There are times when my sickle cell limits my abilities, but when I am at camp, it s like that fear is gone. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders.

When the disease is active, during what has become known as a crisis, patients become ill and can be hospitalized for days, weeks and sometimes even months.

3 MEET AYANNA... WHAT IS SICKLE CELL DISEASE? Ayanna is Camp Jumoke s Scholarship Award recipient and Child Ambassador. Ayanna has Sickle Cell Disease. me realize my abilities. Camp Jumoke presents me with opportunities to face new challenges, develop my independence an build my self-esteem. Things that I was strength to run and face my fears and master them. There are times when my sickle cell limits my abilities, but when I am at camp, it s like that fear is gone. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. In SCD, red blood cells become hard and sticky and look like a C-shaped farm tool called a sickle. When the disease is active, during what has become known as a crisis, patients become ill and can be hospitalized for days, weeks and sometimes even months. As a result, leading a normal life becomes challenging on many different levels. During a crisis, the sickled cells die early, which causes a constant shortage of red blood cells. Also, while travelling through small blood vessels, they get stuck and such as infections, stroke, acute chest syndrome and possibly even death. In 2010, we commemorated the 100th anniversary of the discovery of this terrible disease. Sadly, we are still searching for a cure

4 ABOUT CAMP JUMOKE Camp Jumoke s mission is to enrich the lives of children living with Sickle Cell Disease and its complications, one child at a time. Our primary mandate is to provide children with the opportunity to attend summer camp at our host camp, Camp Wenonah in beautiful Bracebridge, Ontario, for two weeks every summer; this is at little or no expense to their families. Camp Jumoke is a 100% volunteer-run organization. We receive no government funding. All our funds come from fundraising efforts and corporate donations. Currently, the cost to send each child to camp is approximately Attending summer camp is an experience that many of these children would likely not be able to afford were it not for the work we do at Camp Jumoke, thanks to the generous hearts of supporters just like you! While away at camp, these precious children take part in a camp experience that is medically supervised by volunteer doctors, nurses and other practitioners from Sick Kids and other Greater Toronto Area hospitals. Thanks to their support at camp, our campers participate in numerous outdoor activities, enhance their self-esteem, create invaluable support networks. 07

6 THE BEVERLY MASCOLL SCHOLARSHIP FUND As a volunteer-run, charitable organization Camp Jumoke relies on goal of enriching the lives of children with Sickle Cell Disease. Since Camp Jumoke s inception, one of our biggest supporters was the late Beverly Mascoll. Mrs. Mascoll was a well-known and respected philanthropist and businesswoman who strongly believed moral support to the organization. At Camp Jumoke s 10th Anniversary Gala in September 2004, two from Camp Jumoke in memory of Mrs. Mascoll. With the receipt in 2005 of a substantial donation from the Beverly Mascoll Foundation, it was our honour to formally launch the Beverly Mascoll Scholarship Fund. The Beverly Mascoll Scholarship, awarded annually, is a 1,500 award designed to help offset the cost of post-secondary tuition and/or books for the recipient. Along with the cash award, the recipient is then appointed as the Camp Jumoke poster child for the upcoming year and represents Camp Jumoke at various community events. Camp Assist is Camp Jumoke s pre-authorized, monthly giving program. It is a simple way to make regular contributions in support of our work to enrich the lives of children living with Sickle Cell Disease through the camp experience. THE 50/500 INITIATIVE We invite 50 community businesses to contribute 500 each to help us raise 25,000 to help in our efforts to change the lives of deserving children living with Sickle Cell Disease! INITIATIVE OBJECTIVES: Helping Camp Jumoke enhance the health and well being To motivate community involvement through charitable donations and volunteering, while raising awareness about Sickle Cell Disease. Bringing hope, joy and brighter tomorrows to children struggling bravely with the affects of Sickle Cell Disease. 13
