Oprah Winfrey We have had a very successful first half of 2015 and we can look forward to the second half of the year with pride; our feet on the ground and ready for the final stretch! Our 7 th Annual Blooming for a Cause Charity Gala was tremendous, which made it possible to donate $19,000 to Providence Home and Hope Harbor Home so far this year. In May

2 we gave a $1000 scholarship to a very accomplished Senior, Hayley Watson, from North Brunswick High School. We have also donated to the GFWC-NC Endowment Fund, Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, West Brunswick High School Band and Band Scholarship Fund, GFWC-NC Women of Achievement and the Town of Holden Beach! We have touched many lives in our goal to achieve a better community and not just financially. Public Issues has been busy working on a lot of new and exciting projects for the community and veterans so we will hear about them when they host our September Meeting on the 15th. International will host our program in October and Home Life in November. On October 10 th we will have our District 7 meeting in Wilmington so mark your calendars. We have had some fun too this summer; the Bylaws and Data Storage committees have been in full swing! And the Holden Beach Concert Night was a great way to support the Town of Holden Beach as well as our Club. The Summer Social will be August 24 th. It will be a great way to end our summer break and enjoy each other s company. Please contact Donna if you wish to attend. She will need your salad and entrée choices as well. Please send your funds to Kris. It is $20.00 per person and you are welcome and encouraged to bring your spouse, a significant other, friend or perspective new member. Wear your best shoes! 3 MAY CLUB MEETING At our May meeting, Kathy Streng, Communities in Schools Resource Developer, spoke on the numerous programs sponsored by CIS in schools throughout Brunswick County. The club also presented its $1,000 Carey Page Truesdall Scholarship to Hayley Watson, who plans to attend UNC Charlotte to major in nursing. Pictured below are Brock, Ms. Watson, and Throckmorton.

4 During our May meeting, the Club was delighted to present to Hope Harbor Home and Providence Home a donation in the amount of $9,500 to each organization. The funds represent proceeds from our annual Blooming for a Cause Charity Gala, which was held in April.

5 COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM COMMITTEE REPORTS: Arts Community Service Program Maureen Wright, Chairman To start Fourth of July celebrations, Arts CSP invited everyone to join them at the Sea Notes Choral Society's patriotic concert, A Salute to America. Nineteen members and friends attended the rousing performance on June 27 or 28 at Odell Williamson Auditorium. The program was wonderful! We especially enjoyed the participation of our own Jean Newland and Helen Stead's husband. In September, Arts will meet to make early plans for next year's Arts Festival. We will begin contacting schools to promote interest and encourage entries in our festival. 8 CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS AND NEWS CLUB SOCIAL 8/24 SIGN UP DEADLINE 8/16 A NEW LOOK FOR OUR WEBSITE! Jean Newland, Web Manager Our homepage is now looking pretty spiffy with both a picture of our club and the GFWC Living the Volunteer Spirit logo prominently displayed. It is our face to the world, the first thing users will see when they come to our website, and I hope you like it. Well, you might ask, where did the UPCOMING EVENTS and NEWS and the current newsletter go? They used to be on the home page, but now you will find them under What s New on the left hand side. The rest of the site remains the same. Take a look and let me know what you think. Shine Centre, Cape Town, South Africa The club is supporting Shine Centre, a literacy program that offers assistance in 24 schools throughout three provinces in South Africa. Since its founding in 2000, the Centre has produced remarkable outcomes, enabling primary grade children to succeed, rather then struggle, in their education journey. In September I will visit the Centre and present the Club s donations, which include books, stickers, bookmarks, posters, pencils, and other supplies, as well as a cash contribution. Three new posters for the highly anticipated film were recently released featuring several of its stars: Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan, and Helena Bonham Carter. In addition to telling the story of these trailblazing leaders, many women have also been integral to the film's creation -- Sarah Gavron is the film's director, Abi Morgan its writer, and Alison Owen and Faye Ward its producers. 12 THE ADVENTURES OF HATTIE BELLE Hattie Belle has been around the world to foster International Awareness and Communication. She has been to Africa, Alaska, Arizona, Alabama, California, France, Italy, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. Can you pick out the different places? If you would like to take Hattie Belle on an adventure with you to help promote International Relation, please see anyone on the International CSP for a copy of Hattie. She loves to travel and meet new friends.
