2 November is Rotary Foundation month Standing in for Sergeant Martin PP Greg Byers brought the meeting to order and invited President Ron to open our meeting. Ron welcomed our guests, PDG Philip Clancy, Roslyn Stewart, Gordon Hastie, all representing Australian Rotary Health and more specifically, the Mitchell Shire Suicide Prevention Network. Our Youth Exchange participant, Ben Charles was also welcomed along with his family members. Visitors, at our invitation, from local businesses were also present. Paulette Andrews provided our invocation while Ian Chadwick presented the loyal toast which included toasting the Rotary Club of Berlin, New Jersey, USA. The club has 87 members and meets every Monday at the Filomena Restaurant. Its key activity includes an Art Show and finding safe haven for the homeless. Ron acknowledged the success of yesterdays Anzac Tribute Show and specifically thanked IPP Ruth Byers for the work she had put in to making it work. It was also announced that our Christmas party get together on 18 December would take place at the Broadford bottom pub [more information to come] The meeting was handed to Chairman Fiona who called for reports : New Generations chair Jane Challis provided a brief overview of what RYLA is all about and advised that she will be attending the upcoming RYLA dinner with President Ron and our participant Mikaela Holman. Xenia Williamson will provide the transport home from the camp for Mikaela Service Projects chair IPP Ruth Byers reported : Our Shake the Can activity over the Melbourne Cup weekend raised $ An outstanding effort noting that this was out of town money. The Anzac Tribute Show was held yesterday and was well received by all. In all $3891 was raised which will go directly to Australian Rotary Health. The Ladies Day Out was a great day of fun and fellowship. In total $680 was raised. Membership chair PP President Mark Dossor acknowledged the significant contribution to our Club of PP Greg Byers on this the 10 th anniversary of his membership of our Club.
3 Family of Rotary chair Marlene Campbell spoke of the incredibly sad news of the passing of past member Robert Falkenbach over the weekend. Our condolences go to all who were close to Rob. Our Youth Exchange participant Ben Charles, pictured with Fiona McCarthy, used his presentation this evening to practice the introductory presentation he will use to introduce himself to his Swiss hosts next year. Presented entirely, in what will all felt was perfect German, Ben introduced himself via a power point presentation which included his family, interests, schooling and hopes during his exchange experience On behalf of Australian Rotary Health and the Rotary Health Muster tonight s presentation was provided by Southern Mitchell Rotarian Rosalyn Stewart, a member of Mitchell Shire Suicide Prevention Network. Rosalyn spoke specifically about Mental Health First Aid course which is a practical way for us to learn how to help each other. The course was developed 17 years ago with funds from Australia Rotary Health and has spread to over 20 countries. Over 400,ooo people in Australia have been trained with the overall vision of eradicating suicide via an educated and aware community. The course covers identifying a mental health issue and dealing with it until: Appropriate treatment and support are received, or Until the crisis resolves. The course does not diagnose a mental illness, nor treat it, just as a conventional first aid course will not teach you to be a doctor. Research suggests that up to 1 in 5 or 20% of the population will experience a diagnosable mental illness such as depression, anxiety or substance abuse and almost 1 in 2 people will experience a mental illness at
4 some time. With 65% of people with a diagnosable mental illness not seeking professional assistant our need to identify and react is incredibly important. The course covers: Developing mental health problems Depression Anxiety problems Psychosis Substance use problems Mental health crises Suicidal thoughts and behaviors Non suicidal self injury Panic attacks. The course is very interactive with many activities, films and discussions. Course length is 12 hours in varied formats, with a comprehensive manual. Once successfully completed participants are accredited for 3 years. Past District Governor Philip Clancy concluded the presentation by providing historic background to the course, its relevance and value For more information on the course contact Rosalyn at rosalyn.stewart4@bigpond.com IJ Halicki won the opportunity to spin for our $500 plus jackpot tonight walking away with a very special Seymour Podiatry Foot Massage - you bewdy! Harley Bird picked up the lucky number for a double pass to the Blue Lotus Water Gardens. Standing in for Sergeant Martin, PP Greg Byers got down to business by fining Catriona for leaving last week s Board Meeting early to attend her Book Club meeting over a bottle of red. Paulette put some coins in the bucket for her elevation to the national synchronized swimming team after Marlene was dropped. Name badges were not on show tonight with Ruth, Ian and Sharon being whacked. Tony Lee was got for not returning Greg s moccies and shaving jacket following yet another clandestine visit to the Byers residence. It seems Fred is related to everyone in Seymour and was therefore fined and Catriona crossfined Greg for his underwater swimming [with an ulterior motive!] at the aquatic centre. October 21 onwards Christmas raffle continues. 27 November Lunch on the River
