Adult Support & Protection Adult at Risk? If you are worried that you or someone you know is being harmed, it is important to tell someone. The person who is being harmed may not be able to report it themselves. Everyone has the right to be safe and free from harm. The Adult Support & Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 came in to force eight years ago and although many adults have benefited from its application, sadly there are still many adults living with harm. Harm takes many forms, from physical, emotional (bullying) and sexual, possibly being the most well-known, to self-neglect, financial and forced marriage being not so familiar. This list is by no means exhaustive, as there are many more. Harm can happen anywhere, to anyone and by anyone so it is important that we are all vigilant in our daily activities. If you are concerned about an adult, please contact North Ayrshire Health & Social Care Partnership or adultprotection@north-ayrshire.gcsx.gov.uk Further information can be found on the Council s website.

6 P A G E Carers Week 2016 was yet another success. We kicked the week off by organising various drop ins and afternoon tea events, thus raising awareness of the many unpaid Carers in our communities. We also had a great time learning the art of floral arranging, from Alyson s Flower Shop followed by lunch and relaxation techniques. The Herbour Dauner, followed by Tea and Scones in the Ship was another great event with sunny weather to boot. In the evening we hosted the Carers Centre version of Ascot, with a fun race night where the theme was to wear a fancy hat. Young Adult Carers enjoyed a pamper day and lunch. Carers Week finished off with a Carers Information Event at the Volunteers Room which was organised by North Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership. Day Out At Culzean Also in June, Carers enjoyed a beautiful sunny day down at Culzean Castle and Country Park. The tour of the castle was both interesting and highly entertaining. The guide was very informative, as she filled us in about the rich and colourful history of the castle dwellers and of the surrounding areas. As you can see from the photographs, we certainly made the most of the exceptional weather and of the stunning scenery.

7 P A G E 7 North Ayrshire Young Carers If you wish to find out more about the Young Carers Service, then please contact Deborah or Sheila Summer Activities All young carers were invited to take part in summer activities with their groups. Here s what they got up to... On The Upper Years Groups headed along to Soar at Braehead Arena where they took part in a game of Lazer Quest followed by lunch. After lunch the groups headed over to the crazy golf and completed both courses. Suffice to say, they all enjoyed a great day. The two primary groups joined forces and enjoyed a brilliant day out at Edinburgh Zoo. Most agreed that the highlight of the day was watching the Penguin Parade. Young Carers Festival The Young Adult Carers decided they would like to go along to the Clubhouse in Irvine, where they enjoyed a lovely meal and a group catch up. The 9th Annual Scottish Young Carers Festival took place in August and once again Young Carers from North Ayrshire were invited along. Our Young Carers who attended were from S1 and S2 group had an amazing time at the festival. Invited guests came along to take part in a political speed dating event where young carers were given the chance to discuss matters which effect them as young carers. One of the invited guests commented how impressive North Ayrshire Young Carers came across and how well they articulated the issues which affect them on a daily basis. North & South Young Adult Carers Recently as a return gesture of hospitality, our Young Adult group went down to South Ayrshire Carers Centre where they all enjoyed a delicious meal. Both North and South Ayrshire Young Adult Groups had a great evening and had lots to discuss. Both groups are keen to maintain this as a regular occurrence.

8 North Ayrshire Young Carers PAGE 8 Several of our S3/S4 Young Carers have recently returned from a respite break, where they enjoyed a brilliant weekend of Glamping. The Glamping Trip was only possible thanks to the magnificent success of Megan Sharp Young Carers Workers been working really hard over the summer period. This has been to ensure a smooth start to the Young Carers Groups following the summer holidays. We have also been busy planning and preparing for this year s Raising Awareness events. These events are delivered to every 1st Year registration class in North Ayrshire and Arran. As well as raising awareness of the many hidden Young Carers in our communities, Young Carers Workers can also identify those young people in education who may need some support. and a group of her school friends from St Matthew s Academy. The school friends took part in a Youth Philanthropy Initiative, and their success provided the funds necessary for the respite break going ahead. Karen Hughes has joined the team at the Carers Centre and she will be developing a Befriending Service for our Young Carers. This service will offer one to one support to Young Carers who would benefit from some extra support. We are currently recruiting volunteers to train as Befrienders. If you, or even someone you know meets the criteria listed below, then please contact Karen. Over the Summer, we met with many Young Carers who are new to the service. We also did our utmost to ensure we seen as many young people as we could over the summer period and pleased that many were able to join their relevant group at the start of the new term.
