. There can be no class conflicts on Fridays. Work is not an excused tardy, an excused absence, or a reason to leave early from a School of Music ensemble HMB Camp Schedule HMB Camp is required of all members. During these rehearsals fundamentals of marching and the first show s pregame and halftime musical selections will be taught. The pregame and first halftime show drills will also be introduced and taught during camp. All other veteran members should report for their first rehearsal on Tuesday evening, August 15. All HMB members living in the residence halls can move into their assigned rooms on Sunday, August 13 (first-year members, Undergrad Staff, Sousaphones, Drumline) or Monday, August 14 (other HMB veterans).
