Over one million Americans are living with Parkinson s disease. Seventeen thousand of them live in Colorado. Parkinson s is one of the most common neurological diseases; second only to Alzheimer s. Parkinson s is a progressive and debilitating disease that has significant social and financial effects. In 1981, the Parkinson Association of the Rockies began as a small collection of support groups and, while this is still a core program area for the Association, the Association has enriched the services to meet the needs and challenges the Parkinson s community faces each day. The Association provides critical programs and services which have a meaningful impacts on the quality of life for those affected by Parkinson s disease. 51 MONTHLY SUPPORT GROUPS The Parkinson Association of the Rockies is dedicated to enhancing lives and connecting communities in Colorado. The Parkinson Association of the Rockies is an independent non-profit not affiliated with a national organization and is member of AIRPO (Alliance of Independent Regional Parkinson Organizations). 3 PARKINSON ASSOCIATION OF THE ROCKIES 2019 OVERVIEW OF PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Ahead of the Curve This educational series is dedicated to providing topic-based opportunities from experts in the field for those living in the Denver Metro Area. Past topics have included: NonMotor Symptoms, Preparing for Doctor Appointments, Navigating Disability Benefits, Driving with Parkinson s, Medications, Cognitive Changes, Speech & Swallowing and Care Partner Tips. Approximately 18 events will be held in 2019, 10 of which will be webinars. Expect an attendance of per session. Chat with the Pro s These topic-based rural educational events are offered in the following areas: Durango (2 events), Steamboat Springs (2), Greeley (1), Grand Junction (2), Pueblo (2), Fort Collins/Loveland (2), Cheyenne, WY (2). Expected attendance of 50 participants per session. e3 Conference educate - energize - empower : Saturday, September 7 A full-day conference for the Parkinson s community and professionals that focuses on practical tips for living well with Parkinson s every day. Expected attendance of individuals. Exercise Classes PAR offers over 45 exercise classes a week such as, noncontact boxing, yoga, singing and voice classes, circuit training, dance, strength and balance classes and more. Expected attendance of 15 participants per class. Exercise Instructor Summit - Sunday, March 24 PAR exercise instructors will come together to discuss best practices, ideas, and network. Expected attendance of 50 individuals. Expected attendance of 20+ per session. Care Partner Workshops - TBD Care partners from around Colorado will come together and share their journeys, encourage one another and share experiences and tips. Expected attendance of individuals. Support Group Leader Summit - Saturday, March 16 PAR support group leaders will come together to share ideas, learn from one another and discuss ways to grow their group. Expected attendance of 35+ per session. Navigating Parkinson s 101 A three-part educational series offered to assist those recently diagnosed and their families in navigating the system and making important lifestyle changes which will help slow the progression of their Parkinson s. Parkinson Association of the Rockies will host the 17th Annual Vitality Walk on Sunday, June 2, Our goal is to have more than 1,500 individuals participate in promoting community awareness about Parkinson s while raising at least $250,000 to support the programs and services provided by the Parkinson Association. Participants are given the option to walk in Wash Park in Denver, Sandstone Ranch in Longmont and Colorado Springs. Can t attend? You can make it count with Choose to Snooze! This option allows you to register and raise pledges online, or provides you with an opportunity to host your own walk, brunch or party at home. Walk the Walk that Connects Communities and Enhances Lives Every step taken by someone with Parkinson s shows their determination to live well with this disease. Every step taken by friends, families, neighbors and co-workers supports those individuals and families who are affected by Parkinson s. Walking the walk is the way participants of the Vitality Walk share with others the tenacity they or someone they know with Parkinson s shows with every step taken. Since 2002, the annual pledge walk benefitting the Parkinson Association of the Rockies has raised significant funds and awareness for Parkinson s disease. In addition, the Vitality Walk serves as a community building event for individuals living with Parkinson s, as well as their families and friends who wish to learn more about the disease and available resources. Walk participants typically participate as teams. These teams are generally comprised of individuals with Parkinson s, their friends and families, as well as those who care about reducing the debilitating effects.
