Educational Objectives Upon completion of this conference, participants should be better able to: Examine the history of brain injury treatments and the evolution to current standards of care. Describe long-term psychosocial consequences of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in both children and adults. Examine the potential application of neuropsychological rehabilitative approaches for the treatment of children, considering approaches that have been successfully implemented for the treatment of adults. Identify the neuropsychological and psychiatric difficulties that should be the focus of neuropsychological rehabilitation in school-age children. Analyze current neuroimaging techniques used to evaluate patients with traumatic brain injury and explain their respective strengths and weaknesses. Recognize indications for the use of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in the assessment of TBI patients. Recognize PTSD as a comorbidity of mild TBI. Implement diagnostic criteria and assessment of PTSD and mild TBI. Examine current imaging techniques used to define the eloquent brain. Explain technical aspects of surgery of the eloquent cortex. Implement appropriate patient selection criteria for an awake-craniotomy. Explain the association between epilepsy and TBI. Recognize TBI cases that warrant utilization of prophylactic antiepileptic medication. Implement evidence-based recommendations for the management of acute and long-term post-trauma epilepsy. Identify sleep disorders associated with TBI and initiate appropriate sleep screening assessment. Implement the most appropriate treatment option for the sleep-disordered TBI patient and/or recognize indications that warrant referral to a sleep specialist. Recognize and evaluate current and new therapeutic strategies for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke management. Discuss implications of post-concussion symptoms with patients and families and initiate timely referrals to appropriate brain and spinal cord injury programs.
