2 Your communications toolkit Please use the enclosed communications toolkit to share important sight-saving information with patients, colleagues, family and friends during July Glaucoma Awareness Month. Together, let s get all New Zealanders to pay attention to glaucoma. Lighting up the facts on glaucoma: - 91,000 New Zealanders have glaucoma and only 50% of them know they have it - First degree relatives of a person with glaucoma have an almost 1 in 4 chance of developing glaucoma in their lifetime - There are no symptoms in the early stages - Blindness from glaucoma is preventable if detected early by having a full eye examination General Information on glaucoma Glaucoma is the name given to a group of related diseases where the optic nerve is being damaged. The nerve fibres progressively die, taking away the peripheral or side vision first. Therefore, visual loss goes undetected until it is quite advanced. Glaucoma is the number one cause of preventable blindness in New Zealand, and the second cause of preventable blindness in the world. About Glaucoma Annual Appeal Glaucoma NZ s July Awareness Appeal focuses on encouraging people to have their eyes examined, raises awareness of glaucoma, and generates valuable funds for our ongoing initiatives such as: - Public meetings nationwide - Community awareness meetings nationwide - Free glaucoma resources - Free newsletter to over 8000 members and their families Support Line - Support Groups Contents - Send an - Promote on your website - Share the message on social media - Posters for display - Media release template for local advertising For assistance in supporting Glaucoma New Zealand Awareness Month contact info@glaucoma.org.nz or call Thank you for your support!
