1 THE Newsletter of the Lions Club of Johnsonville PO Box , Johnsonville Club Meeting Details Location: Masonic Hall, Phillip Street, Johnsonville Time: 6.00pm for 6:30 pm. Days: 1 st and 3 rd Monday President: Rob Mayo Secretary: Trish Gibson, phone Editor: Stephen Cook, phone February Clubs/202M/Zone-7/Johnsonville Editorial This has been a different month. Various activities happening, and I have been running late with this issue. Some expected articles have not arrived and the weather is absolutely c#$%^#p! So what better to do than sit inside and finish off a brief issue. Some interesting discussions lately at Club and at Board about projects. A lot of effort gone into encouraging members to support the Club by agreeing to stand for office. We must remember that without our Club Board, the committee chairs, president, secretary, treasurer and so forth we could not be a viable organisation. I know that we all get value from our membership, we should therefore be willing to put our hand up to assist the Club and provide the opportunity for current and future members to participate in their local Lions Club. As I write the weather does not bode well for the kite day, but I can look back on an enjoyable last weekend. I took part in a motorcycle event down south riding to Christchurch on Friday, experiencing lightning, thunder, torrential rain but no earthquakes. Then Saturday and Sunday I travelled 2,200 kilometres in mainly fine weather around the top half of the South Island, returning to Wellington on Monday. All in all very enjoyable, but tiring. I managed to go to the Hermitage at Mt Cook, -never been there before and also over to Pupu Springs past Takaka. I even stopped outside the Waihopai spy base in Marlborough, somewhere else I had not been. The domes are much larger than I expected. The trip showed to me just how much great scenery we have, even though I mainly saw a winding ribbon of black and grey tar seal unfolding before me! Looking forward to the rest of the Lions year we have several events coming up remember to promote them among your friends and work colleagues. Ed. Stephen RED and SPARKLING Hastings Convention LIONS DISTRICT 202M March 2012 Lillian and Brian, and Rosemary and Stephen are already booked. As is President Rob. Why not join us for an entertaining and convivial weekend away. Secretary Trish has already sent out a registration form please consider using it. Contact her if you want another. This is an opportunity to meet with and discuss ideas with a wide range of Lions, including international guests. Clearly there will also be time to sample local vineyard production also. 2 Programmes Committee National Film Archives showing the afternoon or evening for this has been rescheduled to a later date. Do you know of a now-famous person who was at a school in the Northern suburbs years ago whom the Archives could search for this could be a highlight of the showing. Guess Who s Coming to Dinner this is scheduled for Saturday 26 May Guest Speakers: 5 March Karen Fifield, CEO, Wellington Zoo 19 March Trevor Morley, Private Investigator tbc 2 April Judge David Carruthers, Chairman of the NZ Parole Board Dances The first of the Club s dances will be on Saturday 10 March (we have already sold six tickets). This year s charity for the dances will be the Malaghan Institute for Medical Research. We are very fortunate that Razzle Dazzle dance band who will be playing for all four of our dances this year, again has a web page for our dances included in their Gig Guide. Marlene STOCKTAKE BUNNINGS, Tory St Saturday 31 March A reminder please. Contact Stephen C to help with this. Please remember that each hands on work that we do for payment raises funds for our Administrative account. All the monies earned in this way help to offset the running costs of the Club, and therefore reduce our dues. The effort we put in goes to assist all Club members by covering some of our costs. This is different to project or Trust funds that come from the public all these funds (quiz nights, BBQs etc.) are public funds and all those monies are returned to the public through our projects and donations. So, please help at these stocktakes etc, it helps all JOHNSONVILLE SCHOOL Supported needed. Recently our Club wrote to local schools suggesting that we could assist with projects, and seeking input as to what was possible or needed. Johnsonville school is very appreciative of our offer., and recognises the work we do in the community. The school has various tasks it would like assistance with. Please consider these and think; Are there projects my committee could pick up? Is there something I would like the Club as a whole to achieve Is there something there I could do as a community minded individual. After all, we are Lions because we want to help our community, our Club has offered and had a response, now is the time for us to act. Opportunities available can be summarised as follows; Hands on gardening, tidying, water blasting, pruning, fence building, painting etc. Several tasks the school wishes to fast track. Individually, assisting with Friday sausage sizzles, or with Parent Reading tutoring programme. 90 minutes one day a week. Ralph has done this for several years. School gala assistance, helping with the committee or on the day. There are also requests to assist with funding for student costs for educational trips, school camps etc. Please consider this seriously, maybe we can organise a Club working bee one weekend to clean up gardens etc. Please discuss in your committees and agree what we should do. Hands on projects help our community, give us a sense of satisfaction, help us know our fellow Lions better, and are usually enjoyable. Lions Club of Johnsonville February 2012 Page 2
3 Le er on the left received from Life Flight Trust to acknowledge a recent donation by the Club The Plunket Society will be holding their Annual Street Appeal on Saturday 11th March, and are desperate for collectors in the Johnsonville/Churton Park area. This will be a Door to Door Collection. If any club members are able to assist, can you please contact Sandra Yeldin directly on Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. Lions Club of Johnsonville February 2012 Page 3

These are not paid positions but your travel expenses will be reimbursed and you will also receive an honorarium of $320 per year.
