2 GREETINGS FROM THE BOARD OF ARCHWOOD 55 PLUS Wow! It is hard to believe that the summer is almost over and we are looking at returning to fall programming and full hours Monday to Friday 9:00 to 3:00 at Archwood 55 Plus. What s new for Fall 2018: A cardio-conditioning fitness class Monday with a new instructor; a second line dancing class on Tuesday; and Melt, an intro session of pain relief for hands and feet, similar to the Block Therapy but done in a chair. Mindfulness, which was added in the Spring, is running a two part session; not sure what it is or how it could benefit you try the one day retreat on Friday September 7th. Want to increase your technology skills, attend Friday afternoon sessions, with a beginner or intermediate user ability and also a specific ipad session. Have a question? , call or check our website for more information. ARCHWOOD 55 PLUS MEMBERSHIPS An Annual Fee of $25 entitles members to preferred rates on classes, trips, activities, luncheons and seminars. Meet our new facilitator Krista. Fall 2018 Fitness & Recreation Class Registration: 9:30 to Noon, Tues. Sept 4th, Wed., Sept 5th & Thurs., Sept 6th, 2018 on the 2nd Floor of Archwood Community Club Registration is in-person by the take a number system. We accept cash or cheque for payment. Class size is limited to a maximum number of participants. At that time a waitlist will be established. All fitness classes are led by certified instructors who are experienced working with older adults.. If a minimum number of participant is not met, a class or outing may be cancelled. Missed out on class registration? Please contact our office to see if there is space in the class you would like to join. We offer pro-rated registration to late registrants or part-time registrants. Drop-In Class Policy allows for participation in classes which are not at a maximum enrollment. A program registration sheet with contact information must be filled out prior to participating in a class. Costs for an hour long class: Members $7.00 and non members $10.00 (Note: no receipts are issued for drop-ins). 3 FITNESS & RECREATION CLASS SCHEDULE FALL SESSION SEPTEMBER TO DECEMBER 2018 YOGA FIT FLOW Monday 9:30am 10:30am 12 weeks Sept. 17th Dec. 10th (no class Oct. 8th) Instructor: Vivian Babij MAX: 18 participants For Older Adults who have been practicing yoga and would like a bit more challenge. The sessions focus on breathing and moving into yoga posture with correct alignment. These classes are great for improving balance and range of motion. You will leave the class energized with lifted spirits. CARDIO CONDITIONING Monday 9:45am 10:45am (gym) 13 weeks Sept. 10th Dec. 10th (no class Oct. 8th) Instructor: Charles Mrena MAX: 18 participants This class will keep your body moving and strong and is designed for those who want cardiovascular and strength benefits, but do not like the bounce of a traditional aerobics class. Enjoy a workout that includes Low-Impact movements & muscle conditioning exercises (using weights, bands and your own body weight). CHAIR YOGA MONDAY Monday 11:00am 12:00pm 12 weeks Sept. 17th Dec. 10th (no class Oct. 8th) Instructor: Vivian Babij MAX: 18 participants Chair Yoga is a gentle approach to yoga that emphasizes the importance of breathing, posture, stretching and balance. If you have challenges with balance or find it difficult to get down or up from the floor then this is the class for you. All poses and exercises are practised while sitting on a chair or while using the chair for balance. LINE DANCING TUESDAY Tuesday 11:00am 12:00pm 12 weeks Sept. 18th Dec. 4th Instructor: Anita Suen MAX: 18 participants Join us and learn different steps and sequences to popular music in a fun atmosphere. No dance experience necessary or partner required. FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT TUESDAY Tuesday 9:45am 10:45am (gym) 13 weeks Sept. 11th Dec. 4th Instructor: Andrew Schindle MAX: 24 participants Have fun with your peers while training your muscles to help you do everyday activities safely and efficiently. This workout includes exercises to improve stabilizing muscles, balance and stretching to increase mobility. TOTAL BODY WORKOUT Tuesday 9:30am 10:30am 12 weeks Sept. 18th Dec. 4th Instructor: Flery Blanco MAX: 18 participants This total body workout includes basic exercises that work the major muscles of the body, including the chest, back, shoulders, arms, legs and abs. It will help keep muscles and bones strong, reduce bone density loss and improve balance and posture. Soon you ll be looking and feeling better than ever! MINDFULNESS FOR DAILY LIVING Tuesday 1:30pm 3:00pm Instructor: Leanne Humphreys MAX: 18 participants Mindfulness is a topic that is gaining a lot of attention. Sessions are intended to provide an experiential way to answer the questions: What is Mindfulness? What are the benefits of Mindfulness? How are we already Mindful? During our 1.5 hour weekly sessions we will explore various mindfulness based meditations and practices; each week introducing a formal and non-formal practice that can be used anytime/anywhere. Sept. 11th Oct. 23rd: 7 weeks Exploration of Mindfulness including non-judgement, acceptance & trust Cost $50. ($70.00 non-members) Oct. 30th Dec. 4th: 6 weeks Continued exploration of compassion, forgiveness, gratitude and self-love. COST: $45 ($65.00 non-members)

LOW IMPACT CARDIO Thursday 11:00am 12:00pm (gym) 13 weeks Sept. 13th Dec. 6th Instructor: Cecile Dufresne MAX: 30 participants This class is an intermediate to advanced level, moderate to high intensity session for those with good mobility. Class starts with a warm-up, followed by a 20-minute cardio workout, then segments of muscle toning and concludes with a segment focused on stretching. ART Thursday 10:00am 12:00pm 13 weeks Sept. 13th Dec. 6th Instructor: Daria Mudryj MAX: 18 participants Art sessions are geared to beginner and experienced painters alike using watercolour and acrylics. If you have not painted before, you will learn many painting and drawing techniques. If you have some experience painting, this class will help generate ideas and inspire you to try new things. Bring your own art supplies and work on projects in the company of others. COST: $91 ($130 non-members) FRESH IDEAS WELCOME Have a talent or skill that you would like to share with other members? Participants are encouraged to bring their own fitness balls, but it is not a requirement. CHAIR YOGA FRIDAY Friday 11:00am 12:00pm 13 weeks Sept. 14th Dec. 7th Instructor: Brenda Moberg MAX: 18 participants This gentle yoga class includes relaxing stretches, Tai Chi deep breathing and meditation. Some standing with chair assist may be included for balance postures. Enjoy deep relaxation, improved flexibility and a calm sense of well-being. MINDFULNESS RETREAT Friday, September 7th, :30am 2:30pm Led by Leanne Humphreys at Archwood 55 Plus Join us for this 5 hour silent retreat. You will be led through a series of mindfulness exercises, guided meditations, mindful movement and chair yoga. We will also enjoy a mindful meal (while snacks will be provided, it is encouraged to bring your own lunch). $25 ($35 non-members) Contact the office for more information. 5 LEGAL CLINIC Starting October 3rd, 2018 FIRST Wednesday of the Month A lawyer will meet with individuals to prepare a will, power-of-attorney and/or health directive. The Legal Clinic will be held in the morning. Please contact the office to get more information; to determine costs or to pre-book your appointment. It is first come first served bookings. A pre-meeting appointment will be scheduled prior to your meeting with the lawyer to go over documents and/or information which may be needed by the lawyer in order to save time for you and the lawyer. An economical way to ensure your legal interests are covered. SPECIAL SESSIONS FALL SESSION SEPTEMBER TO DECEMBER 2018 MELT FOR HANDS & FEET Monday 11:00am 12:00pm 4 weeks Sept. 10th, 17th, 24th & Oct. 1st Instructor: Meghan Oliver MAX: 10 participants Erase pain and tension in your hands, feet, neck and lower back brought on by everyday stress, overuse and age. This simple self-treatment can make your whole body feel better and provide relief from neck and lower back pain, arthritis, bunions, plantar fasciitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. Classes will be done from a chair and are suitable for everyone. COST: $20 ($35 non-members) INTRO TO FITNESS Tuesday 11:00am 12:00pm (gym) 5 weeks Sept. 18th, 25th, Oct. 2nd, 9th & 16th Instructor: Andrew Schindle MAX: 8 participants Looking for a beginner fitness program? If your physical limitations have you struggling to return to a regular exercise program, then this class if for YOU! Enjoy a class that is tailored to your needs and physician s recommendations. Learn to gain mobility to return to everyday activities in a small class with our expert instructor who will give you the confidence to get ACTIVE. COST: $25 ($27.50 non-members) BLOCK THERAPY Wednesday 9:30am 10:30am 4 weeks Oct. 10th, 24th, 31st & Nov. 7th Instructor: Joanne Holt MAX: 16 participants Block Therapy is a revolutionary form of body work that utilizes a therapeutic tool made of cedar to release compressed tissue and increase blood flow and oxygen into the body. The end results for you is better overall health and wellness. The blocks will be supplied for all classes. Anyone that can get down to the floor can do Block Therapy. It is a pain management program that has many additional benefits to the body. COST: $20 ($35 non-members) PAINT & PLAY CLASSES Thurs, Oct. 18th and/or Friday Nov. 2nd 12:30pm 3:00pm Instructor: Linda Olzewski MAX: 10 participants Take one or both of these classes which will introduce you to basic painting techniques. Linda will lead you step by step to produce your own masterpiece in an afternoon. All materials including canvas, brushes and paint will be provided. Bring an apron (or clothes to paint in). COST: $25 ($27.50 non-members) MONTHLY LUNCHEONS THIRD Wednesday of the Month Lunch is served at 12 noon followed by an informative presentation on a topic relevant to Seniors. To ensure sufficient food is prepared, please RSVP as early as possible, or have the office add your name to our list of regulars. DROP IN ACTIVITIES New players are always welcome, all activities are FREE for members and non members (except pickle ball). New Announcements regularly via , monthly calendars, our website and phone committee. RSVP promptly and pay before the deadline. If a trip is full, your name will be added to a waitlist and if a spot opens up, you will be contacted. If you have signed up and cannot attend, please advise ASAP. We strive to keep cost low while still providing opportunities for travelling. Medical related absences will be refunded, however; a credit or refund for change of mind absences will be issued based on our ability to fill your spot and meet costs for the outing.
